Dream Theater: A Rite Of Passage Video
May 8, 2009 by Scott
Here is the new video from prog-metal pioneers, or whatever you want to call them these days, Dream Theater. The new video, A Rite Of Passage, comes off of their upcoming album Black Clouds & Silver Linings, set for a June 23rd release date on Roadrunner.

Decent song. They’re far from their old masterpieces (Scenes from a Memory and Awake). I dunno if I’ll buy it… I guess I’ll listen to the whole album before deciding.
Oh, and BTW, it’s “Rite of Passage”. Rite as in “A ceremonial initiation or event”.
Thanks. Was in a hurry….and I’m a bit illiterate sometimes.
I THOUGHT IT WAS FUCKING AMAZING! both of the songs are absolutely fantastic, can’t wait to see then in atl!!!!!!!!
I came.
I completely agree with Takar. Very disappointing. They indeed are far from their masterpieces. Very sad that this much awaited album might not satisfy all DT fans. SDOIT split DT’s fans into two and likewise this might also do the same. They are still Prog Metal gods and why do they need to do a radio friendly number. Don’t get it. They do respect all their fans and this song is a big big disappointment for me who hold them in a very high regard. Except for the chorus wherein a bit of guitars is thrown in…… I don’t wanna take a swipe at JP. Am disappointed and sad.
I don’t know about you guys but i found this very disappointing. It just seems like to me that they’ve gotten very lazy with their instruments and uncreative with their song writing. Either that or they’re trying really hard to get into mainstream singles charts for the sake of earning money.
I really want to know why they are getting in to this free masion bullshit. they will lose alot of fans by going this route.
awesome video
ohhh a great amazing
how i believe it
my god
“”"A Rite of Passage”"”
a heaven video
First off, I think DT are out of this world. I realise how some diehard DT fans might find this song to be slightly mainstream as there are recognisable patterns in it (eg verse, chorus, solo, chorus) and an instantly appealing chorus. However, personally i think this song is great. It has every bit of the DT touch in it and the exceptional professionalism one has come to expect of them. Besides that, having a slightly mainstream song in their album is not necessarily a bad thing as it goes to show how diverse DT can be, but more importantly it’s vital for their ever-growing fanbase who need to be seduced by a track on the first listening as opposed to their already existing fans who are prepared to listen to their songs a few times in order to appreciate them. I’m positive that the new album will mainly consist of very progressive songs with complicated and atypical patterns, but by including this song in their tracklist DT will have, in my opinion, improved on the album as a whole (just like Pull Me Under in Images And Words). Can’t wait for it to be released…!
I tend to disagree with the comments of Nick, regarding the new track released by DT.
It is not “slightly mainstream as there are recognisable patterns in it (eg verse, chorus, solo, chorus)”. The track follows a pattern which has lead to the creation of some of the greatest metal anthems, and of course I am referring to to historic bands such as Metallica. DT have at last “seen the light” and have started to make some good music.
Of course they will never be as good as Metallica, but at least they are trying..!
Cheerio!
I dont know who AEL RULES is, but ‘Metallica’ and ‘Anthem’ are incongruous. Putting both words in a common sentence is a sign of profound distatefulness. Metallica have not written an anthem since…1990 – yes, it’s been 19 years. They better bow their heads to the new master and humbly withdraw to a silent corner. It’s a rite of passage, from their glories of old to the obscurity they now deserve.
To Nick: This is probably the ‘radio hit’ of the album. Let’s not forget these guys need to make a living. After all, systematic chaos had 2 such ‘radio hits’ (cf PoW and Forsaken)

Why would they need radio hits? They’re not a mainstream band nor do they get any radio play from their songs (with the exception of pull me under). The reason why they made it so big in the first place was because of their progressive metal roots…and nothing else. Their last few albums can hardly be considered progressive anymore, but rather an edgier form of metal with their usual shredding.
I don’t know why people are saying that DT is trying to make some radio friendly type of songs. They did exactly the same thing with Pull me Under and it’s still on of the DT greatest song.
The real version of this song is 8 minutes longs.. we can’t say that they’re not doing progressive music anymore.
A Rite of Passage is a really great song and I have no doubt that the new album will be amazing.
