GorgorVarg Updates

March 10, 2009 by Scott

It’s funny, a girl on Twitter yesterday asked me about updates on, as she put it “Gorgorvarg” (Gorgoroth and Varg Vikernes). I open up my RSS this morning and the very first two things are Gorgoroth and Varg Vikerns. Here you go, “BlackDeath9431″.

First to Gorgoroth: Original Gorgoroth guitarist, Infernus has won the court battle for rights to the name.  The Norwegian court deemed King Ov Hell’s Gorgoroth name patent invalid. I don’t know how the rest works, but I assume Infernus will ensure that he has exclusive trademark property of the name. Let me catch you up to speed on this whole drama case.

  • Infernus starts Gorgoroth in 1992.
  • Gaahl comes on as vocalist in 1998
  • King Ov Hell comes on Bass in 1999
  • In 2007 things started to get shaky and Gaahl and King tried to fire Infernus, and register a trademark patent for the name behind Infernus’s back.
  • Infernus claims the trademark patent is illegal and takes them to court
  • Norwegian courts deem the patent invalid and it looks like Gaahl and King Ov Hell will have to find another name to go by.

Varg Vikernes: If you’re really in to Black metal then you probably already know the story behind Varg Vikernes of Burzum murdering Mayhem guitarist Euronymous in 1993. Some say it was self defense, but who really knows besides the two involved and one can’t tell his side of the story. He’s also been suspected of church burning in Norway.

Varg was serving a 21 year sentence for the murder and it was announced on March 10th that he has been approved for parole and will be release soon. He served 16 years of the sentence and was denied parole 4 times. During this 16 years he has been allowed to leave the prison and have conjugal visits with his wife of whom he has a baby with. Varg also has a 16 year old daughter.

Does this mean that Varg, or Kristian Larsson Vikernes as his family knows him, will continue Burzum? Varg claims that he is settling on his farm in Telemark with his family, but hasn’t entirely ruled out music.

“I look forward the day that I could work on my farm, create music, write books and be with the wife and kids around the clock — and live a normal life. I have received tremendous support from my family. It means a lot.”
