Rating Your Favorites, Segment 1 | Megadeth

May 18, 2008 by Scott

peace sells Slow news day. Megadeth is one of my favorite bands. They were one of the first real metal bands that I became attached to. The first time I heard a Megadeth song I was just starting to get into metal and Megadeth just blew me away. I had heard the name before but never had a clue about their sound. I have most Megadeth albums. I rarely collect live cd’s so none of Megadeth live cd’s are being rated here. Also I only rated the cd’s I do have. I may talk some trash every now and then about Dave Mustaine, but the truth is I will always be a fan and you can not deny  how brilliant of a songwriter and musician he is.

Here they are from most favorite to least favorite.

  1. Peace Sells..But Who’s Buying- From the opening bass line of the title track I was hooked. Good Mourning / Black Friday, The Conjuring, Wake Up Dead. Unbelievable!
  2. So Far So Good…So What -Set The World Afire, Mary Jane, In My Darkest Hour, Liar, A Sex Pistols cover…who could ask for anything more.
  3. Rust In Peace – Enter Marty Friedman and a slew of remarkable tunes.
  4. Killing Is My Business – Looking Down The Cross, Mechanix, Riff Madness…with poor quality sound engineering…still kills!
  5. Countdown To Extinction – Again from the first tearing riffs of Symphony Of Destruction I was hooked on this.
  6. Youthanasia – Another great album with Marty and Nick…but the end of an era.
  7. United Abominations – Megadeth’s comeback. Although it’s musically great it’s still far from their hay-day, but much better than everything between Youthanasia and itself
  8. Cryptic Writing – I don’t know what the hell happened with this one but it only had a few good songs and had just a weird vibe to it.
  9. The System Has Failed – I was stoked when I heard this was coming out and Chris Poland was going to be playing on it. It had a cool cover and Can’t Die Dead Enough was not a bad single…but it all fell short. Dave uses the excuse that it was the last record under contract with Capitol but I hate excuses for crappy work. No matter how much I tried and tried I could not get into it.

Risk and The World Needs A Hero were not rated. I could never bring myself to buy Risk and heard enough of The World Needs A Hero to know not to buy that either.

  1. Martin says:

First time i ever listen to Megadeth was probably in the mid 80’s but, when i really paid them more attention was by 92 or 93 but never had any of the albums i think Megadeth it’s one of the most creative bands ever and Dave’s real cool, original style of playing guitar. And Metallica, Megadeth and Pantera were some of bands that kind of changed this metal image of the other 80’s bands, even that they started on the same kind of style, but i still like some of those hair bands from the 80’s. Not forgetting Iron Maiden.
