Hit Paraders Top 100’s of Heavy Metal

by User ImageMetal Martyr on August 5th, 2007

Laziness has overcome me the last two days and now it’s time to play catch up.

Hit Parader has put together a list of heavy metal’s top 100. Top 100 bassists & drummers in the same list (kinda odd), Top 100 guitarists and top 100 vocalists. Now within these top 100 are top ten lists I’ll post a few details but if you want to see the complete list your gonna have to shell out $8.99 for the magazine. I don’t agree with a lot of them because some of them are not heavy metal and some are just straight out Bulls**t. For instance Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam, clearly not heavy metal is #56 in the top 100 metal guitarists yet Marty Friedman didn’t make the top 100 at all and thats just blasphemous if you ask me. Here are the top ten from each top 100 list.

Top ten of the top 100 Bass/drummers: 1. John Bonham 2. Lars Ulrich 3. Gene Simmons 4. Tommy Lee 5. Steve Harris 6.Nikki Sixx 7. Geddy Lee 8. Geezer Butler 9. Vinnie Paul 10. Cliff Burton

Top 10 of the top 100Metal guitarists: 1. Eddie Van Halen 2. Jimi Hendrix 3. Jimmy Page 4. Angus Young 5. Tony Iommi 6. Jeff Beck 7. Randy Rhoads 8. Eric Clapton 9. Joe Perry 10. Kieth Richards.

Top 10 of the top 100 Metal Vocalists: 1. Robert Plant 2. Rob Halford 3. Steven Tyler 4. Chris Cornell 5. Bon Scott 6. Freddie Mercury 7. Bruce Dickinson 8. Ozzy Osbourne 9. Paul Rodgers 10. Ronnie James Dio.

Obviously HP doesn’t have a clue and can’t decipher the difference between heavy metal and anything else because these lists are all mixed up. There are guitarist and vocalist that can never be put into the category of heavy metal. Below are few more lists they put together. These make a little more sense but still lack a bit.

All time top 10 vocalists of the 90’s: 1. Axl Rose 2. Chris Cornell 3. Layne Stanley 4. Eddie Vedder 5. Kurt Cobain 6. James Hetfield 7. Jonathan Davis 8. Marilyn Manson 9. Trent Reznor 10. Dave Mustaine

All time top 10 shredder kings: 1. Steve Vai 2. Joe Satriani 3. Paul Gilbert 4. Yngwie Malmsteen 6. Marty Friedman 7. Tony Macalpine 8. Vinnie Moore 9. Steve Morse 10. John Petrucci. (Notice number 5 is missing. Thats the genius’s over at Hit Parader, Way to go senior editor!)

Thats about it. If you feel like spending $8.99 just to be disappointed like I am go for it. I should have known better though. Hit Parader is a BS magazine and with little or no useful information in it. Most of the time its repeat B.S. of old news or interview and then they rape you wallet with crap like this.

Don’t get me wrong Clapton and Jeff Beck are phenomenal guitarists - albeit BLUES guitarists. Why isn’t Dime in the top 10? Zakk Wylde? These guys kept metal guitar alive during the grungy 90s. I mean COME ON!

Absolutely, Brenden. Theres no doubt that all of the guitarists on the list are great talents in the guitar world…but metal is metal and most of the guys on this list are not metal.
Dimebag is #12 and Zakk is #29
Duane Allman and many others do not belong on this list!

Wow these lists are completely messed up. I seriously have too many people to list. Where’s Tipton? K.K. Downing? John Myung? If Rush is metal (Due to Geddy being on the list) where’s Peart? I only skimmed the list but Dream Theater anyone? they took Prog Metal to a new level.

These are horrible lists even IF you include the non-metal.

    These writers fail at life.

Bo, you gotta think about it this way. At the time and in his own right Jimi was an amazing guitarist as well as showman.

Today is different. You can’t compare todays guitar players to the ones of then. However I can understand where your coming from. I think the Beatles are one of the most over rated bands of all time.

Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit and David Draiman of Disturbed deserve to be in the top 20 Vocalists list atleast. Kirk Hamett of Metallica and Dan Donegan of Disturbed are the current best guitarists while Limp Bizkit’s Sam Rivers is the king of bass. John Otto and Mike Wengren have got the phat ass beats ever heard by me.

The best guitarist is Munky from Korn. then it is Joe Perry. Then it is Mick from Slipknot

He is well known as big “Heavy Metal hater” in our country. How happy he is.

While your personal list isn’t bad, Robin, I do have a problem with placing Geezer Butler over Cliff Burton. I would replace Kirk Hammet and James Hetfield with Dave Mustaine, who is a better guitar player than both of those guys combined and team him with Marty Friedman.

But what I really want to know is…who the hell is James Newstead?

Actually, I just listened to early Metallica and you’re right, Burton is better than Geezer Butler. Sorry, but I still prefer Hammett and Hetfield to Mustaine and Friedman! And I meant to put Jason Newstead, who is another ex bass player of Metallica.

I knew what you meant with the newstead thing. But seriously, when was the last time you saw Hetfield rip a solo, no less a solo like Dave Mustaine. Also, these days Hammett uses the wah-wah pedal way too much and it just kind of makes a mediocre solo sound better than it really is.

Solo’s are just a small part of the song. Fair enough, Mustaine is great, but Hammett and Hetfield just make brilliant riffs and solo’s that are more to my liking than those of Dave Mustaine.

mostly the debate is arisen on the term Heavy Metal instead of Hard Rock or even Rock.. if the term Metal replaced by Rock..we surely will read in peace…LOL…the Greatest also means much…I’ve grown listening 80st to now Hard Rock and Heavy Metal, these are my preference, but who cares?
Vocalist: Dio, Bach, Anselmo, Cornell, and Coverdale…Guitarist: Malmsteen, Van Halen, Akira, Darrel, Vai…Drummer: Franky Banaly, A.J Pero, Portnoy, Ulrich, Torres…Bassist: Harris, Butler, Newstead, Flea, Vinnie Paul…they are not in order already…
