Black Tide’s Zakk Sandler:"I think there will be songs in the next album that will have real meaning behind them."
March 31, 2009 by Scott
Pamela Parosky from MetalUnderground.com recently interviewed Zakk Sandler from http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=43561. Zakk seems to be the most open personality in the band. I’ve seen them twice as support acts and he’s the one that gets the crowd going and the one that sticks around afterwards to talk to fans.
In the interview he talked about the writing process for the next album, in brief.
Our last record doesn’t really transcend anything and doesn’t put out any message of any sort and, even within every song, most of them are pretty open to interpretation. I think there will be songs in [the next album] that will have real meaning behind them.
I think that’s what a lot people didn’t like about Light From Above. The music was cool and thrashy but the lyrics lacked a bit. I thought it was pretty good when it first came out, but I can’t remember the last time I listened to it. The guitars are good, Gabriel’s voice is good, but the lyrics are the bands shortcoming. There isn’t good substance. The album still sold well for a debut album, seeing that the label pushed the shit out of these guys. I’m sure the next album will be a more mature sounding record and better than the last.

I think they re pretty good…
I don’t know what everyone is talking about, the lyrics are my favorite part of Black Tide songs,(don’t get me wrong, I love the music just as much) “Light from Above” is my favorite song on there and for me at least, this song describes the final battle of good vs. evil at Armageddon and afterwards all pain and suffering ends after “the light shows” in the sky, and that light is God delivering believers from the chaos. “Enterprise” describes the what everyone knows as the “anti-christ” coming to power, creating lies and destroying humanity. “Black Abyss” describes what everyone knows as hell. “Show me the Way” most likely is referring to people who attempt to bring you to believe in God $ Creation. I can agree that the rest of the songs don’t have as much meaning, but they still describe themselves(the band members) and possible real-life situations, depending on the song. And if the album art doesn’t depict Armageddon, then I have no idea what it could possibly be. I simply do not agree that these lyrics “have no meaning behind them.” If these lyrics were not intended to mean what I have come to understand these songs as, then that is one strange coincidence; just listen to those two songs(”Light from Above” $ “Enterprise”) and try to tell yourself they don’t describe these things; even if you personally do not believe in God or Armageddon, these songs describe these event. I have no idea if Black Tide as a band believes in God, but if they do not, then it is very strange that they would create songs depicting these events at random. These are just my thoughts though, I have no idea what the band members really think.
