Metal titans Arch Enemy have just released The Root Of All Evil, a stunning collection of re-recorded material from the band’s first three albums, revitalized and reenergized by their current line-up. The album achieved chart entries in Germany (#84), Sweden (#69) and Japan (#7 in the international artist charts, #21 in the combined charts).

A live clip of the song “Dark Insanity” (originally featured on the Tyrants Of The Rising Sun – Live In Japan DVD), which is one of the many reworked tracks on this album, is available below:

Right now, the band is touring through Asia and mastermind Michael Amott has posted the following report:

“We’re on a tour of Asia, just about to hit the stage here in Manila, Philippines! A couple of days ago we played the LOUD PARK 09 festival at the giant Makahuri Messe Hall in Tokyo, Japan! I had a great time on stage at the LOUD PARK Festival as usual, the conditions are extremely professional and there is really nothing you can complain about – which is of course the level of greatness we have come to expect when we play in Japan!

We played a special setlist consisting of quite a few songs from our recently released “The Root Of All Evil” CD. Thank you to everyone who made noise for us, screamed, shouted, fistbanged, moshed – whatever you did, it was great and we felt your energy up there on the stage!”

Arch Enemy has been relentlessly touring through the course of 2009 and have just confirmed a huge North American headlining run in early 2010 with Exodus, Arsis and Mutiny Within.

MM: You have quite a resume as a guitar player with bands such as Arch Enemy, Tiamat, Human Clay, Krux and now Opeth.

FA: I never played in Human Clay, that’s actually wrong. I think I may have played a guitar solo on one of their albums as a guest solo, but I was never in their band.

FA: Exactly. Maybe they put that in there because I may be credited in one of their albums for a solo.

FA: Yeah, I did think about that because you have the fact that they’re brothers and Chris was there from the beginning, but when I joined Mike Amott told me that he (Chris) wasn’t coming back, so I was like the permanent member. But he was away from the band for those two years and maybe he realized it wasn’t so fun, maybe he realized that he wanted to be back in the band so.
FA: we’re right at the end of a six week US tour.

MM: Was there any time for you to catch the Carcass reunion?

FA: yeah last summer we played a bunch of European festivals together and we actually played a couple of gigs with Carcass, so we actually went out in the crowd and watched them, in Greece actually. It was really good.

MM: What’s the major difference between playing with Opeth and playing in Arch Enemy?

FA: Playing in Arch Enemy was good for me because there’s a lot of thrashy, faster type of riffing. It was more…high adrenaline all the time in the live sets. And the Opeth song are more complex, longer songs and more diverse type of guitar playing. In Arch Enemy its more of a metal thing. A lot of solos in Arch Enemy. I don’t play as much solos in Opeth but I do play some

MM: Do you play any of the melodic acoustic parts?

FA: Oh yeah, I play like melody solos and acoustic parts and everything. That’s another difference with Arch Enemy because the Opeth type of rhythm guitar playing that Mikael does, the way he puts his riffs together is very odd, if you say?

MM: So he has his own unique style.

FA: Yeah, I think and it makes the gig even more fun to play and also there are a lot of acoustic parts with finger style picking that I put a lot of time in to. So it’s very cool and very different. It took me a couple of months to adjust to the sound but I was a big Opeth fan before so it made it east because I got to play with one of my favorite bands.

MM: was it difficult to learn some of the back catalog?

FA: Yeah, not so hard but more challenging but I like challenges which hopefully drives me to better guitar playing. In the beginning I was like ‘Oh shit, there’s so much material I have to learn’ but I took one riff at a time, one song at a time and Mikael showed me the riffs so that made it easier too.

MM: Any plans in the future for Krux?

FA: Yeah, I still play with Krux. It’s the only band I play with apart from Opeth, which is my main priority. Leif who is the founder of Krux, Leif Edling (Krux Bass player) from Candlemass, he’s quite busy with Candlemass and the other guys have families. They used to be in Entombed, the drummer (Peter Stjärnvind) , the rhythm guitar player used to play bass in Entombed…

MM: Jorgen

FA: Yeah, Jorgen Sanstrom

MM: he used to also play in Grave

FA: Exactly, he used to sing in Grave.

MM: I liked Grave better when he was singing, but that’s just my personal preference.

FA: He’s cool, he has some other bands now and Peter, the drummer has Nifelheim. So everyone in Krux is busy with other bands but we will do a new record, it’s planned for the end of next year.

MM: How many tours have you been through North America?

FA: This is the fifth. Three times with Arch Enemy and this is the second time with Opeth.

MM: What’s the best thing about touring North America.

FA: I like it. I like also being on the bus and not having to go in to hotels with your bags and stuff all the time. It’s cool to always have a place to stay. It’s different, it’s a cool variation going to the east coast and the west coast…

MM: You catch it at the right time you get all four seasons. Does that ever become a problem going from hot to cold and maybe getting sick with different climates?

FA: I got a cold for about a week but it’s bound to happen with everyone on a tour bus. It kind of gets passed around.

MM: What’s maybe the worse thing about touring North America?

FA: Some venues don’t have showers, but we can deal with that and sometimes you’re just dirty for a few days. Another problem is that you really don’t get to see that much. I never got to see the grand canyon and you miss out on a lot of stuff. It’s not like being a tourist.

MM: Are you still playing ESP guitars?

FA: I played ESP when I was with Arch Enemy, but I went over to PRS after I joined Opeth. I still have a couple of ESP’s that I might play on the road but now I mainly play a single cut PRS guitar. They’re really good sounding guitars and they stay in tune.

MM: What are some of your favored guitars?

FA: I used to play a Les Paul custom but I don’t bring that out on the road anymore. In the late 90’s I played some Floyd Rose style guitars…

MM: something with a nice fast neck?

FA: I always like to fast guitar but I also like a guitar that makes you fight for the tone a little bit

MM: That’s all I have for you. What time do you guys go on?

FA: 10:00 I think. It’s like a two hour set.

MM: Wow. Well thanks again and I’ll see you out there.

FA: Thanks. Take care.

So there you have it. I also kind of tried to get some inside info on the reason Nachmystium got booted from the tour, but Fredrik is a professional dude and didn’t think he should talk about that and he said they’re a good bunch of guys and wishes them well.

“It is a great reward to make studio songs come alive – and they truly take another shape and form on stage! They turn from being a ‘rocking tune’ into beasts, full of emotions. The songs suddenly have their own heart beat and their blood runs through thousands of people in the audience – making them a crucial part of the music! Guitarist Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY) commented on what their recent touring experience was like:

"What a tour! So many sold-out shows and fantastic, bordering on fanatical response from the fans everywhere we went! I’d like to thank the fans in the US/CANADA/MEXICO for waiting patiently and remaining fans all these years – and for coming out in such big numbers on the tour.
For me personally it’s been quite emotional playing THOSE songs with THOSE guys again – really cool and almost too much fun. Playing the festivals in Europe over the summer was amazing, but I have to admit that I prefer being on tour playing every night in clubs – that’s when you get tight as a band and become a solid unit.

Highlights? Without lying I’d have say that every night was special, it was just that kind of tour for me – but the NYC show at the sold-out Nokia Theatre was exceptionally killer, and Ken Owen (ex-CARCASS drummer) flew out for that one so the vibe was just incredible! That was the kind of night when you wish that the cameras were rolling.”

Regarding the other bands on the tour and the people behind the scenes who made it all happen the guitarist continued:

“The other bands on the bill were all excellent – SUFFOCATION, 1349, ABORTED and ROTTEN SOUND – they all killed it, I’m very happy that they could be a part of the ‘Exhumed To Consume’ tour!

Special thanks to all the cool people that made the tour happen the way it did; Ash at TKO booking, Gerardo and his awesome Nuclear Blast team, and Albert Mudrian at DECIBEL magazine. Thanks for making the tour a special one!

I’d also like to thank my endorsers Dean Guitars, Randall Amps and Digitech effects for their friendship and supplying the ‘tools of the trade’ that I need to get the job done!

Now we are en route to Australia/New Zealand and Japan, KEEP ON ROTTING!”

Arch Enemy/Carcass guitarist Mike Amott has just signed with Dean Guitars. I saw him playing a Michael Schenker model V during the tour but I thought that perhaps it was just something he was fond of because I have heard that he’s a Schenker fan. I always liked his ESP Ninja but didn’t care for that Washburn model because it just looked to space-age weird. I’ll be eager to see what is signature model will look like, which will be unveiled at NAMM 2009.

Dean guitars is proud to announce that guitarist extraodinaire Michael Amott of Arch Enemy and Carcass has signed on with Dean guitars. Dean CEO Elliott Rubinson states “I have been a fan of Michael for some time and we are extremely excited that he has decided to make Dean guitars his home. Michael Amott is a very well respected guitarist worldwide and we look forward to working very closely with him to design his dream guitar.

“I contacted Dean guitars said Amott as I was looking for the right guitar company and I knew that if people like Michael Schenker, Dave Mustaine, Dimebag and Leslie West have made Dean their home that I needed to check it out. They sent me two V’s to check out and I immediately fell in love with them. I am sure my new signature guitar will meet all of my demands as well as the needs of my fans around the globe.

I’ve been contemplating buying this CD for awhile now but I haven’t liked Angela Gassow’s voice in the past, but it’s hard not to listen to when the rest of the music is just filled with pure ass-kickery!

This news comes just a day after I bought Rise Of The Tyrant. I’ve been contemplating buying this CD for awhile now but I haven’t liked Angela Gassow’s voice in the past, but it’s hard not to listen to when the rest of the music is just filled with pure ass-kickery! Besides that fact that I have started like a lot of vocal styles that I haven’t in the past and that’s opening up a lot of different things in my musical taste for metal. Check out what Mike Amott had to say about the re-recordings to BW&BK writer Martin Popoff:

“We actually tracked drums already for a new record, which is… it’s not a brand-new album in that sense, but we had another singer on the first three albums, before Angela joined. And we’ve basically taken 12 songs from that era of the band, from those three records, and we kind of redo those, with Angela and Sharlee, everybody, the current band. Daniel, for instance, didn’t play drums on the second album. So it’s just playing those songs the way we play them now and put them out next year. It’s basically songs that we would like to start playing live again, you know, from the first three records.

That sounds cool. I can’t wait to hear what the outcome of the old/new recordings. I’m sure a lot of hardcore older Arch Enemy fans are probably pissin’ their pants right now in disgust, but they don’t have to buy it. It’s also not such an abomination as KISS Re-recording their classics with new members because those are songs that you just don’t touch. Besides,we all know that KISS is just doing it for the cash anyway. Arch Enemy’s songs are perhaps something that they wanted to improve some things on with better production and maybe better label support.

The following is re-posted from Nuclear Blast Newsletter. I highly doubt if The Carcass Reunion show will come down my way, but if they do I’m sure to make my way to see them. Also a shame about Ken Owen (See Below). I hope he can make a full recovery just for the sake of himself.

As recently leaked, UK Death/Grind/Melo-death metal legends, CARCASS, will be performing at the Nokia Theatre in New York City on September 6, 2008. The show will also include 3 soon to be announced special guests in addition to NECROPHAGIST and ABORTED. Always a cut up and never afraid not to mince his words, vocalist/bassist Jeff Walker commented on what will be the first of many more U.S. performances:

“Well we waited and waited (just to make you sweat), but it doesn’t look like Bush and Blair’s phony war has any end in sight. The dollar ain’t gonna get any stronger, gas ain’t gonna get any cheaper, so it’s now or never! I guess you ex-colonists need cheering up and the only thing we can think of is some old school grind and death metal (laughs)! Joking aside, we KNOW damn well we HAVE to play the U.S. if only to either shut you all up or completely disappoint you and shatter your illusions about this band! Either way it’s gonna be a ‘blast’ as you say out there. We’re looking to recreate the road trip of the Summer of ‘90 with DEATH which was one of the best times of our lives (Christ I sound old)! To quote Herchell Gordon Lewis as on Necroticism ‘PREPARE TO DIE’!”

Tickets go on sale on Friday, July 11 at Noon (http://www.nokiatheatrenyc.com/showdetail.php?id=5965).
More U.S. shows will be announced shortly.

In February of 1999, CARCASS drummer Ken Owen suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage, leaving him in a coma for over 10 months. As a result, he is not taking part in CARCASS’ current reunion run (ARCH ENEMY skinsman Daniel Erlandsson is filling in), but will reportedly be traveling with the band whenever possible and making brief appearances at select shows.

CARCASS‘ reunion lineup:
Bill Steer (FIREBIRD) – Vocals, Guitar
Jeff Walker (BRUJERIA) – Vocals, Bass
Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY) – Guitar
Daniel Erlandsson (ARCH ENEMY) – Drums
