Machine Head’s The Blackening Kicks Ass

by User ImageMetal Martyr on August 4th, 2008

Machine Head The Blackening I’ve held off for a long time to buy Machine Head’s The Blackening because I hadn’t heard much off of it and the last one I bought (Through The Ashes Of Empires) I really didn’t care for all that much. I grabbed two copies of The Blackening on my way into the signing on Friday and the band signed both of them I figured I was going to buy it sooner or later so why not now and get it signed. The second copy will be given away here some time this month.

I’ve listened to The Blackening all the way through twice now and I’m really diggin’ it. Not only that but I started listening to Through The Ashes Of Empires and I find that that’s starting to grow on me a bit more too. I haven’t listened to Ashes in about two years and I was kind of in a different taste of metal at that time so that could be why I didn’t really like. This past Friday wasn’t the first time I saw Machine Head live. I saw them 11 years ago at Ozfest 97. I think they were supporting The More Things Change back then, which was a great album too and put on a hell of a show that day as well.

I have loved every single Machine Head album ( even The Burning Red, which many fans of the band despise ). But live, I was very much underwhelmed by them. Too loud, too muddy in the mix. I am glad you caught them on a good day.

the blackening was actually my first machine head album. i had heard bits and pieces of them here and there but it seemed everyone thought this album was the one that was going to lead us all to the metal holy lands. i picked it up a few months after its release and i wasn’t disapointed. i don’t really know what else to try from them though.

Tate: “Through The Ashes…” and “Burn My Eyes” are where you want to go next. Skip their third and fourth albums altogether, though- they sold out big-time, and it showed. Glad they’re back, though.
