Goldsboro NC’s The Ruin Live 7/15
Last night I went to check out local band The Ruin not too far from my house. It started out kind of a strange night but ended up being pretty cool. When I expected to go to Goldsboro, NC to watch them play I really didn’t expect it to be out in the country. But when I map-quested it I had a feeling that that’s where I was headed.
When you’re a local band in a small city, trying to establish a name for yourself so that you can start gigging at bigger venues you have to play when you can, where you can, and however you can. Most of the time when I have seen a band doing just that it’s been at a party of some sort but this was some unconventional shit that seemed to work. I present to you…Ol’ Zeek’s. Ol’s Zeek’s is nothing more than what I think is a pig barn. At the end is a flat bed truck back used as a very cramped stage. A dirt floor made the place a bit dusting when people started moshing and also made it hard for pictures.
On to the acts. The first band to play was Something For Nothing. A cool sounding band that you would swear has a metal-core sound to them, but when you listen to their CD it almost sounds more screamo. Either way, they played well and sounded good. They also tried to put on a good show when they played which I thought looked a little over-enthusiastic for the circumstances…but hell, rock on!
Soon after The Ruin set up their equipment, minus a Bass player on the flat-bed stage. Two half stacks, an un-mic’d drum set that had seen better days and a microphone through a P.A. that was on the floor. Not a fancy set up by any means but it worked. The Ruin played hard throughout and I think movement would have been a little more likely if there was more room on the stage. At first the P.A. was a bit loud and vocals were actually drowning out the guitars a bit. The main problem with a set up like this is that you have to have everything mixing well, if vocals are too loud then you don’t hear the guitars, if you
turn up the guitars you won’t hear the drums. So when you’re playing raw like this you have to have everything at just the right levels otherwise it sounds like shit. However they sounded good. The set lasting about 30 minutes or so seemed to go quick but it probably felt like a lot longer for The Ruin with the heat inside the barn. Hopefully when they finish getting their demos mastered and press rolling they can start playing bigger venues and maybe get on their way.
Check out their Myspace page. They have a few tracks up you can download. If you like The Red Chord, The Black Dahlia Murder, Kataklysm, then chances are you’ll dig The Ruin. Keep an eye out on their myspace for updates.

Their singer said they had about 7 songs recorded and a bunch still being mastered. I’m eager to hear it all when it’s finished
