My Advice To Young Metalheads

I sit here some days and sift through comments on Metal Martyr, Blabbermouth, Metalsucks.net, etc. and I see so much ignorance when it comes to metal fans these days. This is where I get most of my ideas from like the Pointing Fingers Part 1 and Part 2, I Only Listen To Underground Metal, and What Is Real Metal.I see closed minded children spouting off at the mouth before even taking time to think about what they are saying. So here is a little advice I’d like to pass on to young metal fans. I think most readers, especially the ones around the same age as myself can agree with me on this stuff. And kiddies, just cause you’re younger than I am doesn’t mean you listen to cooler shit than I do. Live and learn. As you mature you will understand.

First, don’t be afraid to listen to other music besides metal. There is a lot of great music out there. You’re just depriving your ears and mind of some really good stuff. Just don’t call shit like The Mars Volta and Avenged Sevenfold metal!

As life moves on faster and faster, life changing events happen. You’ll find yourself maturing and even though you’re growing up that doesn’t mean that you have to stop listening to good music. Your beliefs will change on a lot of things and you’ll see some of the metal heroes you have come to idolize say and do some pretty stupid stuff. Take it with a grain of salt and remember the great things they have done as opposed to the stupid things.

Idolize… oh yeah, that brings me to this. Don’t idolize ANYONE, I don’t care how cool you think they are. Be a fan but don’t idolize, because then you become what you hate…a pop music fan that idolizes and cries whenever they see their “Idol”. They are just people too.

Don’t forget where you come from. Your roots are your soul.

Be cool to the people that are cool to you. Sometimes you can even be cool to the people that aren’t cool to you. They will see that you’re a good person and stop judging you on your outward appearance. Once you get one to see the real you it’s like a domino effect. They’ll spread the word that you may dress a bit different but you’re really a cool person. If you’re a dick to them all the time they are going to treat you as such and assume that we are all like you. Thanks, but no thanks.

Be responsible for your actions. Don’t blame the music. If you have problems on the home-front seek help, not retribution.

You don’t have to look metal to be metal. When you’re young you want to be just like all your metal favorites. I’ve known many people that you would never think that’s what they are into. People think the same of me all the time. At almost 32 I try to keep a mostly professional appearance (No suit and tie) when working and I relax a bit when I’m not. I don’t wear a loggers chain on my wallet but I’ll throw on the checkerboard vans and my Dickies jacket with the Lamb Of God patch on it when I leave the house. Gotta represent somehow.

Lastly…”You can’t be something you’re not, be yourself, by yourself, stay away from me. A lesson learned in life”… Ok, so those aren’t my words, but thank,s Phil Anselmo for helping out. But yeah. Be yourself. Don’t be a poser.

If anyone has anything they want to add, feel free to add it in the comments.

“metal” today just doesn’t seem to be metal anymore. its more like a cooperate takeover of all things underground, and what was the greatest genre of music ever heard. pushing 32 myself i fully relate and understand what you are saying, which is why i am now posting my first response to any blog, webpage, comment or whatever you wanna call it, ever. i have heard so many teens, young adults refer to greenday, blink 182 and the like as being “punk” bands…… got news for you young mislead unlucky fools, though both bands are good in their own way they are not punk. punk is the likes of MInor Threat, gang green, black flag, the ramones, dead kennedys and so on. the same is happening with “metal” its just not metal anymore, yes it is also good in its own right, its heavy, fast, and you cant really dance to it, all the elements of what once was metal, however it is missing alot. the lyrics for one, you cant understand one word in most metal sogs today why? because there are none! its some dude basically grunting into a mic which sounds like a constipated beast trying to shit! what ever happened to true metal? metallica turned cooporate whores, megadeth, well megadeth is still megadeth but with less teeth and more political bullshit. i fully agree with you also about expanding your music styles, i listen to a bit of everything and i do mean everything. i also had to clean up a bit for work. but im still a metal head at heart and have introduced a few of my coworkers who were unfortionate enough to miss the glory days of metal, to bands such as helloween, pantera (cowboys from hell), supltura, king diamond, etc.etc.

  2. Dave says:

    “Kiddies.”

That’s what you meant up there referring to the young folks–”Kiddies.” A diminutive of “Kids.”

I don’t think you meant to refer to the young metal enthusiasts as “kitties.” That’s a way of referring to cats. That’s very different.

OK. Let’s review. “Kiddies” = “kids.” “Kitties” = cats. Or, to put it another way, “The kiddies put their kitties into the oven.”

Are we up to speed now? Excellent.

Now, about this whole, “Who’s more metal” stuff. I think most people put that away once they left junior high school. Aren’t YOU a little old for this? What are you, some kind of pedophile or something?

    Move along, then.

  3. A.j, says:

I agree 100% , You hit it right on the head. It’s a sad trend but hopefully some kid will read this and maybe think outside the box for once and not conform to the social norms set by these posers. Long Live The Metal!!!!

  4. Carlos says:

Yeah, Well said. I back you up on every point except using Phil Anselmo as a reference. Is he metal? Humm, sorry I am a bit old skool. When Pantera came a long there were years of debate about that. But still, your right!

Kids, Metal rulz. We know that, it lives and breaths in our very being, but, don’t for get to breath in other things!!!

    Hail.
    Carlos

  5. Jim OUMF says:

I would add “Don’t get stuck on dogma.” What is and what isn’t metal is not that important. What you like and what you don’t like is what matters. If you like it, it’s good, period. Everyone doesn’t have to like the same stuff.

  6. Nate says:

Some good points in there. I think that even though it is directed to younger people, there are quite a few older metal heads out there who would benefit from the same advice and stop setting such a bad example for the kids.

  7. Mick says:

Dont quote anselmo… he’s a tosser… and probably the biggest posser ever!

  8. Metal freak, no just kidding.. says:

    You’re = you are.
    Your = possessive.
“When your young you want to be just like all your metal favorites.”
This should be you’re as the sentence without the abbreviation would read ‘when you are young’.

  9. David Izdepski says:

That’s real good advice.Hell, I’m 43 and listen to Metal.

  10. Annie says:

hey cool. i agree. im not a metalhead, or anything, at least i dont classify myself as anything. but i do listen to everything…and im not lying i promise. but yah, anyways…

    \m/ >.

  11. Mark says:

Dude, I couldn’t agree more with your comments. We need to pass on our life experiences so far to the young punks. I listen to a variety of music, but I’ll always come back to my old metal favs.
    Good on you, mate

  12. Erk the zerk says:

    So damn true!
“don’t be afraid to listen to other music”

    good article!

  13. YOU MORON says:

As a metal, I say FUCK YOU. Why? Because telling “young metal fans” how to act is…well, moronic. Let’s look at your post.

You said: “And kitties, just cause your younger than I am doesn’t mean you listen to cooler shit than I do.”

You mean “kiddies”, right? Not kittens, but kids… like your post… little kids. That would be “kiddies”. In the same breath you misuse “your”. It’s “you’re”… you know, like “you are”.

You then went on to quote Pantera, mistakenly assuming that Phil wrote that song, and once again saying “you can’t be something your not”. You dimwit. It’s YOU’RE!!! As in YOU ARE.

    Lo

Now that you and YOUR opinion have completely been discredited, based on IGNORANCE alone, I can now go on to make my point, which was not to correct YOUR horrible ignorance of basic English.

Look, you fucking Simpleton. There’s a word out there you might want to research. It’s called HYPOCRISY. Basically, you are condemning a so far not articulated and as of yet not named issue, which I so far have taken to be yo ubeing pissed of at your little brother for telling you that YOUR music sucks, but YOU’RE coming off like the little kid.

This post is whiny, horribly spelled, and infantile.

I hate to break this to you, but I would befriend and respect ANY kid in a jacket with a Lamb of God patch over YOUR illiterate ass any day.

And when I was younger and wore the “uniform”, and sat in while Forbidden, Testament, Exodus and basically the whole metal scene in California blew up, we talked plenty of shit. That just comes with the territory.

You have NO BUSINESS writing any more blogs for this site. Please cease and desist any further attempts at conveying simple thoughts through written language.

oh… signing off in true metal form, STFU, you SUCK, and YOUR taste in music sucks. Prove me wrong. In English.

  14. Maria says:

wonderful blog! as an older metal fan, i have to agree with everything you have said

what i like is the shocked look younger people give you when you say you like metal, just cause i dont dress it doenst mean i dont rock it!

  15. Scott says:

Thanks to everyone that feels the need to correct my spelling and/or grammar. Yes I meant Kiddies not kitties, like the pussies that rather dissect and correct spelling than to actual soak in a point of view. Maybe I’ll hire you one day to be my editor. I’m surprised you haven’t corrected me before when my shitty typing skills force me to hit the ; instead of ‘ every time I type words like don’t as don;t. I try to go back through and edit and correct but sometimes you don’t catch every mistake you make. I suppose your perfect and never make any spelling or grammatical errors when you type.

Anyway, looks like the majority of the people agree with me as opposed to the few that think they are better than me. Your the assholes who are the hypocrites by just writing that garbage alone.

As far as the Anselmo reference. I knew I was gonna get some flack for that but when I started writing “Be yourself” that song popped in my head and I couldn’t resist.

  16. GhoulFather says:

I’m 46 and still a Metalhead, I don’t necessarily like a lot of the Newer Metal stuff…but if it’s Heavy and it crunches I’ll listen to it.
From my teens with Black Sabbath
to the late 80’s and into the 90’s with Danzig
    & Type o Negative.
Is Korn still considered metal , they were at one time along with bush and a few other bands during that period. I have worked in the music industry and seen/heard a lot of Shit come & go,
    HeavyMetal will change
like the people that play it.
As long as it Is Heavy, Loud and has a Crunch,
    I will listen.
And their will always be Headbangers.

  17. A Dad says:

As a father of 2 boys, one 13 the other 10, and also a old school metal head I couldn’t agree with you more. My oldest loves “the harder the better” metal, but at the same time he listens to rock such as Pink Floyd, Rush etc. He hasn’t closed his mind off to other types of music including Roger Waters solo work too. Whats really funny is watching him put on his hunting gear over his death metal clothing, thats my boy!!!! BTW, he’s also in honor band.

  18. Keith says:

Scott – a nicely written article…indeed we should enjoy our heavy-metal music, but the irony is that by expanding into other areas, we then develop a new sense of appreciation for the classical metal hits we have always enjoyed. Ironic? Indeed, but isn’t life ironic in general… I dare say it is!

  19. Scott says:

    To quote “You moron”

“yo ubeing pissed of at your little brother for telling you that YOUR music sucks”

i believe you meant “you being” and “off”

don’t fuckin rip on people and then go do the same thing. fuckin tard cart.

  20. Milander says:

I agree with you. Some kids today claim to be metal but are just following the crowd/trend/current fashion of the day/etc who can blaim them they’re just kids after all.

Don’t fret about the grammar nazi’s they seem to take an unholy pleasure in correcting any blog they come across lol.

37 years old me and still mosh with the best of them, wear my leathers at the weekend and teach in the week wearing suit and tie. Metal is a patch on the heart not something you need to display – maybe that is what the kiddies don’t get yet. For them it’s a stage not a distinct preference in taste or way of life.

Yes, I love metal I also love Gregorian chants, steve vai, mozart and Sebestian Marta. Wimp music, maybe, If you tell me its wimp, fuck you, I don’t care :-) )

Thing is metal is not something you wear it’s something you feel.

    Liked the post, nice one

  21. nismo says:

Just to make one last comment, this is a blog right? written by a normal person, not some professional writer that has too much free time from writeing his second best seller, but a normal everyday joe. who gives a fuck if he has bad grammer, hell we all do, especially us from the states, we dont speak or write in “proper english” why? because we aint fuckin english we are americans. but anyway the whole point of this article i believe (or at least what i got out of it) was a simple statement asking young metal heads to give the classic metal a chance, listen to it so you know where the roots of the new metal came from, sort of a history lesson if you will, and to please stop talking shit about how your metal kicks ass and old school metal sucks. none of it sucks, noone was saying that, what he is saying is realize that what you call metal is different than what metal was when it started. don’t be so narrow minded as to shrug everything else that is music off as crap before hearing it and limit yourself to one style.

  22. Scott says:

Thanks, Nismo. For a second those guys had me doubting my public school education credentials.

You know I could be a little bitch and play God and not even allow their shitty comments to get out of moderation and let them try to discredit me. But I feel everyone is entitled to their opinion. If they didn’t like what I say or this blog they can go somewhere else…but they just keep coming back. Oh well. Every page view counts, right? Keep clickin, Baby. Daddy needs to pay the bills!!

  23. brian says:

If I could give just one piece of advice, don’t head bang! Here’s why, in 1991, i was at a wonderful concert, It was Living Sacrifice playing their first 2 albums, while having soo much enjoyment, I headbanged as hard as i could. im 38 now and have neck problems, (laugh it up kids, everyone gets old) so please if your a young person, feeling invincible, remember my words.

  24. Gerard says:

A few of us are starting to show our age! Seriously though, I remember back in the 90s, people were excited about fusing metal with other types of music.

I thought we’d got beyond dumb debates about what constitutes ‘real’ metal. Seems the new generation are doomed to make the same mistakes!

  25. GhoulFather says:

…tis all be true,…Hell the music critiques in the early 60’s said the Beatles wouldn’t last…that Electric guitars was a fading fad …lol
    Even Rap transformed into Hip-hop with R & B,
The majority of the newer Country music acts are doing Southern Rock.

As for Head Banging for us Older guys…lol
its true that the neck can’t quite take the strain anymore. I found that out at a cpl years back at the Family Values show

  26. Daniel says:

Are there really people that listen to metal and only metal? I’ve never been like that in my life.

  27. Scott says:

there is people that claim they do. I guess they don’t want to look “Uncool”.

I have asked people before if they listen to pink floyd and they reply “I’ve never been into the whole drug thing” which I thought was the stupidist thing I have ever heard because pink floyd high or sober is a wonderful thing.

  28. Drew says:

I totally agree, I’m 21 (a far cry from your 32) but I still have friends who are totally into the metal illusion. That being that you MUST have long hair, wear black/leather/denim, you must not listen to anything but metal or else you are not a “true” metalhead, and all sorts of other ridiculous rules. Another new thing is labelling anything that’s not metal as “emo.” Now this is a genre of music I don’t like and it is certainly not metal . . . but when my friend decided that alice in chains was emo and thus trash I just about punched him. Love the genre, enjoy it, just don’t feel that you have to “become” it. If you do you’re just a massive tool. That’s all I have to say about that.

  29. Steve says:

My friend’s little brother (16 years old) tried to tell me that IRON MAIDEN wasn’t “true metal.” At that point I lost faith in young metalheads everywhere.

  30. Slayer says:

This is a pitiful article written by an angry little boy.

The reason I had to start off like that is because of the way he responded to “YOU MORON”, who rightly dismissed this blog, although not in a very good way.

FYI, Scott, what you tried to do was correct a typo. There’s a difference between accidentally hitting the space bar or mashing a key, and not knowing how to use basic spelling and grammar. While I agree with you about “the uniform”, you are wearing clothes in a metaphorical way when you post blogs like this. The same way you would wear a nice suit to a job interview, the way you present yourself is important online too. And the immature way you responded (not to mention the logical fallacies abound, including your choice of the word “hypocrite”) does kind of take the steam out of your article.

I also am ashamed (as an American with a Masters degree) by Nismo’s comment. The use of basic grammar does not denote your country of origin. Please don’t lump me into the “can’t read/spell” group of Americans… I payed attention in class (despite drinking and the experimentation) and take pride in my intelligence and ability to articulate a thought.

So why am I boring everyone with this crap? Because I’m a fucking metalhead through and through. I’ve been listening to Slayer for 20+ years, and it’s something I’ve never outgrown or got tired of. The genre has never bored me and has always remained fresh, despite the fact that I believe metal should sound or be based around certain foundations. Trivium, A7 and the new wave of American Metal is NOT what I like. Slayer, Iron Maiden, Sabbath, Morbid Angel… I don’t want to start name dropping, but what is and isn’t metal is very simple to me. Of course I cut my hair a long time ago, as career and adulthood demanded (sellout!), but I am still fanatical about my music.

That’s why I agree to a point with the grammar nazi. I’ve been talked shit to my whole life by strangers, parents, and girlfriends about metal… like it’s a phase, or that I couldn’t possibly pretend to be intelligent and cultured when I listed to such mindless, untalented musicians. So I tend to be defensive, and I don’t want it represented as anything but serious. This blog fits the stereotype of metalheads being uneducated, illiterate kids, and the way the blogger responded fits the bill. He does however make some great points. I couldn’t agree more with listening to other genres of music.

So to the young metalheads… it’s a great genre you’ve discovered! There’s TONS of amazing stuff out there, and you HAVE to go old school with it. Don’t let current trends and what the t-shirts at Hot Topic might lead you to believe. Metal is responsible for some of the most intelligent, emotional, and unforgettable songs ever.

  31. Scott says:

First off, I’m not a little boy. Second, there are two “Scott’s” here. The one that responded to “You Moron” and the one that writes the page, Me. I’ve been out of highschool for some time now and have no further education. Sometimes you tend to forget the basic stuff. When I type fast I tend to make all sorts of grammatical errors and the most simple of spelling mistakes. I scan through and try to fix what idiotic mistakes I make, and trust me I make some good ones. I don’t catch them all. Congrats on your masters degree, we’re all proud. I couldn’t afford to go to college so I busted my illiterate ass in the military for 13 years. While we all have our strong points, we all have our weak points. Or are you an exception? At least I didn’t type it as Ur

Now with that out of the way. I totally agree. We all get defensive when people talk shit about metal and by all means set them straight. Great advice at the end, but if your going to call someone an angry little boy try to refrain from using immature shit like an e-mail address of “Yourmom@aol.com”. Truly original.

  32. Stephanie says:

I love the fact that so many people my age (I’m 17, btw) know nothing of the metal roots they say they love. I’ve listened to Metal, Rock, and a lot of things since I was young. I’ll always be a metal head to the core, but I don’t relegate myself to that alone. I listen to what I like, including some bands that half the people I know have never heard of. I wish I could have seen the glory days, but I still pay tribute to those visionaries who sought to express themselves through the metal we all know and love.

  33. KevinC says:

Some really good advice and I agree with many of your points in the post. But I think the biggest piece of advice, which we’ve all heard over and over again is simply “Be yourself.” It’s so easy to choose what clothes you wear, what bands you listen to, and how you act, based solely on what you’re “supposed” to according to other people, but chances are, it’s not who you truly are. Don’t be afraid to be true to yourself, and show everyone the type of person you really are. It’s pointless to try and be someone you’re not because in the end, it doesn’t matter to anyone, and you’ve spent all this time acting fake. Also, being open-minded is really important if you’re a metalhead. By giving other types of music a chance, you might end up discovering something you like, and don’t go around bashing other people for listening to other songs. Which brings us to the point in which you should be cool to others. Life’s too short to hold grudges, and if I acted like a dick to everyone that pissed me off, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today. I have a bunch of friends who have really different interests than me, but by just talking to them nicely, they were able to see past the exterior, and realized I’m not just some angry kid who listens to metal.

    ATR

  34. Scott says:

right on, Kevin, You’ve made a lot of great points. Keep it up!

  35. GhoulFather says:

I think some Believe that being a “MetalHEAD” is ..that IS all you/us listen to…hence the term “Head”

    Myself going on 47, i Dress how I Want/Feel.
Lately it’s a Black Fedora, long black leather jacket w/ a big collar..
Black jeans..probably a black or White
R&R or Skull “T”..a wide leather wristband/watch w/ a cool chain link type mens bracelet on my lft arm and another leather wrist band and some kind of heavy bracelet on the rt arm.
Some people look at me and ask if im “Goth”…lol
    I say “no…I’m Damion”.
    the point is BE Yourself…
no mater what genre of music you like.

But most people , younger as well as older…
Do like to imitate those they like or follow,
    its only natural really .

No mater What age we are, we should appreciate and except one another Regardless if we look the part of the music we listen to.
Hell..I know Cowboys that listen to some HeavyMetal..
Ever see a guy with a cowboy hat
Bangin’ his head and throwing up the
    Devil horns sign..?..lmao

  36. serbian son says:

    Metal!!! Battle!! Metal!! Aaaa.

  37. Jake says:

    SCENE KIDS MUST DIE!

    :)

  38. Nick says:

Alright i’ve been into metal for a long time and i dont really dress it at all… but im starting to just buy band t-shirts and band wristbands… just cuz i dont know many ppl who listen to metal… and i hope someone will see the bands i listen to and look them up and hopefully enjoy the music the same way i did…
    something wrong with that?
I hate people who say wearing a band’s clothing and apparel is turning them into sell outs
    \m/

  39. Scott says:

I think you may have taken something out of context. By all means wear the metal band t-shirts. I have a few to include a Megadeth t-shirt I bought back in 93 that the sleeves have been ripped of and it’s faded 40 shades of Grey.

My point was that you don’t have to put on the proverbial uniform. I’m 32. I don’t know that many people that are in to metal either. You can not honestly tell who is who these days with all the posers (people that almost dress the look but know nothing of metal) and the people that are actually into metal. You don’t have to wear your hair long, or skinny pants, spikes and all that shit, that’s my point. You don’t have to look the look…just be able to talk the talk.

I just try to be a little conservative when I buy a metal band t-shirt because I also want to try to dress my age. Buy the shirts, buy the apparel, it doesn’t make the bands or yourself a sell out it shows your support and keeps the band able to record more and tour more.

  40. GhoulFather says:

    Scott..?.what.. my Metal-Head friend..
does your age have to do with how you feel?

I’m almost 47..and I wear what i want to wear.. regardless of my age.
I probably dress more metal or Even “Goth ”
as some has referred to me as.

I haven’t even been listening to any Metal much recently…but i wear what I feel……i guess.?

“Metal” is a Mental attitude i suppose,
but one Doesn’t have to try and Dress
like a Metal- Head…to have to like or enjoy
    Banging your head…LoL

    I think
    it’s really do to one’s sincerity to a genre….?

IdFk..?.I May be Older than most that have posted here,
But I Still listenin to new Music & genres
    all the time.
To me… its the Only True way to appreciate what YoU like with somekind of passion.

  41. Scott says:

All I’m saying is that I try to keep it tasteful when I buy a band t-shirt. I can be passionate about something without wearing it on my sleeve all the time.

  42. the ultimate bohab says:

i can understand what your trying to say, it is all to often that the youth try to separate themselves form the older generations, and in part that is what metal is, adapting itself to the times, only in the past two years have i come to love truly heavy metal, and appreciate the metal classics, but to say that any genre of music is not metal you have to look at where it came from and the heavy, crushing, cookie monster growling, syrine shreaking music of today came from your oldies like pink floyd, black sabbath, judas priest, ect. the bands that progressed from blues, folk, and acid rock, so you can’t dismiss those bands that aren’t the most insanely heavy and monsterific as the ones nowadays and to attack this aricle as some other young people have done just shows lack of respect and pure immatureity cussing and yelling at your computer screen is all that your going to accomplish, if we want metal to be long lived we have to realise our roots as Scott said, or we will let the music we devote ourselves to become a stupid corprate machiene, which is already happening, don’t get me wrong i am totally down with the incredibly dense bands that are out recently, despised icon, red chord, white chapel, ect. and although i am into that stuff now, when i was in grade school i was into stuff like the oldies i listed earlyer, if you want to call yourself metal know your roots for shure, and about listening to other music i can totally agree, its easy to get burnt out on the same cd after you listen to it twelve times in a row, we shold take the time to appreciate music in gerneral as an art form, or means of expression, thats all i have, keep your heads bangin and your fists’ clenched metal rules!

  43. the ultimate bohab says:

im 19 years old by the way so i guess i would consider myself in the younger generaiton, though i don’t think that makes a differince in the ability to listen to and appreciate good music period, i guess the only thing negative i have to say about the blog is that new metal, not nu-metal, is still decent even though it seems that all the bands are doing the same thing and being super heavy, its just getting crowded, but still desreves a listen or two, thanks

the way you people describe the metal look pretty much fits what look like except i wear mainly red or white not always black. young, yes, i have long hair, yes, but im me pure and simple if i wanna listen to fucking scooter i will! being raised by an ex-hells angel i was brought up listening to zz top, meatloaf and thin lizzy but my mother listened to such as the vengaboys and don mclean so i was brought up listening to mixed genres but fuck it i love metal if there was a flag to fly by god it would be fifty feet up by now but i dont always show the metal appearence i can look socially acceptable if i like and i usually do.
by the way nice quote of pantera

I am a young metalhead, only 15 years old, but I enjoy all classic metal. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, etc. I tend to avoid new bands since they usually suck. I do enjoy music out of metal, like Frank Zappa and some other bands i can’t think of right now. I used to not dress in a metalhead way, but it started by buying a couple maiden t-shirts and ended up with me wearing a battle vest with band patches on it and wearing a leather jacket. Well anyways rock on!! \m/

I’ve got a Motorhead hat and a few assorted shirts, most of them either purchased at shows/on sale. Most of you have me totally beat, oh well. Clothing was never a big deal to me anyway. Frankly, I don’t give half a damn what I wear…

  48. Scott says:

99% of my shirts are from shows, that’s all I really have though.

Well I’m 15 and love metal music in general. But apparently I’m not allowed to listen to other types of music without becoming “untr00″ or a poser but yeah, I like punk/hardcore, ska, country, some R&B (from the 50’s little richard etc) and some rap but then i get accused of being an emo. I don’t listen to emo music or even have hair for that matter which is typically what emo is. And at gigs I end up talking to the older generation of metalheads because we have more of a similar music taste (like krisiun, malevolent creation, saxon, witchfinder general, sabbath, slayer etc) than all the younger people who i go to the gigs with. But what im saying is that just constantly listening to metal forever can’t be done. You have to broaden your horizons in music, not to all these new “metal” bands like avenged sevenfold. And when these newer “metal” fans come up and say i don’t like metal because i dont worship trivium they have never even heard of mercyful fate. Most young metalheads are elitist twats but there are a few who have a varied taste in music. And these are the ones that don’t consider themselves metalheads, although we all wear our slayer and priest shirts.

  50. Jake says:

Pretty good advice, but part of being a metalhead is doing whatever you want.
Also, I like Avenged Sevenfold, but they aren’t technically metal.

My favorite bands are mostly metal, though, like Iron Maiden, Sabaton, Judas Priest, Slayer, Testament, Etc.
