Let’s Talk Slayer…

by Scott on July 6th, 2008

Slow weekend for news so what better band to talk about than Slayer!

Not to far back, maybe a month or so I bought new/used versions of God Hates Us All and Diabolus In Musica. These two albums I did not have good physical copies of. God Hates Us All was copied from a friend and Diabolus In Musica somehow got a huge crack in it years ago. So when I saw them come in at a local new/used music store for $7.99 each, I figured why not?

diabolusinmusica Daibolus In Musica was Slayer’s first studio album of all original material since Divine intervention and everyone was waiting for new Slayer. For the people that enjoy old school punk/hardcore/straightedge/crossover, Undisputed Attitude was a comfortable pacifier for them and a lot of metal heads that were not into the old school stuff I mentioned still enjoyed U/A. Diabolus In Musica brought back a better sound to the Slaytanic fans. There was just something about Divine Intervention that just didn’t quite hit the spot for most Slayer fans. There was a couple of songs on it that sounded o.k. but for the most part it just wasn’t right. The Diabolus In Musica support tour was my first Slayer concert and it was amazing, with the exception of the opening act which was System Of A Down, who I came to like a little later but their live show was annoyingly terrible. Before the show we went to a signing at a record store which was cool and we got to meet the band and get shit signed.

ghua God Hates Us All came out in 2001 on a day that most will remember as 9/11 and not for the date that God Hates Us All was released. It was an ironic and grim coincidence. God Hates Us All was just another good Slayer album. The reason I say “just another good album” is because we all need to be honest with ourselves and agree with others when they say that Slayer hasn’t put out a really epic album since Seasons In The Abyss. The main thing I don’t like about a lot of modern day Slayer is that Tom Araya’s vocals sound more like he is trying to yell at the top of lungs a lot of the time and there is a limit to how many times a song’s lyrics can contain the word “fuck” before it gets stale.

I don’t think there will ever be another Slayer album that could possibly top Seasons or even come close to South Of Heaven. I’ll be re-buying other Slayer albums every now and then when I can find them used or at a reasonable price. Sometimes you have to replace your old cds, if not for anything but your personal collection value.

Diabolus sucked. I loved God Hates Us All, really loved South of Heaven, and absolutely worship Hell Awaits. But although the music on Diabolus sucked, the cover art kills. I am not sure what that freaky dude picture is on the cover, but it freaks me out every time I look at it.

I love the way Hell Awaits starts. In fact I probably don’t listen to Hell Awaits enough.

Diabolus was better than Divine Intervention. You gotta agree with me on that. If someone told me that I would only be aloud to have one slayer album for the rest of my life I think I would go with Decade Of Aggression. That on right there has all the good stuff and you can’t beat their live sound.
