Great Expectations and Preparation for Disappointment
I replied to a comment today about the Headline of my last Metallics Post “Metallica Fans Complain…What Else Is New.” Well it got me thinking and I’ve come to a conclusion that I’m sure many have already figured out. We as metal-heads have come to expect too much from our favorite artists. When we buy a CD and we really like it we want more. We not only want more…we want it to be better than the last so we expect our favorite band to out-do themselves and the bands expects that from us. The gratification for most bands is to please their fans and when they don’t please their fans they feel like they have let us down and we all know how that feels.
Sometimes bands try too hard to out-do themselves and it becomes a total flop and potentially ruins the bands image…for a few years until the next highly anticipated record is to come out. Then the record label promotes and hypes the record, the magazines jump in, the critics critique, some good, some bad and we wait for the day. We wait, getting ourselves more worked up, ready for that next “Kick-Ass, Back to their roots” record. The day comes, we rush out to buy the record, tear the plastic from the outside, struggle with that stupid sticker that keeps the case closed, pop that baby in, press play and…the first song plays. Ehhh…it’s ok, whats next… not better-not worse,>> My god this is crap>>I’ll get used to it>>Excuse>>excuse>>Disappointment. In the end we are disappointed and we listen to it a few more times trying to get used to it but its no use. We put it away with the rest of our CD’s and glance at it every now and then. Take it out every so often and try to have one more listen to it but its no use. We wait for the next one, waiting with just a sliver of hope that it will be a lot better…but it rarely is.
Then there are those bands that are just consistent. They make a great CD, then they make another great CD…not better than the last but just as good. These are the ones that get the most listening time because they are consistent. The old one gets shuffled in with the new one and you don’t really ever stop listening to the old one. One has something the other doesn’t have and visa-versa.
Then there are the bands that “up” themselves every time without a hitch. Every next CD is better than the last, the ones that get better as they go. But fear not…the ones that go up and up will come down and down. The ones that stay consistent will sell the most because consistency builds longevity.
Bottom Line is that we need to teach ourselves to not expect so much from the next CD and just hope that its just as good as the last, and if the last one sucked then expect the next one too also, especially if it has the same producer (for example Bob Rock). Perhaps if we do this we’ll find ourselves complaining less and enjoying the good things of the past a lot more often.
