Metal Shavings And Friday Night Update

Slow news day today So I’m gonna take it easy tonight and relax after a long week at work. I have a new CD to review from Prosthetic Records. A Japanese band called Grief Of War that will have their US debut released next month. I also picked up some old stuff today that I’ll go over here pretty soon on an Old School Review. Below are a few news clip.

The “Legendary” Punk at The Sex Pistols are working on new material. Whoopedy-doo! Honestly this may be a big deal for some old school punks but what can you really do as an old school punk band these days. It’s going to sound all updated and out dated at the same time.

Exodus has been added to the already stacked Wacken Open Air Fest ‘08.

Byzantine, the West Virginian band I reviewed earlier will release Oblivion Beckons on Tuesday January 22nd. Check them out.

Gene Simmons got fired from Celebrity Apprentice because he’s a stupid Sexist pig. Well that and his ego didn’t sell something. Perhaps if his presentation had some Kiss make-up plastered all over it it would have sold.

Five Finger Death Punch pulled out of the All That Remains Tour. No loss there in my opinion.

If you haven’t checked it out already, Dave Mustaine in all of his ego driven glorious wisdom said some pretty dumb shit in a revolver interview. Check out my segment of it and read the rest of the excerpt from the link to blabbermouth. You can check out the whole interview in the next Revolver Magazine Issue.

Speaking of Revolver, I started a subscription a few months ago and after the first two magazines I stopped payment on the subscription. Why? because I didn’t even think it was worth the 12 bucks a year for it, especially after Avenged Sevenfold was on the cover. Now they want their money and have probably spent more money in postal fees sending me bills for their shitty magazine than the actual subscription is worth. I stopped buying Metal Edge cause it started sucking a long time ago. Circus has also gone to shit and Metal Hammer out of the UK has more ads than articles. If anyone can suggest a good metal magazine please do so cause I haven’t found any lately. All of them seem to be going top shit and covering the worst Fuc*ing bands that aren’t even metal.

Welcome to the death of print media for niche interests. But hey - you know that’s not such a bad thing. Because it leaves space for people like us to deliver people the material they actually want! :)

Well said, as usual Paul. I can understand sometimes in a magazine where there is a band covered that I don’t lie…but when it stops so low as to let in such garbage as Him, The Used and Avenged Sevenfold it starts getting repulsive.

On another note, I picked up Led Zeppelins Mothership cd set today. Something about a Zeppelin Compilation that you just can’t go wrong with. I love it.

Well, that’s the thing - the mags cover those bands because those bands will shift more issues; more issues shifted is more ad revenue for them; more ad revenue is one more month of avoiding the liquidation people. Sad, but understandable.

But the web is different, and the mags know it. That’s why all the sharp mags are shifting over that way, especially the youth market stuff. I’d give Kerrang and NME about another two years before they’re predominantly web rather than predominantly print. Metal Hammer etc. may hold out longer, but only because of the older demographics who grew up on print mags that have stuck with the metal scene past their college years.

I can’t say I’m that sad. I’d have liked to be a reviewer or columnist for print music mags, but that was before they watered down in desperation. Kerrang is just Smash Hits with the eyeliner on the guys instead of the girls. Nothing against the bands or their fans, but the coverage is so vapid I can’t be bothered with it.

The real content is always somewhere online.

Try Decibel or Metal Maniacs. I gave up on Revolver too and Metal Hammer and BWBK are imports and too expensive.
