Light This City | Facing The thousand
I was offered a chance by Prosthetic Records PR to interview Light This City at the March 5th ATR show. I quickly accepted but I didn’t know anything about this band. I had seen pictures in press releases but never really gave them much thought. Well I’m glad I didn’t turn down the offer because I’m eager to meet the band behind the fury of Light This City…
Prosthetic Records sent me the two LTC cds from their label, Remains Of The Gods and Facing The Thousand. Let me first tell you that I’m not a big fan of women vocalist in this type of music. I’m not a big fan of Arch Enemy for this reason. I’m not a sexist pig, I’m just don’t find many female death/thrash metal vocalist appealing. Laura Nichol is an exception. When I first started listening I hadn’t really gave it much thought and didn’t realize it was a girl singing until I read the sleeve. Call me naive, whatever.
Before I get too in depth in the vocal work let me tell you about the rest of it. The guitars, drums and bass shred-it-up! I can’t think of a better expression than that. Brian Forbes and and Steve Hoffman work well together like Oli and Mike from ATR. Mike Dias does a great job on the Bass as does Ben Murray on the drums. Laura’ vocals I would most compare to that of Carcass’s Jeff Walker.
The first and title song Facing the thousands will leave you winded and wanting more. right into Cradle For A King which is just as ripping. The breakdown in Exile reminds slows things down a bit for a minute with an awesome solo. Maddening Swarm picks it right back up and in your face. Fear Of Heights features The Black Dahlia Murder’s Trevor Strnad on guest vocals and is a much darker song than the rest of the record.
I give Light This City’s Facing The Thousands
