Obituary: Back From Complete World Demise

September 21, 2007 by Scott

obituary1.jpgChange of plans… After consideration to he last two bands I had on my list I decided to scrap the Carcass and Dissection posts because there just wasn’t enough good I could say about both bands. So Obituary today and a Six Feed Under. Kinda fitting if you ask me. To finish out a full week of death metal, I’ll be  featuring a  guest post on Sunday.

Lets begin with yet another Florida based death metal band. Obituary was started back in the mid eighties as Executioner. Right before they released their first record slowly We Rot they changed the name to Obituary. Also considered to be one of the pioneering bands of death metal Obituaries vocalist John Tardy set himself apart from other death metal vocalists by using a much lower growling vocal style.

The first Obituary record I bought was a single of “Don’t Care” from the World Demise CD and I was immediately in love with this band. I ended up buying the complete CD shortly after and I can honestly say I love every track off of this CD. I started listening to this CD again today for the first time in years and realize how much I miss it. On a strange note I used to fall asleep to this CD when I was in the Marine Corps! From Don’t Care to Solid State to Boiling point, this CD kicks ass!

I bought The End Complete not too much longer after World Demise. The older and more muddier recording is still good classic Obituary just a slightly more generic recording sound. This being their third release in 1992 has sold more than 100,000 copies. Doesn’t sound like a lot but for a death metal band that rather impressive. Corrosive, Killing Time and The title track are what does it for me on this CD.

Back From The Dead was released in 1997 shortly before the band disbanded. Obituary are pretty consistent about staying true to form. The style doesn’t change much over the years with the exception of the last track on the record which if I’m not mistaken the rappers were called the bully boys…not sure, don’t care. Other than that this CD is just mediocre to me.

Obituary reformed in 2003 and released Frozen in Time in 2005. They just recently released Return of The Executioner in the past month which has got some some mixed reviews.
