GUITARIST ROB ARNOLD WEIGHS IN ON THE UPCOMING TOUR

Fresh off their European headlining tour, CHIMAIRA are ready to decimate the US this fall and winter on tour with Trivium! The brutal tour also features heavy hitters Whitechapel and Dirge Within. CHIMAIRA hits the road this fall, kicking off the tour October 29 in Atlanta, GA.

Guitarist Rob Arnold commented on the upcoming run with Trivium:

CHIMAIRA has exploded onto the Billboard Top 200 charts with the debut of their crushing new album, The Infection. The album landed at #30, with over 15,000 units sold. The Infection is the band’s fifth studio album and the follow up to their acclaimed 2007 release, Resurrection¸ which debuted at #42 on Billboard.

Chimaira

Sadly, Daath only sold around 1300 copies of The Concealers while lesser known band, Seventh Void did pretty well, selling about 1800.

Black Label Society did well with their Best of album, Skullage, selling about 4600 copies.

I really hope that Daath album catches on and takes off. I hate to beat off a dead horse, but this album is awesome.

We got a new Lamb Of God album that I still think is not as good as everyone else thinks; and a new Mastodon album that is musically amazing but people seem to bitch about because it’s not heavy enough or something.

Cannibal Corpse release an album that is, well, another good Cannibal Corpse album. Nothing extravagant enough to go on a murder spree, but a good album. Cattle Decapitation almost convince me to not eat beef while Sepultura almost gave me hope that I could listen to them again. That didn’t last. Psyopus almost convince me that something is wrong with my ears.

Thrash is still alive and vibrant with new releases from Kreator and neo-thrashers Lazarus A.D. bringing an old school sound with a modern touch. God Dethroned give us a WW1 History lesson.

The members that try to steal the name of the black metal band that they didn’t own the rights to, lose and start their own band. Something they should have done in the first place instead of wasting money in court.

God Forbid releases a killer, new album and then they lose a key member. Arsis also kind of loses another member and a Hatebreed member leaves the band. Arsis and Hatebreed get old members back. James Malone comes clean about his problems with anorexia, while Dallas Coyle prefers to keep his exit reasoning’s of GF private. I commend both of them for that.

Fuck Limp Bizkit. Oh, and Papa Roach too.

Dave Mustaine and Kerry King grow up and schedule tour dates with each other. Metallica gets inducted in to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. Both bassist’s thank the bands that helped launch their career, while James Hetfield doesn’t thank anyone that helped them launch theirs. Lars Ulrich claims that he downloaded Death Magnetic to see how this internet thingy works. I publish a spoof that says that Warner music file lawsuit against him and numerous sites copy me and one even publishes their own version as an April Fools joke.

Metal has two new doc[rock]umentaries that are getting rave reviews. Iron Maiden’s Flight 666 is a fan favorite and most haven’t even seen it yet. Anvil beat Hannah Montana’s ass in opening weekend of their flick The Story Of Anvil. Disney is pissed and vows revenge, citing that Anvil will never play at The House Of Blues.

I’ve yet to get an Infection from Chimaira, but Daath’s The Concealers is currently in my top 10 of 2009.

Fear Factory reunites, kind of, sort of, even after Burton C. Bell says that metal was never his thing. He then shows up at a Ministry show where him and Dino kiss and make up. Well, okay, they just talked.

I know I’ve missed a bunch of cool, or not so cool shit that has happened in ‘09, but I have to close this out somehow. There is a lot of great things in metal to come this year. More great albums, tours and surely a few more reunions, with the economy in the shitter.

Review: Chimaira – The Infection

This cd starts with my favorite track – The Venom Inside. At first listen, I thought it would just be a soft melodic intro, but it quickly transforms into a very heavy song. This is why I like Chimaira. Every song seems to have enormous weight. The next couple songs: Frozen in time, Coming Alive, Secrets of the Dead, and The Disappearing Sun are all pretty similar. They are very heavy, and have Great breakdowns. I think the audio mix on this album is amazing. The next song Impending Doom is more slow paced starting with a synth bass track and not getting into the main song for about a minute. It goes back and forth between the two paces faster and slower. It is a very good break in pace from the rest of the cd and being the sixth track comes right at about the time when you would want it.

On Broken Glass speeds the pace back up and has an enjoyable solo as most good songs should. The trend continues through Destroy and Dominate (possibly my second fav of the record) and Try to Survive. The last song on the official record is The Heart of it All. Starts off like the beginning because it has a longer intro (which I thought could have been better), but it turns out to be a very decent instrumental song that weighs in at about 9 and a half mins. I bought the Special Edition of the cd (which was cheaper than the regular edition at best buy at $10) so I also got the track Revenge. While there is nothing particularly special about it, I find it to be on pretty much the same level as the rest of the cd. The Special Edition comes with a Dvd and despite a confusing interface it had a pretty good behind the scenes 50 min Video. I learned quite a bit about the band and about the progression that they go through for a record.

I found that there is quite a bit of similarity between this record and Lamb of Gods most recent debut “Wrath”. They start off with a melodic intro, have a couple really heavy songs, have a break of pace song at track six, and end on track 11 with another melodic exit. I guess this is just the standard format, but I found it interesting. Chimaira has always been one of my favorite bands to listen to whilst working out, and this Cd is my favorite of their catalogue. If I would have any critiques they would be that there were a few parts where I felt the rhythm was off, and there definitely could have been more difference within the cd. I got exactly what I wanted from The Infection though: Very Heavy and Well Paced cd with Great Breakdowns.
