Death Metal…WTF?
When I was younger I used to love Death Metal. Bands like Deicide, Morbid Angel, Grave, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Obituary and Malevolent Creation were on a regular rotation in my cd player. A lot of things I used to hate about some Death Metal back then was the fact that the music was often overpowering the vocals. Not that you could understand half the shit they were saying unless you read and memorized the lyrics from the sleeve. These days a lot of Death Metal bands have the opposite problem. The vocals overpower the music and you can’t hear the guitars.
People seem to love Job For A Cowboy but I can’t get past the vocals. That’s all I hear. While I think Johnny Davy has a really cool low toned bad-ass growl, I can’t hear anything going on. This is what I loved about Cannibal Corpse. The blast-beat of the drums and the fast crunchy guitar work. But with a lot of bands like Job For A Cowboy and Gojira (another great band) the vocals are overpowering everything else. I don’t know, maybe I’m just getting too picky these days, but it just doesn’t seem to be what it used to.

The weakest link in the death metal chain, IMO, is the vocals, in fact, I tune them out most of the time to focus on the tight musicianship of the band. So i guess i’ll be pretty dissappointed when I see Job For A Cowboy at the Gigantour - o well Children Of Bodom, In Flames and Megadeth will make up for it.

How about those death metal loogos??? I love alot of Death metal, but I always have to laugh to myself when I stare at a band logo for 10 minutes before i finally decipher it. Luckily the best bands ( Morbid Angel, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse ) have not fallen into this trap. But flip through an issue of Metal Maniacs and I defy anyone to read the bulk of these band names without searching through the article for it.
And speaking of death metal, Carcass will be touring Europe. Please all Americans, join me in prayer in hopes that they will grace out shores ( at least upstate NY!!)

it’s ridiculous. Have you checked out the one at metalsucks.net. They have an unreadable band logo of the week contest. I don’t know where some of the bands get their ideas from or how they decipher them.

I agree scott. I went to metalsucks.net. who the f%$#. is it??? The normal person on the street would look at that and turn away!!!

Yeah, dale. The one they have up there now would make a good tribal tattoo but I can’t see a damn letter in it.
