You might think that servicing the needs of GWAR in this, the midst of their 25^th Anniversary Tour would be a full-time job. And it is! But for the artists of Slave Pit Inc., the production company that created and maintains GWAR lust for all things rubber, a constant slew of side-projects is business as usual. This holiday season sees the artists behind the most notorious band in metal history involved in a bevy of extra-curricular delights.

Besides portraying GWAR’s bellicose lead singer Oderus Urungus, Dave Brockie is a painter, writer and avid snowboarder…and has just released his own signature snowboard! When old buddy, huge GWAR fan, and ex-pro rider Ron Bureta got his own company going, the long-held idea of a Brockie snowboard finally became a reality.

Says Bureta, “Since “HELL-O!” I have been a huge GWAR fan, scaring the jocks in high school by singing lyrics from “Slutman City” out loud. During my Pro Snowboarder days, I always wanted to do a GWAR graphic but my sponsors thought that it wouldn’t be cool. Now that I own my own company I’m doing things my way. Teaming up with Dave Brockie for this project is a dream come true for me and is the next best thing to becoming a GWAR Slave.”

MATT MCGUIRE’S “FRIENDS” THINK “BLOOD IS YUMMY”.

Slave-Pit artist Matt Maguire is one of the main figures on the Slave-Pit shop floor and GWAR’s live show. This talented artist, who plays GWAR’s mixed up Scumdog cohort Sawborg-Destructo, also builds lots of the props and costumes for used by GWAR, also designs many of the shirts and other graphic elements of GWAR’s assault on humanity, and also serves as GWAR’s stage manager. Yet somehow he finds time to produce all kinds of collectible art. He does custom drawings, paintings, and tattoo designs, and creates limited runs of a host of bizarre creatures, including the “Blood is Yummy”, and “Friends” figures. Matt and Bob Gorman collaborate on the slave-trade.net site, and he can be reached through mattmaguire.com or at slavetrade.net for graphics, tattoos, and costumes one of a kind art, and fabrication work. “American Carnage” will kick off on January 18 in Seattle, WA for a 26-date trek across North America that will include the six Canadian dates postponed earlier this month. Tickets for most shows go on sale this Friday, November 20. Ticketmaster is offering a special presale for most shows from Wednesday November 18 at 10am until Thursday November 19 at 10pm.

“American Carnage” is the first time that Slayer and Megadeth will have toured the U.S. together since 1991’s epic “Clash of the Titans” tour. To celebrate that and in recognition of the tough economic times that many of their fans are having, Megadeth and Slayer have decided to roll back the price of a chunk of tickets at every U.S. show to the “1991 price” of $10.00. These specially-priced tickets will be limited and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Megadeth has also teamed with iloveallaccess.com to provide an Ultimate Fan Package including premium seats, meet and greets, pre-show parties and more.

In addition, Testament – who was also on the “Clash of the Titans” bill, will be Special Guests on the entire tour, marking the first time that all three bands have shared a stage together in more than 18 years, and making this a “must see” metal event.

Both Megadeth and Slayer will hit the road supporting new albums: Megadeth’s 2009 album, ENDGAME, while Slayer’s World Painted Blood, the band’s 10th studio venture, hit stores November 3. Testament’s The Formation of Damnation: Special Tour Edition, will be released on February 23, 2010, with special unreleased bonus tracks.

Slayer and Megadeth have already massacred territories together outside of the U.S. – first with four explosive dates in June, 2009 across Western Canada – “Canadian Carnage” – marking the first time the bands had shared a stage anywhere in 18 years; and then six co-headlining “Carnage” dates in Australia followed in October.

According to various Canadian press outlets last summer:

“It was a night of thrash impossible to trash…” “Tales about war, death, destruction, Satan, aliens and serial killers have never been so much fun…” “The two heavy metal heavyweights …went head-to-head on a level playing field. Both bands brought their ‘A’ game. And the results were anything but pretty – unless you include pretty freakin’ loud and pretty freakin’ awesome.”

Slayer. Few bands come close to matching the intensity that Slayer – guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, vocalist/bassist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo – brings to its live shows, having been named “Best Live Band” by numerous media outlets including Revolver, SPIN, and Metal Hammer. World Painted Blood offers a Slayer-ized point of view of our world – God’s terrifying global genocide, the chaos of our broken political system, the way-too-close proximity of world horrors that technology has brought us, and a chilling hypothesis of how the rest of the world might view America. The album was recorded in Los Angeles over two time periods, during October 2008 and then between late January and March 2009. World Painted Blood was produced by Greg Fidelman, who’s spent time in the studio with Metallica, the Gossip, the (International) Noise Conspiracy, Slipknot and others, and executive produced by long-time Slayer colleague, Rick Rubin, who suggested Fidelman for the project. One reviewer called the album “the heaviest, bloodiest and best album in almost two decades.” Fans got a couple of early morsels of the brutal new Slayer material — “Psychopathy Red,” a Hanneman song inspired by the heinous Russian serial killer Andrei Chikatilo, who confessed to savagely murdering 56 children, was recorded last October and then leaked online. Then, the King-penned track, “Hate Worldwide,” was made available in July as a limited-edition single through Hot Topic. For “American Carnage,” Slayer’s Tom Araya promises, “no ballads, no acoustic numbers, no slow tempos.”

Megadeth. 2009 saw the release of ENDGAME, what has been heralded as Megadeth’s best album in years. It’s the record where it all comes full circle in a career that has not only set standards in hard rock and metal, but defined them. Megadeth’s signature shredding and rousing lyrics are the hallmarks of ENDGAME, with vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine once musing and making declarations about the world we live in, having named the album after a government document that should strike fear in the hearts of Americans! But that’s Mustaine and Megadeth, using the vehicle of music to shake things up, to make a point and to rattle your brain, literally, figuratively and sonically. Revolver magazine said of ENDGAME, “One of their best albums.” VH1’s That Metal Show deemed it, “One of the metal albums of the year”, and Popmatters said, “the record positively scorches with an intensity not heard since Rust in Peace.”

Legendary thrash metal titans Testament, whose latest award-winning release (2008 Album of the Year, Metal Hammer’s Golden God Award) The Formation of Damnation, displays them as the quintessential modern heavy metal band, whose experience and accumulated skill allows them to attack with reserves of anger, energy and finesse that make them more powerful than ever. Lead singer Chuck Billy says,

“Uniting these bands is the heavy metal event of generations. We are so proud to be a part of it.”

The album features the single “Again” and was produced by Howard Benson (Voivod, Pretty Boy Floyd). On working with the band Benson said,

“For me, I like bands that have something they believe in, regardless of what it is, and the fact that they believe in something so strongly is fairly attractive to me”.

Guitarist Sameer beams about Memento Mori saying,

“We’ve grown a lot as musicians and songwriters…we’ve done a lot of growing up in the last few years, and I think a lot of that comes out in our songs and lyrics. A lot of real life experiences, honesty, and hope”.

Rhythm guitarist/backup vocalist Jared Hartmann was kind enough to answer a few questions for MetalMartyr.com about the band, the new album and performing for the troops in Afghanistan. Check it out below!

Metal Martyr: Hi, Jared! Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions. First, could you introduce yourself and the band? What does each member uniquely contribute to Flyleaf?

Jared: Flyleaf consists of Lacey, Pat, James, Sameer and myself(Jared) everyone contributes to the songwriting in their own unique way.  For me I mostly just write guitar parts and I also do the bands Twitter.  Lacey, Sameer and Pat are the main songwriters they come to the band with ideas, melodies, and full songs which we all contribute too. James is the backbone of all the songs and he can fix anything.

Metal Martyr: The band hosted several listening parties for the new album a couple months ago… how did those go?

Jared: The listening parties were alot of fun and we got to interact with the fans like we did when we were in a van.  The venues were all pretty small so we got to talk to most of the people that came which is hard to do when we play at bigger shows.

Metal Martyr: Do you have any cool stories from the road that you’d like to share?

Jared: We were playing in San Antonio a couple years ago and it was a sold out show.  The opening bands has all played and there had been thunderstorms off and on all day.  Well we had our guitars on and were walking to the stage when a lighting bolt hit right outside the venue.  I think I had just stepped on stage and all the power went out so the crowd booed and waited.  After 30 min the power wasn’t coming back so we took a couple acoustic guitars and Lacey sang acapella.  It was really cool because the crowd sang so loud we couldn’t hear what we were playing.

Metal Martyr: There has been some debate over whether to call Flyleaf a Christian band, how important is your faith in regards to your music?

Jared: Everyone in Flyleaf is a Christian and we can’t separate our faith from our lives so of course its going to come out in the music in some way.

Metal Martyr: Being a former U.S. soldier myself, I’d like to personally thank you for performing in Afghanistan for the troops over there. How was that experience?

Jared: Performing for the troops in Afghanistan was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.  We were there for 2 weeks and got a little taste of how much they sacrifice for us so it made really proud and grateful for everyone in the military. Also they let us shoot alot cool guns including the second biggest one the army has the howitzer 777.

Metal Martyr: How is Memento Mori different from your self titled album?

Jared: I think the biggest difference between Momento Mori and the self titled album is that besides maturing alot I think its alot more personal.  Not only in the song content but in the art as well which Pat created for us.

Metal Martyr: What can we expect to see from Flyleaf in the future?

Jared: You can expect us to be touring alot next year and we will be traveling overseas as well.

Metal Martyr: Any last words for your current and soon-to-be fans?

Jared: I would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and we appreciate all your encouragement and hope to see you at a show soon.

SKELETONWITCH released “Breathing the Fire” via PROSTHETIC RECORDS on October 13. It debuted at number 151 on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and number 2 on the magazine’s “Heatseekers’ Chart.”

“Pat is an amazing artist. We’ve kinda assigned him to doing all the artwork on the record, videos, and for photo shoots.” He later exclaims, “The whole texture of woodcutting and the way it looks, it has a really beautiful feel to it.”

In the 4th webisode the band talks about the photo shoots for Memento Mori, as well as the album packaging (the scenery for which was also created by bassist Pat Seals). Vocalist Lacey describes the meaning behind the scenery:

“The scene comes out of a story about a King who won a battle and came home victorious, where a slave (me), traveled behind him saying, ‘Memento Mori’ (remember mortality).”

Later on in the clip Pat talks about brainstorming ideas for music videos.

“Sameer has actually been taking the reigns on brainstorming ideas with different directors we have….it kind of freed up some of the weight off the location and the theme of the video. It allowed for some of the creative aspects to come through us.”

Memento Mori arrives in-stores everywhere on 11/10.
