CD Review: Hail!Hornet
November 20, 2007 by Scott
Hail!Hornet are a newer band, but the members are not new to the game. Featuring members of Alabama Thunderpussy, Weedeater, Sourvien and Beaten Back To Pure. Hailing from the south, Hail!Hornet are a four piece band raining down sludge metal at its best…kind of. As if we needed another genre, they have self proclaimed their sound Grime-Metal. This about explains everything. Nothing clean cut about this recording. Everything is raw and in your face. Simple riff and simple beats. Don’t get me wrong, simple is good.
I enjoy every song on this cd…well right up until the point where Troy Medlin starts singing, if that’s what you want to call it. Troy has his own style that I don’t care for. I’m not saying the band needs a new singer. I’m just saying that my only complaint. I would make some adjustments on the next record or perhaps it will grow on me. If you want my honest opinion it sounds as if someone is taking a power drill to his knee caps and he’s painfully pleading to be put out of his misery. The crazy thing is that I can’t stop listening!
Update 3/5/2009: I normally wouldn’t go back and change a review or make any adjustments to anything this old, but it was brought to my attention that this review sucks and I can honestly agree with that. The fact is that during the time of this review, I really didn’t like the singing on this CD. There were quite a few bands that I didn’t quite like the singing on during this time. My taste in some bands have changed since then but this one didn’t take me very long at all. As that last line in the review above says, I couldn’t stop listening and Troy’s howling vocals really did grow on me fast. I would love to hear another album by this collaboration.

Just an update on an old review. This was one of my first reviews for Dwell Records. I listened to the cd rather quickly and did this review the same night. Since then I have learned to take CD’s that I have never heard before and take them on the road with me to work and get a good listen and feel for the band before I make a quick review. Sometimes it takes a few times to get used to a certain entity a band has. I jumped on Troy’s vocals because at the time it was so raw and different to me I wasn’t completely ready for it. Since this review they have grown on me and I love this CD. The entire sludge metal genre takes some getting used to and I’m really diggin it.
this band is amazing
your review sucks about as bad as your grammar and spelling
your review sucks almost as bad as your grammar and your speeling
Ha ha! Jesus Christ. Who are you to talk about spelling and grammar, dude? Your punctuation and “speeling” sucks, how about that? My spelling and grammar has come a long way since I wrote this. Looking back at some of the other old stuff I wrote, I wonder how the hell I ever graduated high school.
This is an old review and I actually really dig this album. I almost blow my speakers every time I play this in my car. I wish I could scream like Troy Medlin.
But yes, this review sucks and even I can admit that. Next time proof read your own shit before hitting submit.
Twice.
