Ex Fear Factory Singer Burton C. Bell Says That Metal Really Isn’t His Thing
May 7, 2008 by Scott
Metalsucks.net recently interviewed former Fear Factory singer. Here is a little bit of the interview.
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ASCENSION OF THE WATCHERS / EX-FEAR FACTORY SINGER BURTON C. BELL
MetalSucks: So you have a new record out, Numinosum. In the most abstract way, can you talk about the new record a bit?
Burton C. Bell: Abstract? Purple. (laughs). Well it’s definitely a whole completely different direction for me. It’s a different direction from what people are accustomed to from me. For me it’s the type of music that I’ve always been into, that I’ve enjoyed, that’s more a part of me. The music that people know me from is obviously Fear Factory, and other music that I’ve assisted on vocals with, but to me this is truly the music that I like. When I was in Fear Factory and people would ask me what kind of music I’d been listening to, I’d always been naming non-metal bands. Once in a while there’d be a metal band that’d be cool… like the hard rock bands, or the stoner metal bands, and that kind of stuff. Sleep I liked a lot. Godflesh, that was more industrial. I was more of a post-punk kind of guy. I liked Nick Cave around the first Fear Factory record, Nick Cave for inspiration. So to me, I’m primarily expressing the music that I like to listen to, so this is my opportunity. I have a guitar and I’m learning how to play it (laughs), know what I mean? But this record has been a journey… and it’s turned into a spiritual journey. It’s a true expression of my heart and soul.

Burton, why? WHY!?
you’re an awesome metal singer, and have inspired so many people and bands, why not continue to do what you’re made for?
^^Are you listening, James Hetfield or is it way too late for that?
Fear Factory’s sound just didn’t seem the same to me after Dino was let go. It changed in a weird way that I hated. They went from one of my favorites to a band that I now rarely listen to. Even the old stuff. Seeing them at Ozfest 97 was amazing though.
I never said Fear Factory was any good these days or that he should continue in Fear Factory, Once Dino left it went all down hill, but there is always that little glimmer of hope that maybe… just maybe, Burton could manage to do something metal, not what he’s done now :/ it just doesn’t seem right to me.
I know you didn’t, man. I was just saying.
