well now, you can check out the album before you throw down your 20 bucks or whatever. and the speed reviews are out now too with the web. before a record would be shit but take 2 or 3 weeks for everyone to find out and in that time the company would have made it's money. now people know within a few hours of release, or a few days prior, if the record is absolute shite.

@Giles - I agree about the used CDs.

I always get the CD of the music I'm really into but that's not where the artists make the money, the real deal comes from the shows, everybody knows that.

What I like about the situation nowadays is the added value you get with most new releases. Years ago we were happy with a 4 page booklet and a CD. Now it's not uncommon to get a big booklet with tons of info and a bonus DVD. Not to mention all the special packs, bundles and cheap pre-orders. All in all, it makes my buying experience a lot more interesting and I'm willing to shell out the cash for "the good stuff" :)

"also I dont see how buying used cds is any better than dling music because (correct me if i am wrong) the music industry gets nothing out of those sales."

Good point. I wonder about that myself. But I have to ask, if you were not going to buy it in the first place, why would you download it in the first place?

i also disagree with what he said. i like alot of peoples music better than theirs. the only reason they sell more is because the time it came out and the "angst" they portrey. anyways my stance on downloading music is it is not going to hurt the music industry if i wasnt going to buy the music in the first place, and if i download somthing and like it, I will buy the next stuff they come out with . also I dont see how buying used cds is any better than dling music because (correct me if i am wrong) the music industry gets nothing out of those sales.

"I had to buy a CD just to cry over the spent money a few hours later…"

Hell, I still do that every now and then, but a lot less than the "Old days". That shit used to piss me off because I would be searching through some cds and have something I knew I liked in hand and find something that looked cool and I thought would be...just to find out later that it was garbage. And there we are left pissed off with a peice of garbage in hand when we could have had what we really wanted.

I actually think that there's more shitty bands per good band, perhaps 10:1 but that was the case 10-15 years ago as well. The only difference was a lack of Internet presence and mainly MySpace so you didn't know about all the bands.

What makes today's situation good for the fans is the ability to quickly find what they like and discard what they don't like. In the "old days" I had to buy a CD just to cry over the spent money a few hours later...
