Last week, I posted about Attack! Attack!’s Johnny Franck completely losing his mind when being nearly hit by an object thrown on stage. Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so amused by Franck’s reaction, but I stand by my opinion that he overreacted (in a hilarious way). The incident with Cradle of Filth a few days ago, however, is not funny at all.

Cradle of Filth had to leave the stage at Bloodstock Open Air on August 15, 2009 after some dildo in the audience threw several large objects onto the stage, striking guitarist Paul Allender in the spine. Allender collapsed and was hospitalized.

Cradle of Filth made the following statement regarding the incident:

“CRADLE OF FILTH would just like to apologise to all CRADLE OF FILTH fans at Bloodstock for not being able to perform the full length of set on Saturday. This was due to a selfish and stupid person in the crowd throwing dangerous objects at the band and injuring Paul, who then had to be hospitalised.

This person threw what were being sold at the site as ‘gobstoppers,’ but which were actually heavy, solid, pieces of candy, approximately the size of a cricket ball and weighing close to a pound, at the band. Approximately six of these were thrown, one narrowly missed hitting Ashley in the face and also a terminally ill young fan in a wheelchair sitting side of the stage, a couple just missed Dani [Filth, vocals] and then one hit Paul in the spine, causing him to collapse. The paramedics called an ambulance and Paul was taken to hospital with suspected spinal damage; where he was subjected to numerous tests before the doctors said they didn’t think Paul had sustained any lasting damage.

This act of stupidity caused the show to finish prior to the encore, caused Paul serious pain and everyone else a lot of anxiety. This person is lucky that no one was seriously injured or worse, which could easily have been the case and a serious police matter.

Why does someone buy a ticket for a festival where everyone should be enjoying the weekend and having a good time and then have to ruin it for other people? A very selfish, sad person, one can only imagine.

So again, full apologies to everyone who was at Bloodstock to have a good time and to see the band and if you think you know who the person was that spoiled everyone else’s evening, please let us, the Bloodstock staff or the police know as soon as possible, because next time someone may not be so lucky.”

Dani Filth was righteously pissed:

“‘No one could be more disappointed than I about the ridiculous and callous incident that happened on Saturday night. Bloodstock is an event that we have long endorsed and looked forward to headlining due to its united European metal vibe, its growing popularity and of course, it being one of the better festivals held on English soil.

The crowd, as expected, were great and we were playing well with an arsenal of songs yet to deliver, when the stupidity started. I actually thought one of the balls thrown was an apple and was going to head-butt it as it flew past my head and on toward Ashley, then luckily thought twice about it. The missiles were the size of cricket balls but solid and almost a pound in weight. Enough to kill a person at that speed, according to a medic who attended Paul behind stage.

Of all the years I have spent touring the world, nothing comes even close to this for downright sheer stupidity. My ten-year-old daughter Luna was also standing side of stage when the missiles came and although, thank the stars, she was unhurt, the incident indelibly left her frightened and more than a little shook up. This is NOT the reason I brought her along to witness a metal festival and this is certainly NOT the image I want her to take away from Bloodstock or indeed any other metal festival for that matter. I hope the perpetrator(s) are really proud of themselves (sic).

So again, I apologise to all our fans who were awaiting our encore and can only hope that this selfish bastard who TRIED to ruin the night for everyone is caught and sorted out.

Hail CRADLE! Hail Bloodstock! Hail metal unity!’

I may have made light of the situation with Attack! Attack!, but seriously, it is NEVER ok to throw things on stage during a show. You’re potentially going to cause harm to someone that (a) doesn’t deserve it and (b) probably has several fans around you who might (and should) beat the shit out of you for being a selfish asshole. I’m glad that Paul and everyone else is ok, and that this incident wasn’t much more severe.

Check out the videos below, in the first you can see vocalist Dani Filth dodging a fairly large object near the end. The second video is the onstage announcement made about their short set.

When it comes to demos, I could care less most of the time. Why would a band want to release demos, besides to add some extra tracks to a “Special Edition”? Tracks that you’ll never really listen to much because they are substandard. What used to be good about demos is that they were pretty close to the original song. They may have been rough recordings, but in the end they were just less tweaked songs. These days the songs in pre-production are usually extremely rough and by the time they get all dissected, injected and molested with Pro-Tools they sound nothing like the demo. Sometimes they don’t sound far from the original and don’t sound like your typical demo. Sometimes the preproduction demo is the song and only a few things are tweaked here and there. It’s a different case than what it used to be. In any case a demo is used to present the label and/or producer with your ideas and says, “This is what we have. What can we do with it?”. I had a point somewhere in here, but I’ve completely lost it.

Some bands are all, “Let’s record this now and we’ll try to figure out later how the hell we’re going to play it live.”. Some bands record with live shows in mind and not relying so much on their back catalogue. The fact is that yes, you should play a lot of new songs from your album as soon as you start touring in support of it. Play the old ones too, but you’re on tour to sell tickets, merch and the new record. Some may not care to hear the new songs right off the line, but they’ll come around.

With all that said and not having much to do with the rest of this post, Cradle Of Filth has released a demo track from their last release Godspeed On The Devil’s Thunder. The demo is for the track Honey And Sulphur. It’s not bad if you like this band and want to hear a song that sounds similar to the one on the album. The reason the title says “Why?” is because they release the album and a special edition, so I really don;t see the point. Perhaps record sales are down and they needed some news to keep them in the stream of things and get people’s attention again. I really don’t know.

Holy crap, there is so much stuff coming out today. On a side note, before I get started the new (and last from the bad) Light This City Stormchaser will be coming on November 11th. I got a review copy the other day and I’m really diggin it. I’ll write up a review later in the week. AC/DC has sold over 3/4 of a million copies of their new album Black Ice in the U.S. alone and over 5 million copies worldwide. That’s some crazy numbers. It’s a cool rock album if you dig AC/DC. I’ll be transcribing the Opeth interview this evening and hopefully be working a few other interviews in the next coming weeks. Let’s get to it.

On CD

Beneath The Massacre: Dystopia on Prosthetic Records. (I just reviewed this yesterday. Some good stuff if you like a lot of melodic, treble string work in your death metal.)

Carcass: Reek Of Putrefaction CD/DVD. (As I said yesterday, if you’re a Carcass fan then you will want to add this to your collection.)

Cradle Of Filth: Godspeed On The Devil’s Thunder on Roadrunner. (If you read the title slower it says “God’s Peed On The Devil’s Thunder”)

Burning The Masses: Mind Control on Mediaskare

Machine Head: The Blackening Special Edition (I hate late release special editions, but this one seems like a must-have)

Hatebreed: For The Lions on Koch. (All Covers album)

Enslaved: Vertabrae on NUclear Blast

Bloodbath: The Fathomless Mastery on Peaceville. (A must-have if you’re a fan of Bloodbath or Opeth.)

Abigail Williams: In The Shadows Of A Thousand Suns. (Is that even possible?)

On DVD

Mushroomhead Vol. 2 (This is an awesome DVD with a lot of tour and backstage footage)

Fellow b5media Blogger Roberta over at Earsucker.com had a chance back in September ‘07 to interview Cradle Of Filth’s Back up vocals and lead vocalist for Angtoria, Sarah Jezebel Deva.
Below is a short excerpt from her interview. Click on the link at the bottom for the entire interview.

Earsucker: How is singing for Angtoria different Cradle of Filth? Are you more pleased with the sound?
SJD: Hard to say if I’m more pleased. Angtoria, I’m lead, Filth I’m backing. I’m proud of both.
Interview: Sarah Jezebel Deva
That’s a whole lot of scary woman!

I want to better understand why people are so hateful to bands that I actually like and think are very talented. In return I give some reasons why I hate some of the bands I always bash on here. Whether it’s metalcore, hardcore, nu metal whatever, I want to know what drives your hate for some of the bands on this list below. I want to better understand why people are so hateful to bands that I actually like and think are very talented. In return I give some reasons why I hate some of the bands I always bash on here. So Why do you hate:?

Why Do You Hate:…

Killswitch Engage? Sure some of them have kinda cheezy stage antics but the sound is great and diverse…perhaps it’s not evil enough for some metal heads?
Slipknot? Yeah..I know why…because it’s Nu Metal and all Nu Metal Sucks right? I agree that a lot of it does…but I really dig this bands sound. Would it make a difference if they didn’t wear masks and jumpsuits?
Hatebreed? Unless you’re just not into hardcore. Jasta and crew bring it heavy and straight forward.
Divine Heresy? Dino’s new crew has a bit of a FF sound but Do you expect Dino to change the way he plays or the sound of his gear? Besides, FF hasn’t put out a decent album since Demanufacture so why not?
Trivium? Matt Heafy and the boys are amazing talents. I love the guitar work from these guys but was never big on the vocal points until The Crusade. The Crusade was the record that people started calling them “Metallica” clones because Matts vocals kinda sound like a young James Hetfield. I say as long as they don’t sound like a new James-AH Hetfield-AH! then sing on.

Ok, so now it’s my turn…

Him? It’s not so much the music that I hate, it’s the fact that they keep calling it metal and how much Vile acts like a little Diva bitch.
Avenged Sevenfold? Once again it’s because they keep calling this shit metal. These guys don;t know what they want to be. Metal, punk? they just don’t know. They plaster themselves with tats and eyeliner to try to fit an image. I don’t know what the deal is but don’t like it.
Papa Roach? I bought a Papa Roach CD once. $13.99 of my hard earned cash I’ll never get back and 10 minutes of my life that I never want to remember. These guys are the kings of a mediocre single and a shitload of fillers.
Cradle Of Filth? I’m a huge Misfits fan and they did a horrid cover of Halloween on the Underworld 2 soundtrack…and I don’t really like black metal so that pretty much sums it up.
DragonForce? While I feel they are extremely talented, this music annoys the hell out of me.

Throw some other band names in too. Why do you hate _______?

I find the make up and drama kinda corny but I’m starting to enjoy some of the tunes. And why does it look as if every member of a black metal band has a bad case of arthritis?
