Grip Inc. Frontman Gus Chambers Dies At 50

I talked about Grip Inc. awhile back. A great band. Highly under-rated and under-publicized. I don’t know how this took so long to hit the wires, but it appears that Gus Chambers took his own life last weekend (October 13th). A huge and saddening surprise to a lot of people, especially his friends, fans and band mates throughout the years. The crazy part is that absolutely nobody saw this coming. Suppressed inner demons get the best of some of the brightest personalities without showing any signs. No further details into his death have been released yet. You can read some of the testimonials given by some of the people he new and worked with over the years at The Coventry Telegraph, out of Coventry England where Gus first made his mark on the music scene. Gus was 50. I imagine we’ll hear something from Dave Lombardo in the coming days. RIP, Gus.
hi this is gary(gus) niece,,,, just want to say uncle gary was 50 years old,,,this has come as a shock to us all and many people are very sad! he will live on in our memeries forever, as he was a fabulous person and a fantastic preformer..and will be greatly missed x x x x

I am trying to get in touch with the Chambers family. I am actually Gus daughter and have been estranged from him for most of my life. I would like to extend my condolences and possible know what happened.
Pretty tragic. Grip Inc was a highly skilled group of musicians. I enjoyed listening to them and I am saddened to hear of Gus’ death. RIP.

Still missed as a singer, missed as a musician and i am sure, missed as a family man. Gus, when you recorded, you gave me not only goosebumps, but strength. Rest well.
I was part of Squad and spent many happy , off my face times with Gus and Danny and Sam during those heady days of punk in Coventry .
I remember Gus trying to drown 6 kittens in the kitchen only to see them all revive – we kept them all in the end !
I broke Sam’s arm when I took him out of the back of my motorcycle…….
I shaved Gus’s hair off completely ( he was in a drunkend slumber ) when he pissed me off after a gig at The Cavern with The Specials .
He was always a great laugh , full of character , a true star !
I liked him the best when he hit Terry Hall over the head with a fire extinguisher.
Never short of an idea – we booked a gig in Oxford and he asked me to go round the pub and give each girl a brown paper bag….when he introduced the number- “Put a bag on your head” he told everyone that Richard had handed out bags to the ugly girls 1 I got hammered !
Stranglers gig – while a support act only Sqaud got the best responses and achieved Record of the Week with the NME !
The band was full life and had a great following up and down the country .
Last I heard of Gary , was that he had gone to the US…….
I introduced him to Dave Lee Roth in The Cathouse and Guns n Roses – he should have been up there with the rest of the stars.
Funny guy who made me laugh …. and cry .
Jerry Dammers has 2 front teeth missing… why ? Gig in Brighton with The Specials , early hours at some party Jerry fell asleep and Gus got us all to get our Dicks out and put them all around Jerry’s open moth – got some good photos ……Jerry came around and all hell broke loose…..
We couldn’t pay the bill in the morning at the B & B so somebody left a turd on the bed for the Cleaner – Sam – was it yours ?
He came to my wedding – dressed in PVC with a huge spread of yellow hair – he convinced all the guys to wear false beards and moustaches cos he had heard I had grown a beard – what a sight when 30 punks turned up at the Registry Office ! When the bit came up “is there anyone ahave a reason why ?? cannot get married” Gus shouted out ” Because he’s a shit stabber” – that went down well with my new inlaws !
vERY SORRY TO HEAR THAT HE IS NO LONGER WITH US ALL. GOD BLESS HIM !
