Megadeth Under The Covers

June 24, 2008 by Scott

hidden-treasures.jpgI tell you, I am all reviewed out this week already. I really hate having to do bad reviews or sometimes mixed reviews. From ADAI’s …I Carry Ep, to Nostradamus and as of last night, Motley Crüe’s Saints Of L.A. I’ve about had all I can take. Luckily I have the new Neuraxis to do a review on and so far there is nothing I can say negative about that. Moving on to the title…

Megadeth over the years on studio albums have done some great cover songs, making it their own version and doing justice to the original. In fact their first three records all had cover songs on them. Killing Is My Business had These Boots, an odd choice to cover as was Peace Sells cover of I Ain’t Superstitious. When So Far So Good came out with the Sex Pistols cover of Anarchy In The U.K. , it was a magnificent remake of a timeless punk classic and done a lot better than Motley Crue did on the Decade Of Decadence album.

Both of the Nativity In Black, Black Sabbath Tribute Albums had great covers of Paranoid and Never Say Die. Hidden Treasures had songs from movie sound tracks and cover songs all in one short but cool collection.

What I’m getting at is that Megadeth and Dave Mustaine have done many cover songs over the years and not once have I ever heard anyone say how they butchered the song or deviated too far from the original with maybe the exception of These Boots, which Jessica Simpson later made into a much more provocative and sexy cover of her own.

Cover songs are a staple in the industry today. A lot of bands feel that if they put out a record with a cover song, chances are the cover song will get some air-play and will carry them to stardom…and sometimes it blows up in their face. More often than not the cover song is the only one worth listening to on the record. What I like is when a band just does it for fun and throws it on the record as a bonus. It’s almost expected of bands like Children Of Bodom, but Alexi and the crew seem to be able to pull off any cover song.

Do you have a favorite cover song?

I love most of the covers Megadeth has ever done (except No More Mr Nice Guy – I just don’t care for the song), but I think my fave is Paranoid. Not only because it is faster and more aggressive than the original, but also because at the end Nick forgets to stop playing and you can hear Dave yelling, “Nick! NICK!!!” I love that they included that little blooper on the album. They have such a great sense of humor….

yeah, I love it when you hear Nick yelling ‘fuck me running!’ at the end…

I have to admist, Land of Confusion by Disturbed was a fave song when I was a lot younger… shame everything else they did sucked!
