Just saw this over at Brave Words. Dave has been catching a lot of shit lately, so I guess he’s decided to make a statement regarding his feelings toward journalists and gossip mongers. I can’t say that I blame him. This is an interesting read, especially when he mentions the alternate universe possibility of Dimebag Darrell and brother Vinnie Paul as guitarist and drummer for Megadeth.

“So yesterday I am doing an interview, the third in a day-full of interviews, which I am so weary of, and their “certain” questions, that it can turn the mood of an interview into complete shit with-in seconds.

I mean do interviewers not know that I am onto them? That I know they are just waiting to spring an antagonistic question to get me to talk shit about someone?

You have no idea how much it sucks to be talking to a complete stranger, baring your soul, and then the person springs the questions that he has been salivating over asking, and with-in seconds, like I said, the interviews can turn south.

I think it is unfortunate that you, as my fans, or if you’re just lurking, and even if you are here under false pretences just to be a shit stirrer (and there are a few here), it still sucks to be reading an interview and then it sours, and you are left at the mercy of the guy telling the story in the press, because he will ultimately decide that selling his magazine (or whatever – some people don’t even have a job, and they just fool our publicity department at Roadrunner and get to the band) is more important than decency, character, and literary, journalistic integrity.

There are journos out there that do have these good qualities and character traits like this, but they are few and far between. Mostly because they are music fans too, and then want to be famous too, what started as an innocent desire to bring interesting information to a curious audience is surpassed be ego and vanity. The thought of asking questions that hurt peoples’ feelings or that could destroy lives, families, friendships, and ultimately the relationship that would result in selling more magazines (or whatever) by having said relationship versus an artist saying, ‘I never want to talk to this ‘person’ again.

Ok, so what brought all this on?

Yesterday, an interviewer was asking me about people that have said that they auditioned for us, but that they were too busy with their band, or that they were doing something that would have resulted in something bigger than joining Megadeth. Basically that they were too good for us, and I just shook my head. I tried to answer the question, but it just went completely south.

Here’s what happened . . . when we were trying to replace Jeff (Young) and before we found Marty (Friedman) we auditioned a lot of people. and most of them sucked. Therefore, anyone in-between Jeff and Marty, and that means EVERYONE that said they auditioned weren’t good enough, regardless of what they said. The fact that there are people saying that they were too busy with their own shit too is rubbish, There were only two people that I called. Junior may have called them, but if I don’t make the decision, then you ain’t in the band. So, you can imagine my temperament as this kept on.

We even had some dunce named Steve Cox spouting that he wrote ‘Wake Up Dead’, and we were already writing R.I.P., so tell me, how the fuck is that possible Steve?

That is not the end of it. I had a friend, who is no longer a friend, that gave me his shit demo tape, and after The World Needs A Hero came out, he had the balls, no, let me rephrase that because he only had one ball, so he had the ball to say that “Dread And The Fugitive Mind” was his song. Staggeringly stupid statement, if you ask me.

I then got into what the difference is between a good guitarist and a great one. I think that Chris Poland, Marty Friedman, and Chris Broderick were the only noteworthy guitarists in Megadeth, Chris being the best. I also said that I thought that myself, Jeff Young, and Al Pitrelli were good, but not great like Polie (Chris Poland) and Marty, and certainly not one of us latter three I mentioned could touch the former three.

That is my opinion, but for some reason, I have a feeling that the interview would be a disaster if I didn’t explain this. The journo is not on my shit list, so no harm there, but the question and the fact that there are people out there that are saying stuff like this, and then to look at what they have done, which is dwarfed by Megadeth, I think just looks ridiculous.

Go ahead if you want to say you auditioned, but I think you look silly. Either way, Junior (David Ellefson) would know if they did or not, because like I said, anyone, EVERY SINGLE PERSON that auditioned between Jeff and Marty were not good enough!

There is only two people that I asked and one lived too far away, and was a bit nutty anyway, and that was my friend Jeff Waters (ANNIHILATOR). The other person was Darrell (Dimebag) Abbott (ex-PANTERA) and he would have been in Megadeth if I didn’t hire Nick Menza. Here’s why . . . Darryl and I talked, and he asked me, ‘Can I bring my brother,’ and I said who is your brother, and he said, “He is my drummer,” and I said, “shit, I just hired Nick Menza,” and we parted ways that day.

I would have loved to have played with Darrell and Vinnie (Paul) Abbott (ex-Pantera), no offense to Nick Menza, but I think that I made a mistake on this one. I am glad that I chose Nick and stuck by him, but the imagination has to go off the Richter scale when one thinks of what Darrell, Vinnie, Junior and I would have done. WOW! I guess I will have to wait for heaven to find out.

So, in closing, I don’t know if the two guys he asked about were ever ‘called’ to join Megadeth. I do know that they were not called by me, because I was NEVER familiar with their bands, in fact I have never heard one single note of either one of their music, therefore, I have no idea how they play, and I WOULDN’T KNOW WHO THE PERSON IS.

Guys like Steve Cox, you just end up looking really silly, me, I look like I am pissed all the time. I will admit I have anger issues, and this is helping!! [Snarl]

Moving on, I am off to the sporting goods store to go get some more fun stuff for the studio and the school here. I am also moving a lot of stuff down to the studio for our eBay store. Each tour we clean out the lockers of all the stage, dressing room, wardrobe, and gear that we accumulate and that we need to pass on to people who will really benefit and enjoy the items. We have a lot of stuff that we have been donating to local schools and churches too, which is a great feeling, so thank you for making all of this happen. Even the fun schismy parts of the day.

I love you all, and I am looking forward to finishing the interview I was doing yesterday, because they are supposedly inducting something of mine into their H.O.F., and I am honored to say the least. [Big Grin]

Have a great day, remember to do something good for yourself, and I would even try doing something good for someone else too, if you can stand it!”

I can’t confirm the band or the dates yet, and I have to go get my youngster up for school. Rest assured, as soon as we are ready to announce it, you will be one of the first to know. Check here at the official Megadeth Forums, the Killing Road pages, and here at TheLIVEline.com.

So who is the mystery band(s) that they are going to tour with? Some may think that it’s Metallica, but if I were to take an educated guess it would be Slayer. Megadeth and Dave Mustaine performed at this past weeks Revolver Golden God Awards and Slayer was also present at the show where Dave was seen talking to them. Sure, seeing Megadeth perform with Metallica would be something that most people would never expect but Dave has had issues with Kerry King for awhile now too. Maybe it’s going to have Vinnie Paul. Mustaine had a feud with Pantera awhile back too, but I really wouldn’t want to see Megadeth with Hell Yeah! Let’s hope it’s Slayer.

Former members were invited to appear and/or perform, but only those that performed on released official records will be among the inductees.

Dave Mustaine was invited to attend but due to touring he couldn’t make the date. Do I think Dave Should be inducted among the members of Metallica? Honestly it’s kind of a maybe but no, not really type feelings. He may have had a great influence on their sound in the early days and they may have even used a few of his songs he wrote before being fired, but fame and fan-hood doesn’t revolve around records alone. You have to get out there and play the music. The records don’t get big by just being released, the band has to go out there and play the records live and promote them just like anything else. Metallica have toured their asses off in the last 26 years.

Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney both played for Metallica in the early days before Kill ‘Em Al was released. The line-up on Kill ‘Em All did not include these two and they won’t be inducted. I would rather see Dave get inducted for Megadeth, his own baby that he birthed into one of the giants of metal. I would first like to see other great bands get inducted that deserve it and while The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame has various genres and bands in it, I would love to one day see a Heavy Metal Hall Of Fame, but that’s not likely to happen. Here is a little of what Jason Newstead said according to Blog Magnetic.

“There’s three bass players getting inducted, and James, Lars and Kirk,” former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted said. Former guitarist Dave Mustaine will not be inducted. “Its not my decision. I have nothing to do with that. It was decided by the band, and I think it was just a hard-and-fast rule… anyone who has recorded on any Metallica recordings that have been released to the public as an official release were invited to the induction. So, that’s kind of that.”

Love them or hate them, talk trash or praise them, Metallica have established themselves as one of the greatest metal bands and are living legends in the genre. It wouldn’t be the same and we wouldn’t have many of the bands we have today without them. With that said, let’s watch a classic live video with Newstead doing a bass solo from Live Shit: Binge & Purge (I think).

I think it’s kind of cool that the members of Megadeth give everyday updates, but I wonder if this is like Dave’s policy or something. Do they have a schedule of who’s day it is to give the daily update or do they do like rock-paper-scissors for it after their morning Wheaties and Legend’s Cup coffee.
Obviously it’s a slow news day. I’m also tired of waiting for the new album already.

I am sitting in my office at 5:30ish AM and am typing this as I try to wake up. Yesterday, Andy Sneap went back to the UK for a while, as we are preparing to go out on the Priest Feast Tour. This means effectively that the recording has stopped, until we return in March/April.

We finished all of the rhythm and bass guitars, as well as the drums being finished for a couple weeks now, and I think I even heard some acoustic layers. The reaction from our management, family, friends (the real critics), and my number one judge and coach Justis, has been pretty positive.

Take note, Rick Ruben. Andy Sneap was with them in the recording studio DURING the recording and pre-production phase. Crazy…I know, but that’s how things get done the right way. I know it’s been awhile, dude, but you should try it sometime.

Tour dates for Priest Feast after the fold.

I was also one of those customers that always forgot to mail the stupid little card back that said that I didn’t want the “Featured” artist cd. One of the cds that I received because of this was Dave Mustaine’s project MD.45. I was a bug Megadeth fan back then so needless to say I was excited about this when I got it. The excitement didn’t last long though. The original release of The Craving was a huge disappointment for me. The guitars and everything was cool but the vocals just didn’t sound right. The vocalist, Lee Ving just sounded as if he was singing lyrics that were not designed for his voice and style. Lee Ving, in case you’re not familiar with the record or his history, was the singer for L.A. punk band Fear. On The Craving the vocals just didn’t click with me and with most people, if the vocals don’t click then it makes it very difficult to enjoy the music as a whole.

Mustaine described this album as a punk/metal record and had said that Ving’s vocal range is more soulful and that he wanted to work with Ving for a long time. Jimmy DeGrasso, who has played with various other bands, covered the drums on MD.45 and would later go on to play drums for Megadeth. Kelly LeMieux is more of a session bass player who has played for various artists. In 2004 while remaster and remixing Megadeth’s back catalog, Dave decided to remix and remaster The Craving. This time around he replaced Lee’s vocals with his own due to the vocal and harmonica tracks being missing. Dave says that he doesn’t feel his vocals sound better on the new version but that he thinks more fans will take to this with him singing on it. He was right.

While the leads and rhythms on The Craving are not as complex as a typical Megadeth album, the tone is still there and they are still catchy. With Dave’s vocals on the remastered version I have come to really like this album. It almost feels like a lost Megadeth album. Not a good Megadeth album, but more like a compilation of songs that weren’t quite good enough to make it on a Megadeth album. Appropriately one of the songs on the album, The Creed was a Megadeth song that was demo’d but never used on earlier albums. The actual Megadeth demo is included on the remastered version.

Along with The Creed there are also two other bonus tracks. Chutney, a slow galloping track with what sounds like looped lyrics of four lines. Not a great song and can become annoying after the first minute. The last bonus track is called Segue and it’s only 1 minute, 24 seconds long. It’s nothing special either with a cool bass solo at the beginning and circus sounding leads. Sounds goofy? Well it is, and if you buy the cd for the bonus tracks alone and not because you wan to hear Dave sing then you will be disappointed.

I think most people are happy that the original vocal tracks were “Lost” and that Dave re-sang the parts instead of Lee Ving. A lot of people complained of the vocals in The Craving and Dave, well…Dave listened to the critics and it probably helped sell the remastered version. The original sat in discount and cut-away bins within a year of it’s original release. I found my copy of the new version in used condition, so apparently not everyone likes this version either. Either way, if you didn’t like the original then give this remastered version a try. It’s a brighter sounding album that some say sounds more like a metal Megadeth album and not the original punk influenced metal sound that was intended. I think it just sounds like better production with a more modern sound. The bass is thicker, the drums are cleaner and more clear and I think it sounds much better. What I do miss is the harmonica that was there before. That was one of the other tracks that went missing. Dave used his guitar to synthesize the harmonica and while it still sounds good it doesn’t have the same feel as the harmonica gave the songs, but it fits with the new version.

I got things done kind of early yesterday so there was a bunch of fairly relevant news items that I missed.

Dave Mustaine says that he and producer Andy Sneep have decided that they have what they need to start recording the new Megadeth album.

All That Remains front-man Phil Labonte will be on XM Radio’s Liquid Metal (channel 42) tonight between 9 and 10 pm EST. The segment will re-air on the 16th at 11pm and the 17 at 5pm. ATR are heading to the UK to tour with The Haunted on the 17th and then to Europe on the 26th.

Tommy Araya has a brother that plays bass too? Apparently so. Johnny Araya plays bass for Thine Eyes Bleed but will be filling in for Mindless Self Indulgence bassist “Lynz: for their Kerrang! tour in the UK.

Papa Roach are putting out a new album on March 24th called Metamorphosis. Maybe one day their music will metamorphosis in to something relatively listenable.

Poison and Def Leppard are going to tour together this year despite a pretty lame war of words last year between the two bands.

Does anyone really give a crap about this new Osbournes reality/variety show coming on fox?

Warrant and L.A. Guns members are forming a Led Zeppelin tribute band…as if there aren’t enough of those. I have a Led Zeppelin tribute album with both bands on it and it’s the worst tribute album I think I have ever heard. It pretty much just sounds like vocal-overs of the original music.

Chimaira resigned their worldwide deal with Nuclear Blast. Nuclear Blast handles the bands business everywhere else but North American, where Ferret Music handles it.

RATT is recording new music and Stephen Pearcy says it will surely kick ass. I honesty don’t think RATT could write an album that appeals to the current metal fans and I doubt if there will be a million 40+ year old hair metal fans camping out in front of the record stores awaiting this.

Lastly, Dean Guitars is unveiling a new ML Design that looks like just about any other ML with the exception of the pickups being close together. That company will never top the Razorback. Check out a picture of it at BW&BK. Click on the picture when you get there.
