All That Remains Lead Guitarist, Oli Herbert Is Releasing Instructional DVD’s ON Rockhouse. About a year and a half ago, maybe more, I got tired of hearing the name All That Remains. I saw it in magazines and on the web and I finally told myself that I had to find out what all the hype was. I think the first cd I bought was Behind Silence And Solitude. It was heavy and I liked it but it lacked something. The fall Of Ideals was the newest album so I picked that one up next. I loved it. The guitar work and solos floored me and I liked Phil’s voice. Ask anyone that’s been visiting for over a year and they’ll tell you that I used to post quite a bit on ATR. This Darkened Heart remains my favorite though I don’t listen to them much anymore. Oli Herbert’s guitar work is catchy and simplistic on his rhythms most of the time but when he rips in to a solo you can hear a lot of classical influence and the solos sound great and always fit the song well.

Rock House, sells a load of different instructional DVD with various artists. One of the new instructional sets is with Oli Herbert.

Metal Guitar Heavy Rhythms, Leads & Harmonies Levels 1 & 2 are jam-packed with the fundamental techniques that have propelled Oli into one of today’s most influential guitar players. In Level 1 Oli gives aspiring Metal guitarists insight into song writing and lead playing. He reveals the chords, inversions and voicing’s he uses to create rhythm progressions and write songs. Expanding on the techniques developed in Level 1, Level 2 explores Hungarian minor scales, scale runs and patterns, chromatic passing tone technique and many complete leads shown note by note. Oli shows students advanced lead guitar techniques and how to write a two-part harmony guitar section heard in many of his Metal compositions. Each level includes backing tracks from original All That Remains recordings to put users at the center of the band’s ground breaking sound.

The DVDs’s come iPod ready, with 32 page lesson booklet and backing tracks to play long to. You can pick up the DVD’s individually or together for a slight discount. There are other packs that includes the DVDs, the Overcome CD and some stickers. You can preorder it now but I don’t see a release date.

The tour manager had some issues with her Mac-book that had to be resolved and it through off my interviews. I didn’t get to interview Phil Labonte as planned but I did get to speak to Mike Martin and Oli Herbert, which was cool too. I did shoot about 200 pictures of the band during the first 3 songs. I was shooting a lot because we were not aloud to use flash so I had to get the settings on my DLSR just right and shoot as much as I could because you never know how the lighting is going to turn out and you only have the first 3 songs to get shots beyond the barrier. Here are a few shots that I got. I’ll be transcribing the interviews in the next few days. Trivium pictures will come later or tomorrow. More pictures after the fold…

All That Remains played a lot of the classic/typical songs from This Darkened Heart and The Fall Of Ideals as well as about 4 or 5 from Overcome. Any doubts about how the new songs will sound live can be put to rest. They all sounded great, even though I kind of think that they used a chorus type effect or someone doing backing vocals on the clean parts, but I could be wrong. I had a copy of Overcome that I was hoping to get signed by Phil, but that fell through when the interview fell through and I didn’t think to get it signed by Oli and Mike. I’ll still be giving that away though. Until then, enjoy the pictures.

ALL THAT REMAINS’ NEW ALBUM “OVERCOME” DUE
OUT LATE SUMMER

WARPED TOUR NORTH AMERICAN DATES BEGIN IN LATE JULY

(New York, NY) – Road warriors All That Remains have been holed up in a studio for the past month recording their fourth release. The new album, entitled OVERCOME, is set for a late summer release and is being produced by Jason Suecof (Trivium, Chimaira, Black Dahlia Murder). ATR frontman Phil Labonte commented, “I’m really excited about this disc. It’s a pretty different sound than our last one. It’s shaping up to have a more biting tone. It’s got tons of double bass, like twenty guitar solos and more hooks. It’s a much darker record than THE FALL OF IDEALS and it’s gonna reshape what people think when they think of All That Remains.” Immediately following the completion of the album, All That Remains will join the Warped tour in progress for a three-week North American run. This will be the band’s first Warped tour. (Please see below for dates.)

Released in July, 2006, All That Remains’ last studio release, THE FALL OF IDEALS, has sold over 175,000 units to date.

Metal bible Kerrang said the album, “bears all the hallmarks of a classic…the musicianship is stunning… ruthlessly precise and powerful”, while Metal Hammer stated, “Track after track, the band leave you breathless…”

Since All That Remains’ first album was released in 2002, the band has grown in leaps and bounds in every arena. They’ve gone from playing opening slots to headlining and selling out their own tours and playing major rock festivals domestically and abroad – Ozzfest, Sounds of the Underground, Wacken: Open Air. The first single from THE FALL OF IDEALS, “This Calling” could be heard all over the country on hard rock stations and the corresponding video could be seen on MTV and Fuse. The song also appeared in the major motion picture, “Saw 3.” “Six,” another track from the album is featured in the hit video game, “Guitar Hero 2.

“We’re in Florida workin on a new RECORD!!!” Labonte says. “The guys got here on Wednesday and we started pre-production. It didn’t take long for the stuff to come together. Jason is a great producer and he has had some really great ideas that we tried out and all most every time they worked out wonderfully.

“It’s lookin’ like it’s gonna be 11 new songs. We have a cover in the works but I’m not gonna let the cat out of the bag yet. Don’t worry, it’s a pretty sweet song and it’s not some song from the 80’s like every other band does. It’s a great song that never really got the attention it deserved.

“So yeah, 11 new ATR originals. Lots of em are kinda short. Which I like cause I have ADD so bad it’s crazy. Some stuff is very different from anything we’ve done before. That makes me pretty happy. We don’t wanna be the band that puts out the same disc two or three times in a row. There’s some pretty rockin stuff, some heavy stuff, LOTS of solos, and LOTS and LOTS of double bass. We like to keep Jason [Costa, drums] feeling like he’s more of a marathon runner than playing the drums. So yeah, the long and the short of it: the disc is coming together. Late August or early September it should be in stores n on iTunes.

Get into it!”

According to All That Remains’ Frontman Phil Labonte’s personal Myspace.com blog, Phil has flow down to Florida where the band will be starting preproduction on the new record at Audio Hammer Studios this thursday.

We have 10 songs done, probly gonna have more on the disc. There are a few that are very similar to stuff on TFOI but there are a few that we really took a different approach to. Most of the songs are pretty short, I have ADD. Sue me. Oli had TONS of material and I had a couple things kickin around. Once we got together and started pounding stuff out things move pretty quickly. We don’t go to Audio Hammer Studios in sunny Florida to record for a week n a half so we may have 12 or so. They may not all make it on the disc but… Yeah, so we are workin hard. NO RELEASE DATE YET. Late August or Early September. Oh yeah, I did say Audio Hammer so that means Jason Suecof will be doing the next ATR disc. We’re really pumped to be working with Jason. I’ve known him since like 97 or 96 when I was in Shad. He’s a great guy and he’s a great producer so we can’t wait to see what he’s gonna do to the songs we are bangin around with.

We don’t have a name for it and I’m not sure the release date yet but the songs have come together pretty nicely. I’m excited. We’ve never worked with Jason and I can’t wait to see what he’s gonna do to our sound. It’ll be ATR, but we are trying a few different things cause that’s how we roll. I mean, TFOI was quite a bit different than TDH and TDH was night and day different that BSAS. So the new one will have a character and flavor all it’s own. Or at least that’s what we are hoping.

I got my birthday present last Friday. A bit early but who’s counting days. I debated buying the iPod Nano because I like the size but I didn’t like the size of the memory. 8 gigs just didn’t quite seem enough and I figured for another 50 bucks why not get the iPod Classic 80 gb.

A new feature called “Coverflow” allows you to flip through your library by viewing the album cover. This is all great just as long as you have an album cover for most of your music, otherwise you’ll be working hard to add it later to stuff that perhaps you didn’t download legally or ripped without album info.

The scrolling wheel is awesome and very responsive. Right now I have about 5700 songs, two full length movies, the first season of Metalocalypse, the first season of Robot Chicken, ATR live DVD, the Pantera DVD thats from the best of cd set, a few various internet videos and some photos and I still have about 50gb left. If you want to rip DVD or even convert videos files to iPod you will need a converting program. They are easy to find on Cnet.com and most are freeware.

The video screen you would think is not big enough to enjoy a movie or video on but its plenty big enough to enjoy that and more. I’ve waited for so long to get a GOOD mp3 player and when I won the iPod Shuffle from work it just made me want a better one. I thought about a Zune but I heard too many undesirable things about it like the fact that it doesn’t run off of Windows Media Player like you would think.

There are other iPods like the iPod Touch but it is much more expensive and only has 8 gb. Sure you can sit there and play, molesting it all days putting grubby fingerprints all over it but in the end you can only put so much on it.

Drawbacks? The shiny chrome backing (although looks really nice) and screen are terrible for attracting fingerprints. I would suggest a nice rubber or plastic cover for it. You can pick up some pretty rugged ones that will help prevent damage and keep it in good shape. One last thing, the more stuff you put on it like any computer or hard drive based electronics, the slower response you get.

Overall I love it! If you’ve got the means…I highly suggest!

For the record, No thats not MY iPod in the picture and I don’t have any Nelly Furtado on my iPod.

I’ve debated buying the All That Remains Live DVD for awhile now. I’m just not big on Live DVD’s, but since I’m going to see them live for the first time next month I figured it would be a good idea to pick this one up and see what I can expect.

The live performance of the DVD which was filmed in Philadelphia, PA and Baltimore, Maryland is good quality and the people that went to see them got a great show. Covering mostly songs from The Fall Of Ideals and a few from This Darkened Heart, Phil Labonte and his crew put on a good show. Oli Herbert is a phenomenal guitar player and Jeanne Sagan does a great job with back up vocals as well as bass. Jason Costa is an exceptional drummer and fits great in the band. Oh yeah, and Mike Martin’s pretty good too.

The extra behind the scenes footage is pretty cool, however a bit short. I like to see what the band is like when they aren’t tearing up the stage and I would have liked to see more of that. The videos are awesome as usual. Simple yet well worth watching. You don’t have to go overboard to make a good video. The DVD is fairly well priced even at expensive record stores like FYE. It is actually cheaper than most CDs. If your a ATR fan or if you even have slight interest in the band check out the All That Remains Live DVD.
