British Invasion: Black Sabbath
I figured I’d start the British Invasion week out with the band most call the pioneers of Heavy Metal. Honestly, what can I say about Black Sabbath that hasn’t already been said.
Black Sabbath originated out of Birmingham England in 1968 as a blues and rock band under the names Polka Tulk Blues Company and Earth. Later changing their name to Black Sabbath after Tony Iommi wrote a song called the aforementioned name when confused with another local band called Earth.
This is where I’m going to stop this history…because if you don’t know the history of the band then you either are new to heavy metal or you don’t watch enough TV. Google Black Sabbath
Fast Forward::: Ozzy and Sabbath reunite and do shows at ozzfest. Later, Dio hooks back up with Iommi, Butler and Drummer Vinny Appice to tour as Heaven and Hell with a great success. Black Sabbath The Dio Years is released and also has had great success.
Rumors have floated around for years about a new record being recorded with all original members but has and probably will never happen. Honestly I hope it doesn’t because how can you bring something back from 40 years ago and expect it to still have the impact that it had back then. It won’t be the same and frankly I think it will be a huge disappointment for fans new and old. Lets leave well enough alone. All Hail Black Sabbath!

Yup. Gotta love the Sabbath fellas. Gotta say, I’m partial to the pre-Dio stuff, but I enjoy it all.

I can’t agree more. One of my favorite shows was the reunion show, a few years ago. Seeing Electric Funeral live was… a religious experience. But seriously, songs like National Acrobat, Megalomania (find them people!) as well as classic Sabbath just can’t be replicated. Funny thing is, I never heard much Dio Sabbath until recently (I’m 34) and I was BLOWN AWAY. Specifically Mob Rules and the song “Sign of the Southern Cross”. I’ve always been a fan of Ronnie, the guy has some pipes, if not the best in the biz. (Dickenson, Halford). But a new album? Sabbath would REALLY have to move into a castle, with a LOT of smoke, and really get medieval and metal to really put anything out worthwhile. Let’s just enjoy the last 20+ records and not worry about breaking new ground. They still own the old ground, after all….

Great points Liverneck. I’m starting to get curious about this Dio era. Honestly I never got into it. I’m 32 and I just never wanted to venture into that relam of Sabbath but now that you mention it I may just go pic up The Dio years sometime soon.
