Metal Martyr and What It Means to Me!
When I was trying to think of names for this blog a lot of things came across my mind and I had to do a lot of searching to find a cool name that wasn’t already being used. After a few hours of searching and researching the name Metal Martyr kinda popped into my head.
Now when people hear the word martyr these days the first thing that comes to mind is radical middle east Jihad. In the media these days you often hear news of suicide bombers being martyrs for Islam and how they are so willing to give their life for their faith. Well thats kinda where I am when it comes to music and heavy metal. I’m not saying I’d die for the cause but I feel pretty strong about heavy metal and the culture.
A martyr is defined by dictionary.com as: A person who is put to death or endures great suffering on behalf of any belief, principle, or cause.
There are a few other definitions but this is the one I chose because it best fits into context the perception that I’m trying to express. As metal heads we are often persecuted in one way or another for the way we either dress, the music we listen to or perhaps the way we live and still we persevere and do what we love to do and listen to what we want to. If someone says that metal is uncool we don’t just stop listening because someone else says its not cool. We don’t just lay down and take a beating. If someone says that heavy metal causes people to do stupid things we don’t just agree. Stupid people cause stupid things to happen. If that was the case then Tipper Gore would have won and there would be no more heavy metal.
Dee Snider and Frank Zappa didn’t sit back and let them scrutinize the music when the PMRC had them in a courtroom. No, he stood up for himself and his music after being accused of wrongdoings. In the end the Parental Advisory Label that was supposed to deter record sales actually boosted them. So NO, we as metal heads and music lovers don’t just throw in the towel and stop listening to metal if someone else doesn’t think its cool but on the contrary some of you should be ashamed because a lot of you think it uncool to like Nu-metal. You should be ashamed because there is a lot of cool nu-metal out there and your missing out if your not listening just cause someone else says its crap. I listen to a lot of Nu-metal and I like it no matter what anyone else says. I like a lot of different metal and nu-metal is one of them. I wouldn’t expect a fan of Papa Roach to stop listening to them just cause I say that they are lousy and they don’t ever have more than one good song per record (Which is true!!).
So what is it to be a Metal Martyr? It means standing up for what you believe in no matter what anyone else thinks! Your going to be laughed at sometimes and called names like hairbag or devil whorshipper or loser or freak all because of the music you listen to. Suck it up and be proud of what you like and who you are. You don’t have to be popular, you don’t have to be a poser! But if you hang up you horns cause someone says that its not cool then you are a loser and a poser and we don’t want you anyway!
Sometimes if I mention something about metal to someone they might say “You like all that head banging crap?” and I usually respond “You like all that twing twangy, my dog died and wife left me crap?” or depending who I’m talking to “You like all that Bitches, ho’s, cash money and drive by crap?” So yeah I do like all that head banging crap and I like it even more when you play it backwards and the paint start peeling off the walls!
Be true to yourself and the music. Be a Metal Martyr!
