You may have noticed that not a whole lot was going on here at Metal Martyr yesterday. There was good reason. I went to see The Sword last night in Raleigh, NC. Let me tell you, if your a fan of The Sword and you have not went to a live show yet, GET THERE!

Opening up the show was a band from Philadelphia, Pa called Stinking Lizaveta. They were a three piece band that did mostly instrumental stuff with a dude in his 40’s with a scullet with a little patch in the middle playing guitar and singing a little bit, a woman drummer another guy playing an electric upright Bass guitar. They had a funky garage band sound that was really cool I didn’t get to hear much of them as I was late.

Next up was Torche. A band with members out of Miami and Georgia. They were LOUD! I think they’re sound was all fucked up because you could not hear the vocals and the bass was overwhelming everything…except the drums. The drummer, Rick Smith was beating the living shit outta those skins. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has to change skins every other show. Now they didn’t sound all that good last night but I bought a cd/vinyl on the way out and it sounds great. I blame their sound man for a shitty set up. Anyway they kind of have southern sludge sound to it. Check out their myspace

Now, all bullshit aside. The Sword came on quick and got their stuff set up and just started rockin the place and sounding great. You know those bands that sound just as well live as a studio recording? The Sword is one of those bands. The crowd was diggin every song and every now and then between songs some chum would yell “Freya“, but that’s expected. They did play it at the end and the crowd went ape-shit. These guys put on an awesome live show. Thanks to Sneak Attack Media for getting me there. Check out the pictures below.

Ok, So i did a review, posted a video and held a contest for the band The Sword and their cd Age Of Winters. I asked Dale, the winner of the CD what he thought of the CD and to do a guest review for me. This is what he wrote:

Hello my name is Dale Schmucker. I am here to do a review of the band The Sword and their cd, Age Of Winters. This is a 9 track 43 min cd. 1st let me say this is my 1st written review ever. I don’t work for any radio station or music mag. I just enjoy music in general.

A week ago I received The Sword cd Age Of Winters. Honestly I have never heard of them, but when I put the cd in I was pleasantly surprised. They are a mix between old Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The 1st track is a strong instrumental guitar riff called Celestial Crown. This woke my ass up. Then It goes into Barael’s Blade. This song will kick you in the head. The entire cd is heavy guitar driven’. Then song #8 March of the Gol is a 8 part instrumental. This song is them sitting around just jammin. I think you will enjoy this song.

The only disappointing thing about this cd is the vocals. The vocals are weak and sometimes even hard to hear. It sound like he is trying to sing under water. Harmonies would also help on some of the songs.

Over all If you like old Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin you will enjoy this cd. I would give this cd a 4 out of 5. Work on the vocals and this would be a classic album!!!

-Dale Schmucker

While Dale listed a few songs, my favorites as it seems are most peoples, are Freya and iron Swan. I like this band, Keep it simple, keep it metal. Thanks, Dale for the review and I’m glad your enjoying The Sword.

I wanted to do more on this band, like an interview, but their PR rep has yet to get back to me.

The person at the end of the week with the most correct answers wins the cd. At that point I will officially announce the winner, contact them to get their mailing address and send them their prize. Look for the first question tomorrow morning.

I may even throw in a trick/ multiple choice question in there that you may even have to elaborate on…enjoy~

I give you “The Sword“. Thats my take on them. If you don’t know who The Sword is then your not alone. I first heard them on Guitar Hero II and quickly became a fan. Perhaps I’m behind on things as usual but what else is new. This is what Wikipidia has to say about The Sword:

2003 in Austin, Texas by JD Cronise. Cronise, a guitarist and vocalist who had played with Those Peabody’s, searched out a number of musicians before finally assembling the band completely with rhythm guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie and drummer Trivett Wingo.

In support of their first album, they toured the United States with the likes of …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead, Lacuna Coil and In Flames; Europe with Clutch and Nebula; and Japan with Lamb of God. They contributed the song “Under the Boughs” to the Invaders compilation also on Kemado Records. A cover of their song “Freya” from Age of Winters appears on Guitar Hero II. Their lyrics often deal with Norse mythology. Currently, the band is writing their follow up for “Age of Winters” which is due to be released in the spring of 2008. The band recently stated on their MySpace page that they will be releasing a split 12″ with Witchcraft in the fall of 2007 which will contain two unreleased tracks from each band.

The C.D. I bought yesterday is The Age Of Winters. The sound is dirty, simple heavy metal. Its not the greatest mix in the recording world but it does the job. They don’t try to fancy things up with all sorts of ambient sounds and shit. The sword does for Metal what Jet (I despise these guys) does for rock. Keeps it simple while keeping it interesting. The only complaint I have is the same as all the others I see and that is the vocals. The vocals are too muddy. Hard to hear but understandable.

I ordered this C.D. about two weeks ago when I ordered Dale’s (the fantasy band contest winners) C.D.. It took awhile to get here and Dale, if you have not got your CD yet, hang in there, man. Anyway, long story short, I got tired of waiting and bought the CD at FYE. Today the CD came in the mail. Had I waited one more day I would have to think of something else to give away in the next contest. I will post the next contest this week sometime.
