Life, Sex & Death: The Silent Majority

Back in 1993 I heard a band on the radio during the late hours on 94.9 Wkll K-rock in upstate NY. It was some guttural sounding death metal stuff they played on “The Sound And The Fury“. I thought I heard them name the band as LSD or “Life, Sex & Death” and I had to have it. So I bought the cd called The Silent Majority and was soon kind of disappointed. The band on the CD sounded nothing like the band on the radio but I soon realized that it didn’t really matter who that other band was. What I held in my hand was a diamond in the ruff at a time when glam had finally faded and grunge was taking over. Sure there was still a lot of metal out there but as far as hard rock/metal, there wasn’t much going on besides the stuff I already had.

Life, Sex & Death came out of Chicago and was a very talented band…with a gimmick. Their lead singer kind of played off a role as homeless man named Stanley, with a slightly drunken slur when he sang. The music on The Silent Majority, their one and only release, was really good, but some of the lyrics were laughable. Not laughable in the extremely funny novelty type way, but more or less tongue in cheek songs. I don’t have much more information than that, but this band probably could have been huge had they been a little more serious with what they did. However, The Silent Majority is a great record for a time when Stone Temple Pilots were way overplayed and grunge was at it’s peak. You can find The Silent Majority on Reprise Records.
