That history being that so many influential and break through death metal bands paved the way for so many other bands out of The Sunshine State.
January’s issue of Revolver Magazine has a great article on the history of Florida Death Metal with contribution from David Vincent (Morbid Angel), Glen Benton (Deicide), John Tardy (Obituary), Paul Masvidal (Death, Cynic) and Scott Burns.

If you don’t have a clue who Scott Burns is, he is responsible for many early productions of death metal bands from the Florida scene.

I highly recommend this article. It’s a great read and you get to see just how much of a demented bastard Glen Benton really is. The Article talks about how, when the grunge scene errupted in the early/mid 1990’s how like most other genres, Death Metal kind of got pushed back underground like most metal did.

Even these days with the rise of the Metal/Deathcore bands popping up like mushrooms on a damp spring day, the death metal bands that persevered through the slump still live on strong. Sadly, most snot-nose kids in the cookie-cutter bands we see all over the place, growling into the microphone haven’t a clue when, where or with whom the scene began to form and they could care less. Most of them just want fame and to make a few bucks. Unless they present themselves as something epic, that’s all they’ll ever make…a few bucks. Regardless of the garbage that plagues the shelves of record stores and myspace, we’ll always have the bands that put the American Death Metal scene together, whether they’re from Florida, NY, California or Hell’s Half Acres. They can’t take away what’s already been carved in to metal history no matter how much they taint it.

Also, yesterday, December 13th marks the day that Chuck Schuldiner of Death, died at a far too young age of 34 years old back in 2001 of brain cancer. Chuck was one of the first great pioneers of the genre.

R.I.P., Chuck~

Blabbermouth reported that Diecide had to cancel their remaining South American tour dates after they got shafted by a Honduran airline and shoddy promoters. South/Central American promoters seem to be getting quite the reputation for not coming through on their end of the deals. Glen Benton made the following statement:

“This morning [Sunday, November 23] we went to the airport in Honduras and the fine folks at [the airline] gave our tickets away to other people, and when we tried to change the tickets and make the remaining shows, there were no other flights available to get us to El Salvador, and the promoter expected us to drive across countries, through document and border checks and with no guarantee of safe return. And, because our agent didn’t give us any contact info or contracts for the promoters down there, or answer his phone (we called 100 times with no answer), we were forced to come back to the States, completely because of the way this Central American run was mishandled by the promoter in Central America and the agent. We had no choice but to come back or get stuck there without flights.

So far all you guys that were expecting to see Deicide in South America…well crap! You can read the rest of the statement at Blabbermouth.

It featured album covers that were controversial due to graphic images of evil, death, sex, etc. They had some really good picks of some great albums. A few included are Pantera’s original concept for Far Beyond Driven, Nashville Pussy’s Let Them Eat Pussy album, Cannibal Corpse‘ Butchered At Birth as well as Deicide’s Once Upon The Cross. Some of them were not really graphic as to having a sexual or image of death or gore, but some being images of evil such as Mercyful Fate’s classic Don’t Break The Oath, Iron Maiden’s The Number Of The Beast and Venom’s Welcome To Hell. You can check out some of the ones they say they couldn’t show in the magazine. Some of them are gory, some just downright foul and one (The Scorpions’ Virgin Killer) could be considered child pornography these days. Here are a few of my favorites. Click on the thumbnail for a better view.

Cannibal Corpse Tomb Of The Mutilated: I thought this albm cover was cool back then and I still dig it to this day. Yeah, it’s kind of sick and twisted…but that’s Cannibal Corpse for you. They didn’t show this one in the magazine, but it’s in the online list.

Deicide Once Upon The Cross: Although these days I’m not the Jesus hater that I was back when this was released, I understand that it’s just a picture. No big deal. I respect the art and still think this is a cool metal album cover. The original art presented is inside the cover and depicts Jesus on an autopsy table, with his chest open.

Metallica Kill ‘Em All: It doesn’t really show much more than a bloody hammer and that’s all you really need to see. One of the most simplistic yet kick ass album covers of all time. If I had a choice to go back in time and choose between the original knife and toilet picture of “Metal Up Your Ass” and this one for their debut, I would pick this one. It’s timeless!

Megadeth Youthanasia: Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying was in the magazine, and they mention that in this day of post 9/11 that it almost foretold the future and makes it a timeless classic. I can agree, but the most graphically violent Megadeth album cover is Youthanasia, depicting how we are hung out to dry. Babies hanging from a clothes line…what more can you say?

Danzig Thrall Demon sweat Live EP: Although I don’t consider Danzig a great live band, this CD cover, drawn by then DC Comics artists Simon Bisley is awesome. Just look at it….that’s a cool cover, especially if your a Danzig fiend! Simon has also done art work on Danzig 6:66 Satan’s Child and I think he did the work for The Lost Tracks Of Danzig

Rage Against The Machine’s debut album showed a Buddhist monk in Viet Nam during a protest in Saigon in 1963 that set himself afire. What is so great about some dude setting himself on fire? He did this out of protest of the killing of other Buddhists by the government at the time. It was an actual photo that won the Pulitzer Prize and the monk that set himself on fire did it and didn’t move. He didn’t get up running and screaming in pain. He set himself on fire and sat there and let himself burn to death without a word!

Open Defiance, a band out of Northern Virginia. I bought this at a small record store back in1996. I don’t know what has happened with this band since, but back then it was a cool cd. I’m not to huge on it these days, but they had that classic photo of a baby holding up the middle finger on the debut album cover. Sure it’s not really an original idea these days and you’ve probably seen it a million times since then, but back in ‘96 it was the shit.

This last one is so vile and disgusting that I could not post the picture here. You’ll have to click on the link to see who it is and what album cover. It almost makes me sick when I look at this one. Be warned, the following album cover is not for weak stomachs. Click the link below.

The theme this week is “10 One Hit Wonder Band & Songs I Can’t Get Out of My #!@%ing Head“. Unfortunately this has been a tough one for me. I can’t think of any Metal One Hit Wonders who’s songs get stuck in my head. However I can think of all sorts of terrible songs that get stuck in my head whenever I hear just the smallest part of the song or a word that has some significance to the song. Here is my list of 5 terrible songs that every now and then get stuck in my head and it drives me nuts.

Right Said Fred I’m Too Sexy. I hate this song as does 99% of the world but it’s one of those songs that terribly difficult to get out of your head when there is no other music around to hear and wash it away.

Barry Manilow- Copa Cabana. If I hear someone say the words “Lola” Showgirl” or “Copa” this song is set in my mind for at least a half hour or until I hear something else or get a better song stuck in my head.

The Kinks – Lola. The only thing I can do to get this song out of my head is to change the words up and make my own humorous mix of it.

Urge Overkill- Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon. I don’t know all the words to this song but everytime there is an advertisement for Pulp Fiction they play this song and it always gets stuck. Not necessarily a terrible song…but I don’t care for it and I don’t like it stuck in my head.

Mini Riperton- Lovin’ You. I had to look that one up on Amazon.com. Anyway It’s an annoying song and easily get stuck in my head.

Honorable Mentions are Don’t Cha Wish by The Pussycat Dolls (My wife listens to that shit sometimes) and The Black Eyed Peas, My Humps (She listens to them too) She tolerates my music so I have to tolerate hers sometimes as well. I just try to put some headphones on or go in another room.

Now just because I said these songs get stuck in my head does not mean that I am singing them out loud. I do have my pride to think about. The best thing I can do to get songs like these out of my head is to put something on that just rips through your skull like a runaway freight train. Songs Like Lunatic Of God’s Creation by Deicide or Morbid Angel’s Rapture. Unless you’re totally unexposed to the songs or similar songs, then you too are susceptible to this problem. Don’t try to act as if you’re too “Metal” to have it happen to you.

What Song that you absolutely hate gets stuck in Your head?
