You might think that servicing the needs of GWAR in this, the midst of their 25^th Anniversary Tour would be a full-time job. And it is! But for the artists of Slave Pit Inc., the production company that created and maintains GWAR lust for all things rubber, a constant slew of side-projects is business as usual. This holiday season sees the artists behind the most notorious band in metal history involved in a bevy of extra-curricular delights.

Besides portraying GWAR’s bellicose lead singer Oderus Urungus, Dave Brockie is a painter, writer and avid snowboarder…and has just released his own signature snowboard! When old buddy, huge GWAR fan, and ex-pro rider Ron Bureta got his own company going, the long-held idea of a Brockie snowboard finally became a reality.

Says Bureta, “Since “HELL-O!” I have been a huge GWAR fan, scaring the jocks in high school by singing lyrics from “Slutman City” out loud. During my Pro Snowboarder days, I always wanted to do a GWAR graphic but my sponsors thought that it wouldn’t be cool. Now that I own my own company I’m doing things my way. Teaming up with Dave Brockie for this project is a dream come true for me and is the next best thing to becoming a GWAR Slave.”

GORMAN’S TROLLS AS FEATURED IN SPIN MAGAZINE

Bob Gorman is one of GWAR’s lead slaves and portrays GWAR’s hapless killing creates t-shirt designs and logos, custom illustration, and paintings. He also designs and fabricates custom props and costumes for GWAR and other clients and manufactures and sells concrete “Garden Trolls”, as featured in the Nov. 2009 issue of Spin magazine. MATT MCGUIRE’S “FRIENDS” THINK “BLOOD IS YUMMY”.

Slave-Pit artist Matt Maguire is one of the main figures on the Slave-Pit shop floor and GWAR’s live show. This talented artist, who plays GWAR’s mixed up Scumdog cohort Sawborg-Destructo, also builds lots of the props and costumes for used by GWAR, also designs many of the shirts and other graphic elements of GWAR’s assault on humanity, and also serves as GWAR’s stage manager. Yet somehow he finds time to produce all kinds of collectible art. He does custom drawings, paintings, and tattoo designs, and creates limited runs of a host of bizarre creatures, including the “Blood is Yummy”, and “Friends” figures. Matt and Bob Gorman collaborate on the slave-trade.net site, and he can be reached through mattmaguire.com or at slavetrade.net for graphics, tattoos, and costumes one of a kind art, and fabrication work. He has a line of t- shirts, stickers and limited runs of latex “friends”, figures .and small blood is yummy guys coming soon on  slavetrade.net. Bob Gorman and I will also have limited prints soon.

In other GWAR news the Scumdogs have unleashed upon the unwitting populace of North America a special collection of classics from the GWARchives. Justin Longshore, the band’s guitarist had this to say:

“The recording process for Skepsis has been going really well. We really focused on writing a record that will satisfy fans of our previous two records along with pushing new boundaries. Danny is currently finishing up vocal tracking and we couldn’t be any more satisfied with the way things are sounding. I’m really stoked for everyone to hear these new songs.”

The cover of the album was done by artist Paul Romano, who has also done covers for The Acacia Strain, Mastodon and The Red Chord, among many others.

Longshore commented,

“We had Paul Romano do the artwork once again and it is easily one of my favorite pieces he has done. It really captures the concept and music that is behind the album. We wanted the art to really project and not look like every other metal album that you see at your local record shop. We’ll be leaving for tour with Despised Icon in a week so make sure you come out and see an awesome tour! “

Formed in 1994 by Steev Esquivel (vocals, bass), former guitarist Mike Roberts and drummer Paul Hopkins, Skinlab took the San Francisco, CA Bay Area music scene by storm. Machine Head’s Robb Flynn took notice of the band, and helped them to secure their first record deal (Bound Gagged and Blindfolded) and sold out European tour.

After guitarist Mike Roberts left the band in 1998, Skinlab recruited guitarists Scott Sargeant (Killing Culture) and Steve “Snake” Green (Skrew) and unleashed their limited edition EP Eyesore soon after. In 1999 the band recorded Disembody: The New Flesh. A year and a half of touring came next, with Skinlab sharing the stage with the likes of Exodus, S.O.D, Fear Factory, the Deftones, Coal Chamber, Deicide, Entombed, and Napalm Death.

In 2003, Scott Sargeant left the band, and guitarist Glen Telford joined the lineup. With Telford onboard, the band recorded The Revolting Room. Their next touring cycle saw the band share the stage with such acts as Hatebreed, Superjoint Ritual, Arch Enemy, Soil, and In Flames.

After a four year break, Skinlab hit the road with the “The Face of Aggression” tour. This tour saw the band bring back it’s furious stage presence and ‘in for the kill attitude’, culminating with a June 3rd 2007 performance at The Oakland Metro. This intense performance was captured for a future DVD and live album release titled Skinned Alive.

Skinlab’s newest album, The Scars Between Us, will hit the streets on 9/15/09.
