In an interview with Rolling Stone, Tyler states that he was just “in the zone” when he fell. Personally, I think he was trying to stage dive, and forgot his age for a moment.

On his health:

“I’ve been better. I’ve got my arm in a sling [from a broken shoulder]. I’m on all the drugs I’m not supposed to be on. But I’m dealing with the pain pretty good.”

On his failed stage dive:

“I don’t really know. There was a torrential downpour and the guys [at the campground] said, “Look, it’s still slippery.” I watched myself on YouTube, and it could have been my knee buckling or any ankle. The last thing I remember before I hit the ground was people grabbing for me, but they couldn’t reach me because of the barricade. At any other Aerosmith show I probably would’ve been caught and thrown back onto the stage — naked and without jewelry [laughs]. I stood up and couldn’t raise my arm and knew I’d broken something.”

On the rumors of strife within the band:

“Someone is leaking stuff, pretending to know, and you know, I don’t even care. Has the band done things to me where I’ve wanted to quit? Positively. But I’ve stuck in there for the sake of a few sounds we got. I respect the power this band has in and of itself regardless of who says what.”

The radio stations at that time didn’t play any metal in my area at that time and it wasn’t until a few years later that I got into it. Until then the best things in my very small cassette tape collection was a few Aerosmith tapes which were some good ones back then) and a few others that I don’t quite recall.

One band I was fond of back then was White Lion…yeah I said it. Pride had just come out and I was about 11 years old and I really dug the songs Wait and When The Children Cry. Mainly the two songs they played on the radio. The problem with White Lion back then and now is that they were stuck to those singles and on every album there was a good handful of songs that were always pretty good. Most songs were about the typical things that 80’s songs were about. Sex, love and good times. A lot of people back then would have called them a Heavy Metal band. Hard rock maybe, but I would never call them metal. Lady Of The Valley was one of the hits on that record as well. Big Game was a bit different as they tried to mix some political messages in there a little bit and also had Broken Home, A song about an abusive father, which is actually a really good song. The cover of Golden Earring’s Radar Love still stands out. Their third record with Atlantic Records, Mane Attraction, allowed them creative control but was not as well received as the previous two records. Warsong, one of my favorites on this record was a strong political song which was in light of the gulf war at the time. Till Death Do Us Part was a cool sappy ballad and Blue Monday is a great instrumental tribute to the late Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Today Mike Tramp, the lead singer of White Lion has kept the band going without any of the original members. One thing I will say about this band is that Vito Bratta was a great guitarist and do to a wrist injury that still causes him some pain he doesn’t manage to play much guitar anymore. James Lamenzo has played with various great artists since his departure from White Lion and currently plays for Megadeth (Hell Yeah!). Greg D’angelo works out of his home and his most recent musical ventures were with Britney Fox 2007 summer tour where he filled in a bit.

White Lion have not been a favorite of mine in about 20 years but every now and then I’ll still listen to a few songs. Don’t be afraid to embrace the bands of your past in fear of people doubting your “Metalness”, because everyone has that band in the back of their mind they they used to listen to. Unfortunate for me, metal was not a big hit in small upstate NY hicktowns. Hell, half the time we were just happy to hear a good radio station that didn’t play country music or Jesus preaching.

I was 7 or 8 years old when this came out and I wish I could say I have been listening to it since then…but it wasn’t until the early 90’s when my musical taste took a turn for the best. From days of listening to Aerosmith, AC/DC, Whitesnake and White Lion changing to Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer and Pantera. Don’t get me wrong, I still dig that old music but I love the Heavy Metal. I really didn’t get into Metallica until after I got into Megadeth.

After I started to hear more metal on upstate NY’s WKLL 94.9 K-rock, it all started to come together for me. Shortly after I discovered this, this thing that everyone always told me was “The Devil’s Music“, I wanted more. it was like crack for your ear drums. When I first bought Kill ‘Em All (or did I shop lift it from Fay’s Drugs, I can’t remember) it blew me away. It was already almost 9 years old but it was the best thing I had ever heard. Master Of Puppets Followed and Ride The Lightening shortly thereafter. The heavy bass drum and snappy snare in …And Justice For All had my friend Doug and I, hauling ass down the road in my 87 Chevy Cavalier at unsafe speeds screaming “Dear Mother, Dear Father. What Is This Hell You Have put Me Through…”. Those were the days.

But today it all came back. The riffs, the ever so familiar Hetfield growls, the kick ass ripping solos, the vocal reverb that was every so popular back then. It was an amazing flashback. I’m not going to ruin this moment by mentioning the late 90’s because that would just absolutely spoil my metal high. Kill ‘Em All. What better title, what better album art. So simple yet so damn amazingly brilliant. Now I know I haven’t said anything here that hasn’t been said before by another metal fan but I just had to share my moment of metal flashback ecstasy. If you haven’t listened to this album in awhile, break it out, blow the dust off of it and give it a listen. And if you have it on vinyl, more power to you and I hope your listening to it in that form. KILL ‘EM ALL!!!!!
