Sadly, Daath only sold around 1300 copies of The Concealers while lesser known band, Seventh Void did pretty well, selling about 1800.

Black Label Society did well with their Best of album, Skullage, selling about 4600 copies.

I really hope that Daath album catches on and takes off. I hate to beat off a dead horse, but this album is awesome.

The thing that pisses me off about Zakk Wylde is that it seems that he feels a need to make it known that he’s a great guitar player. We all know this. All of his mellow, acoustic songs are awesome, there is no arguing that, but when he takes an electric song and makes it acoustic he feels some need to still play these intricate solos on an acoustic guitar and they end up sounding rather, well, stupid!. Seriously, if we’ve learned anything from all the bands that have done an unplugged session they take the solos in the song and slow them down and make them fit.

On the Skullage CD there are the last three songs that are acoustic live numbers. The ridiculousness of taking an acoustic guitar and playing a shredding solo is just, for lack of better words, retarded. Again, sort of like the solo on In This River. I’ve said it before, but the solo on that song sounds so out of place it makes me want to skip that part of the song. I don’t mean to be a cynical bastard but when you have a song like that you want to hear a solo that is slower and has feeling sort of like a Pink Floyd solo. Although it was written before Dimebag’s death and the solo could, perhaps be considered a shredding tribute to the late great, it still sounds weird.

You know what I would love to hear, is Zakk Wylde do a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man. I don’t know if he’s already done that but I’m sure it would sound amazing. Which reminds me…(you can almost hear it if you listen closely)

You’re probably wondering why I have a picture of David Lee Roth up here. I’ll get to that in a minute.

I’m anticipating this new Megadeth Album more than I was United Abominations. Why? Because when I waited for The System Has Failed I expected a great album because it had Chris Poland on it and I thought it would reach back in to the Peace Sells days. I was wrong as were most people that were expecting the same thing. I really didn’t like ‘System and found it really hard to listen to.

United Abomination was a breath of fresh air and now I’m eager to see what Chris Broderick has to offer. James Lomenzo recently commented: “At this stage, it’s very cool with an old-school kind of ‘thrash-y’ vibe.” (from Blabbermouth) This statement got me thinking because during the Thrash hay-day, Lomenzo was working with White Lion. Now I’m about to get way off subject here.

Now I’m not picking on or disrespecting James Lomenzo here. He’s a great Bass player, but I started to look at his history and images of the like and found it kind of funny. Lomenzo during his White Lion days took on the semi-glammish look of White Lion. No big deal, that was the look back then in bands like that. Then I kind of remembered him in Black Label Society, with David Lee Roth and now Megadeth. Check it out. I wish I could post the pictures here but they don’t belong to me.

Lastly you can see James Lomenzo playing with Diamond Dave in 2002 in the photo above.

You see the trend here? I don’t think I would have really noticed or made a big deal out of it if it wasn’t for the Black Label Society photo. I do hope that the new Megadeth will be thrashy in a Megadeth way and not so much in a Death Magnetic way. (I hate to bring that up, but that’s the first thing most will think of when they see James’ statement)

There is an organization started by a former U.S. Marine Paul Hickman, to donate and send guitars to the U.S. Troops over in Iraq and Afghanistan as a moral booster. When you’re far from home like that, the smallest things make a huge difference. Zakk Wylde has always been a “For the troops” kind of guys, so when Guitars For Grunts founder contacted him to autograph a guitar for the troops, Zakk Wylde offered to supply the guitar. One of his Signature Custom Les Paul Camouflaged “Bull’s Eye” model! It was a lower end Epiphone model, but nonetheless, that was real cool of him. Hickman sent Gibson a letter about the guitar that Gibson Featured on their website:

Hickman wrote, “I just wanted to take a moment and let you know that the guitar pictured on your Web site with the Marines in Baghdad, Iraq, was in fact donated by Zakk Wylde. I contacted Zakk about allowing me to send him a guitar to sign for our troops, and he said that he would supply the guitar!

“A few weeks later that guitar arrived at my house, and shortly thereafter was on its way to the Marines in Baghdad. That picture was taken on the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad!”

1. Pink Floyd- The Division Bell has got to be by far the best music to listen to when you want to relax and feel better. Wish You Were Here and Dark Side Of The Moon are great too.

2. Zakk Wylde’s BLS- Anything mellow by Zakk’s Black Label. I’m not a big BLS fan but Zakk knows how to right some good softies.

3. Nirvana- Unplugged in NY. I don’t care who you are or where you’ve been. There is no better unplugged recording than this.

4. Stone Sour- Bother, Through Glass and Zzyxx Rd get thrown in the mix. Corey Taylor can scream his ass off but when he writes an acoustic song it is an amazing thing.

5. Marty Friedman- If you have never experienced Marty Friedman’s solo work I highly suggest getting a copy of Scenes, Introduction, Or True Obsession. Aside from being the best Guitar player Megadeth ever had, Marty is an extraordinary solo artist.

There are many other bands I may listen to when I’m trying to cure a hangover, but these are just a few that come into mind. I hope everyone had a great New Years Eve and a great New Year.
