Reviews The Short And Simple Way

March 11, 2009 by Scott

There are times when I get CDs in the mail to review and I try to give them a good listen. Sometimes it clicks right away and sometimes it takes time. Sometimes there is a lot I can say in praise of the band and sometimes not so much. What follows is 4 cds that have come in my mailbox that I’ve been sitting on and haven’t had too much ambition to review.

Journal: Casualties Of War. The best I could explain this band is “Screaming Mathcore with a vengeance”. The only thing that kind of throws me off slightly is the vocals, but that’s what makes this band fall in to that “core”-tegory. There is melody on this cd that is very enjoyable. They are currently working on a new album and I think they are a band that may hit the mainstream in the future.

Corral: Outlaw Ep. Corral are an Irish metal band that kind of sound like Sheer Terror and Pantera fused together. Traditionally metal sounding with that groove that Pantera had. Outlaw is a short and quick demonstration of the bands potential, but I don’t know if they’ll see a tour outside of Europe anytime soon, only because their sound isn’t entirely unique. Good, but not unique enough to get the attention of any major label.

SOS: Adult Situations. SOS is kind of like NYC hardcore punk and rock. Nothing too special in my opinion. 12 tracks, each one not really sound much different from the last. I imagine they keep the crowd moving in the bars.

Seizure Crypt: Under The Gun. NY Hardcore with some spaghetti western sounds in there here and there. Very raw production that doesn’t sound good at all but I think that’s what they wanted…or had to deal with. Sounds like they’re having fun but I’m not feeling it even as much as I dig some of the bands from the NYHC scene. Probably a local favorite around the NYC scene.
