In Flames | A Sense Of Purpose

by User ImageMetal Martyr on March 29th, 2008

inflamesasop In Flames Sense Of Purpose is not supposed to be released until April 1st here in the states so when I found it on the shelf at a store that usually doesn’t carry this type of music I was pleasantly surprised and bought it. I know stores are supposed to follow guidelines on releases and this was probably an oversight on their part. Oh well, better for me I guess.

This is the first In Flames CD I have ever bought and I’m really liking it. I have heard other In Flames songs here and there on compilations and I liked the songs but did not really have a lot of interest in the band until I read about them on Marko’s Metal Music Blog and constantly hearing about them on Gigantour press.

Some of the songs are heavy and some of them are heavy but rather slower than most Swedish metal songs but in a good way. The guitar work is great, the drumming is as well and well as you guessed it, there are keyboards which about ten years ago I would have not found desirable in a metal band but with bands like In Flames and Children Of Bodom using them in such a define way that mixes well with the music I find them a unique addition. It keeps everything else from becoming stale.

I’m not the type to break down a CD review song by song, especially when every song on the cd is good. My favorite as of now is Disconnected, that has a cool guitar rhythm riff and a line that says I may feel like shit, but at least I feel something.” So whether you are an In Flames Fan (Are In Flames Fans called Flamers?) or not and you think that you may like this album I would suggest going out and getting it next week or at least sample it from a friend and see if it’s to your taste. It also doesn’t hurt to read the article on Metal Music Blog to learn more about it.
