Seventh Void Sign To Big Vin Records
March 12, 2009 by Scott
You know, some times I have a tough time describing a bands sound. Unless it’s totally obvious, there are times where you just can’t nail it down. Now…what if someone explained the sound of a bad as; “somewhere between SOUNDGARDEN meets BLACK SABBATH meets a little AUDIOSLAVE, with some TYPE O thrown in there“? Makes you kind of scratch your head, right? I mean, if it wasn’t for the Type O and Black Sabbath in that comment I would have zero interest in another band sounding like SG and AS.
That’s how Vinnie Paul describes his newest acquisition to his record label, Big Vin Records. Here is exactly what the press release says:
SEVENTH VOID, the new band formed by TYPE O NEGATIVE guitarist Kenny Hickey and drummer Johnny Kelly, will release its debut album on April 21 via Big Vin Records, the label formed by HELLYEAH/ex-PANTERA drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott. “It’s an amazing record,” Vinnie recently said. “I mixed the whole thing for the guys. It goes somewhere between SOUNDGARDEN meets BLACK SABBATH meets a little AUDIOSLAVE, with some TYPE O thrown in there. It’s really nice, dark, sludgy… Kenny’s vocals are great.” Rounded out by bassist Hank Hell (INHUMAN) and guitarist Matt Brown (ex-SUPERMASSIV), SEVENTH VOID continues TYPE O’s tradition of slow, heavy riffs and existential lyrics, but with a slightly sludgier, “stonier” flavor.
Ok, that is a strange explanation of a band’s sound, but when you listen to their song on Myspace, Heaven Is Gone, you can actually almost hear those bands in the mix and it’s not all that bad. I’m not sure if I’d buy the album off of that one song alone, though. I’d have to hear much more or maybe see them live before making any kind of call here. Here is a live video from them at the Starland Ballroom.

I completely agree, but I think I am going to give them a chance. Although I could do without the Audioslave influence. Hopefully it knocks my dick in the dirt.
Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t mean to imply anything negativity about the band. I just felt that that was a weird mix of bands when you’re trying to describe a band. I’m definitely up for hearing more and even though I wasn’t very in to Hell Yeah!, I trust “Big Vin’s” judgment.
Kenny is awesome!
