Folk Metal?…The Other F-Word?
January 31, 2008 by Scott

Thats what I said the first time I heard it. Not something thats big in the states yet but if you want know more about this, er…genre then Check out Metal Music Blog. Headbanger (From Finland himself) mentions Turisas, a Finnish band that I thought was absolutely crazy when I first heard their sound. Another band someone kinda turned me on to was Eluveitie (The above pictured band). In my opinion their sound is much better than Turisas, but thats just my opinion. I honestly haven’t and have no desire to pursue any further into this sub-genre. But to each his own I suppose. Here is a short excerpt from Metal Music Blog’s Folk Metal Post:
Some of those numerous bands are folk metal bands. Hold on! What is folk metal? According to Wikipedia, “folk metal is a diverse collection of music, encompassing a wide variety of different styles and approaches. As the name suggests, the one common ground between folk metal bands is a shared interest in fusing heavy metal music with elements of folk music“.

Thanks for linking, Scott!
Yeah, as I mentioned in my blog, I’m not much into folk metal. I would not turn off my radio if I heard Turisas, but I’m not going to buy their album.
Btw, Turisas is going to play in Finnish Metal Expo

I’ll be there. Not because of Turisas but few other bands (Norther, Mustasch, Soilwork and Stam1na).
Eluveitie is one of my favorite bands of the genre, though far from the “norm.” Actually, there is no norm. It’s not even so much a genre but a whole category of ‘em. There’s black metal styled folk, like some Primordial or Geasa, and then there’s ultra-cheezmo power metal stuff, too. Saw a Tyr vid recently that was wonderful, but not very metal at all. Eh, depends on your taste. It’s a nice change of pace, sometimes.
