Last week I bought “Get Thrashed: The Story Of Thrash Metal“. I had a problem with the DVD though. It was unbalanced or something. It wouldn’t play correctly in a standard DVD player, but would play fine in my Laptop. I took it back to exchange it for another copy today, but they were all out. Instead they gave me credit and let me exchange it for something else so I found the new Dimebag Darrell book He Came To Rock.

The book also came with Dimevision Vol. 1. The book is great and is full of pictures of Dime, friends, guitars, etc. It also has dialogue from Vinnie and other friends and family of Dimebag as well as some history on Dimebag and the bands he’s played in.

The DVD, if you’ve never seen it is mostly hand-held footage from various places and stages. There is a lot of shots at Dime’s home and a lot of fireworks. I don’t know how this dude never burned his house down. Some dime footage of the early days and more recent footage from 2004, shortly before his death. The sound quality is low because most of the film quality is low, but it’s still a blast to watch Dimebag Darrell having a good time, all the time even after his brand new Escalade gets damaged.

A lot of people have jumped on Rita Haney and Vinnie Paul Abbott for putting stuff like this out, calling it marketing on and making money off of Dime’s death. I feel that this book and DVD are more of a gift (A gift you have to pay for of course) to the fans of Dimebag. It costs money to make stuff like this and I don’t think that it is nothing more than a tribute to Dimbag, the cool cat that he was and the amazing talent that he brought that could never be emulated.

The book is a must have for fans and the DVD is a gift of seeing Dime playing and ripping these monstrously unbelievable solos and Dime just being a party animal and even speaking from the heart about music and recording. It will have you laughing your ass off at times and sad at other times knowing that you’ll never be able to see him play again and to know that so many people lost a good friend.

Great Book, Great DVD. Can’t wait to see Dimevision Vol. 2. Amazon sell this for about $27 brand new but you might be able to find it at Best Buy for $19.99. You can also order it from Big Vin Records and get a free copy of Rebel Meets Rebel for $29.99. If you love Dime and the music he brought us then you will love this book and DVD.

Soldiers Of Scrape are from the motor city, and if you don’t know what the motor city is then pull your head out of your anal cavity and google it. Originally known as Bowl Scraper, they have just released Operation: Shifting Gears a couple of months ago. With influences from obvious Old School metal bands, S.O.S. brings a true metal sound. Sure their sound is nothing really new to the scene, but it is awesome. Mick Stone kind of sounds like a mix of Randy Blythe and Phil Anselmo, Wayne Crouton is a great bassplayer and did a hell of a job dealing with a slight setback with his bass strings during the show. Andy Falk is a great drummer, but I don’t think I can quite compare him to Vinnie Paul. Lastly, Face Hall obviously has been influenced by both Dimebag Darrell and Kerry King.

Singing songs of Drinking, tributes to Old School metal and the lives of our lost metal heroes, A tribute to Kerry King (KFKR), and Metal unity, Soldiers Of Scrape were my favorite band of the night. They closed their set with Pantera’s Domination which transitioned into the chorus of Hollow. I love it when I find new favorites in lesser known bands. I’m sure if you mentioned the name in Detroit or the surrounding areas, you would get a “Hell Yeah!” from just about any one of their home town Metalheads.

Support the troops of The Soldiers Of Scrape, spread the word and fly the bird!

The month of March was quite interesting. A lot of great things happened for me and a few great CD’s came out this month. I gave away some cool prizes and the first batch of the MetalMartyr.Com Compilations went out as well. Below is a list of links to some of this months posts that I think are worth a re-run.

The RIAA is still relentless about screwing artist out of money they get from settlements from illegal, Read about it here

I gave a list of My top 10 songs and cds this year. Some are new and some are old favorites. Check them out. Metal Martyr Top 10

I had a chance to check out a great show the beginning of the month and I got video Interviews with All That Remains Phil Labonte (Part 1 and Part 2), Light This City’s Laura Nichol and Ben Murray, and Black Tide.

Metallica Is Reissuing older releases on Vinyl.

Creator Destructor Records is a label operated by Light This City’s Drummer Ben Murray. Starting small but sure to get much bigger.

The Metal Potential Of 2008 is going to be great with all the great bands releasing new work and touring this year.

Sub-genre Hatred is never ending. Do you hate Metalcore?

I did a review of Marc Canter’s Book Reckless Road, the first years of Guns N Roses. I also called Slash Saul Rosenburg when his real name is Saul Hudson. Must have heard The Jerky Boys say Saul Rosenburg a few too many times and it stuck in my head.

I did a quick interview with Troy Medlin (T-Roy) of Southern Sludge Metal Band Sourvein here.

Metal has never been really radio friendly except on satellite radio

Do you think DragonForce’s song Through The Fire And Flames compares to the classic Eddie Van Halen Solo song Eruption? Let me know.

Black Tide released Light From Above on Interscope records and the Cavalera brother reunited for the Cavalera Conspiracy. Is there a possibility of a Sepultura reunion?

I did a quick review on As I Lay Dying’s First Recordings on The Long March

I talked about My favorite Concert and stepped away from Metal for a moment and talked about Straight Edge Punk legends Minor Threat.

Dimebag Hardware Clothing Line is up and running.

In Flames Release A Sense Of Purpose tomorrow. I got a copy early and I love it!

Metal fans are like rabid Pitbulls and sometimes we turn on our own. Read about it in I Am Hated part 1 and Part 2.

That’s about it for the month of March. If you want to see what else got posted this month, Click here.

As for me, I’m going to take the rest of the evening easy, throw some new Ernie Balls on my Ibanez and play around a bit. See you next month and thanks for coming!

This is just the beginning of the clothing line and I expect more accessories and camouflage cargo shorts soon. By clicking on the pictures of the t-shirts on the site it will take you directly to Guitarcenter.com where you can purchase the t-shirts at very fair prices. This is just the beginning of the clothing line and I expect more accessories and camouflage cargo shorts soon. A lot of people are going to say it’s another way to make money from a deceased metal icon. But I think it’s more of a way to pay tribute and show your love for one of the best and most creative guitar players to ever grace our ears in the world of metal. RIP DIME!

Click on the picture to go to guitarcenter.com (The Source of the image) and check out other Dimebag Hardware available.

However Through The Fire And Flames to me may be a bit too long and overly noodled. I can’t play Eruption or TTFAF and I wouldn’t give either a try. If anything I consider myself a rhythm guitarist and the most complex licks I have probably ever made an effort to learn are the intro to Crazy Train, the beginning of Sweet Child Of Mine and the lead in the beginning of For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Most people knew at least one guy that always showed up when you were trying to jam in a public place and wanted to show off how cool he was by playing Eruption. More power to them for taking the time to learn that song but I just don’t have that kind of patience to bother with that kind of guitar work. Save it for the talent show, buddy. I find it much more fun to just jam out on a bunch of power chords and make some bad ass rhythm lines. I’ve never taken any kind of lessons, learned any type of method and I have a ball doing what I do.

So back to the origin of the article. Like I said, while DragonForces Through The Fire And Flames is a wildly complicated tune and remarkably long enough to make an insomniac grow sleepy with it, it just will never have that same pizzazz that Eruption had and still has. The new 300th edition of Guitar World Magazine has 18…yeah, 18 pages of Through The Fire And Flames transcribed. To me that’s 18 pages that could have been used to transcribe 3 other songs…but I still bought the magazine. However there is a cd with a lot of classic Guitar World videos featuring guitar hero’s like Dave Mustaine, Dimebag Darrell, EVH, Zakk Wylde, Slash and Kerry King. Metallica’s Call Of Kthulu is transcribed as well. The Magazine goes through all 300 issues and summarizes each one. Other than 18 pages of Dragonforce, this is a pretty good issue.

Enough of all this “He Said-She Said” Bull<strike>Shit</strike> already. You can call Phil what you want, you can blame anyone you please but it’s still not going to bring your boyfriend back, Rita. We would ALL like to believe that this is all a bad dream…but it’s not. Dimebag is gone and it’s time to move on.

We all say shit we regret every now and then and all we can do is learn from our mistakes and live with regret. Phil Anselmo, as huge as his ego is has feelings as well as the rest of us and in his much less clouded state of mind he is in these days I’m sure he feels more regret than ever. It doesn’t change the past, just molds the future.

The only person you can point a finger at and blame for Dime’s death is the schizophrenic dip-shit, Nathan Hale. You can try to blame his mother for allowing him to have a hand gun in the state of mind he was in, but if he didn’t already have a gun he would have acquired one somewhere else. Thats was sick criminals do. They find a way to commit heinous, violent crimes one way or another.

Lay this to rest already for the love of God! Celebrate his memory, not his death.

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost three years already. As you know Dimebag tributes, article and interviews are going to start crawling out of the wood work. I figured I’d knock mine out early by posting this older interview (November) with Dime’s former girlfriend “Rockin Rita”. Here are a few excerpts, you can read the entire interview at Metalmonthly.com

On Phil Anselmo:
Metal Monthly: Your Thoughts on Phil, is he a part of the problem or part of the solution?

Rita: Hahaha! He’s not our problem anymore! But seriously, I think people have the right to choose what they like or dislike… my issues with Anselmo are my own & they shouldn’t have to be anyone else’s, if I ask people to choose… then I wouldn’t be any better than him! He has been the king of lies & manipulation in our camp for a long time, I know now that, that started with the Heroin use, but he can never go back to being the person he once was, & when he was that person, man he was on!!! A great front man & I would never try & say different, ut I just don’t believe or believe in him anymore… I can’t! When that Metal Hammer interview came out with Philip saying Dimebag Darrell needs to be beaten severely… (& no matter how he tries to explain that one away he said it! Plus a few other things! Metal Hammer sent the audios of his interview to Vinnie & yes! That’s Phil Anselmo’s voice! I heard it myself!)…. But after it was posted on Blabbermouth, Dime asked me & I could hear the lump in his throat, “What did I ever do to him?” & you know… I had to fight the lump in my own throat, I hated seeing him hurt, and he asked me again, “What did I ever do to him?” & I told ‘em,”Nothin’ baby… all you ever did was love ‘em & in his heart you are the one person on this earth that he truly respects & he can’t face you… so in his drug induced mind he’s made you his enemy… for no reason at all… all because he’s a junkie & your not, which makes you not part of his world” & ya know, he said, “Maybe you’re right, but I can’t do this anymore” I know the last thing Dime told me that day about him was he was done! He would never stand on stage with him again! Philip had humiliated & embarrassed him for the last time! Dime told me then, “I’m writing him off, no longer will he trample through my peaceful mind!” & When that tour bus came home & there was no one to get off of it… that was one of the hardest things I had to do was go on there & pack up his bunk, but while I was doing it I found a 2 page letter that Dime had written about Philip & in his own handwriting it says what he had told me that day & a few other things about Mr. Anselmo, so in my heart I just can’t believe in him anymore… it’s tired… when Dime forgives him then I will… I have to stand by Dime & his brother, it’s what I know is right.

On Dimebag and his death
Metal Monthly: How did you meet Darrell ? Was it love at first sight?

Rita: Haha! Hell no! I pushed him off his bicycle at the bike trails when we were 8 yrs. old!

Metal Monthly: How long were you together?

Rita: Well for almost 20 yrs, but we knew each other for 30! He’s only 10 days older than me! Which he like ta use when we disagreed! He’d say,”Hey now! I’m ten days older than you, so I’m the elder here!” hahaha, he always made me laugh!

Metal Monthly: Did you hear about how David Lee Roth Told Zakk Wylde to get off his Fuckin stage during Van Halen Rehearsals?

Rita: Yeah Scott Ian told me about it, he was there… hahaha… hey man that’s Dave for ya! He’s still the king!

Metal Monthly: Many People do not know that Eddie Van Halen Buried one of his Guitars with Darrell, this is true right? And like 20 bottles of Crown Royal?

Rita: Hahaha! There’s a few bottles of 7 up in there too! My boy luvvvs Seagram’s! But yeah… Vinnie & I were trying to figure out which guitar & about that time Ed called… he asked me on the phone if there was anything he could do & I said ‘Yes’ as a matter of fact there is… “Can you stripe him a yellow & black guitar?” He said, “Are you sure you don’t want the red, black & white?” I said, “No… Dime told me the yellow & black is the shit! It’s the toughest lookin’! He always thought that! We had just seen Van Halen in Midland, TX a few weeks earlier & that was the first time Dime ever got to meet Eddie Van Halen! They hung out before & after the show! Dime even got to play on his rig at sound check! He was like a kid in a candy store… the way his eyes were lit up… He told me later in the limo, which Van Halen provided… how cool is that! Anyway he leaned over & looked me right in the eyes & said, “If I died tonight it wouldn’t matter, cause I’ve done everything now, I’ve met Eddie VanHalen!” & he had the biggest smile on his face… he was so happy! But shit! I strayed! I’m the world’s worst about telling 10 stories at once! Haha! Back to Ed… He said, ‘Ok’ that he would be down in a couple of days. When Ed came in at the viewing he had the guitar, but it wasn’t the guitar we expected… he told Vinnie & I that ‘Dime was an original & only an original deserves the original!’ He popped open the case & there it was… his original 79 still with the rusted set of strings on it! It was so amazing!!! I took it in to Dime & I said, “See baby you didn’t get a replica! You got THE one” & I gave him a kiss on the forehead & place it in there with ‘em… Ed was awesome & I thank him still!

On Friends
Metal Monthly: I know that you have seen many good times, and some pretty funny shit, is there any other character out there that could bring it as much as Darrell? Like Zakk Wylde or anyone else who comes to mind?

Rita: Man I hate to say it, with out sounding biased, but in the almost words of Fucking Hostile, “He stands alone!” (Vince!… then you have that killer drum roll… haha) Sorry that song just went off in my skull! But to pick some very special people that I’ve had the privilege to become friends with… I’d have to say Corey Taylor is a pretty entertaining cat, he’s usually right off the cuff… hmmm… & Dave Grohl has a lil’ Dimebag up in ‘em… Grohl always has a big smile on his face & is one of the best host, very tentative! Always makes sure everyone is having a good time! Positive energy just flows off him! I have to say all the Hell Yeah boys & their crew… as far as bringin’ it! They do a damn good job, but then again most of them come from the school of Dimebag! Haha! What can I say?

This is a really good interview that is not too old, read the entire thing.

Hard Attack’s 3rd Annual March of DIMEDAY celebrates the life and music of the late guitar legend Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott. Its 24 hours of all things Dimebag: besides clips from the man himself, it’ll also feature anything Dime would want to hear if he had his own satellite radio station. You’ll hear tons of Pantera, Damageplan, Rebel Meets Rebel, and Dime approved bands such as Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Black Label Society, Kiss, Shadows Fall, Van Halen, Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax and more! Plus, exclusive and candid Dime stories from friends, family and the Hard Attack staff. Happy Birthday Darrell, your music and spirit forever lives on! Starts Monday at 3 am ET through Tuesday at 3 am ET.

I don’t post a lot of news and articles about Dimebag or his death because I think he should be remembered. We can remember him and not exploit him and his memory. Rest in peace means just that. We don’t need to find a reason every ten minutes to throw some kind of party or Dimebag memorial. Anniversaries like his birthday (as Sirius is celebrating) and for lack of better terms, death day, are truly the only days we need to remember. I wish the media would stop feeding off his death already.

New Orleans metal act, Down has released the name a date for their upcoming record entitled Down III:Over The Under. This is the third record for the Louisiana band, featuring former Pantera (Superjoint Ritual) front man Phil Anselmo, former Pantera Bass player Rex Brown, Drummer Jimmy Bower of Eye Hate God, C.O.C. guitar/vocals Pepper Keenan, and Crowbar Guitarist Kirk Windstien. Below is an excerpt of an Interview conducted by Full Metal Racket with Pepper Keenan.

Keenan: Our main goal was to try and take these ideas and all the things we had been through personally and collectively [including Hurricane Katrina and death of Dimebag] and really try and focus on trying to stay positive and not using these negative things to write songs. So we were really trying to take that attitude and trying to do something like that, and I think we really pulled it off. I think it’s a huge-sounding record, and the songs are big and the topics are big. I think it’s something… regardless of if it’s the hurricane or whatever you’re going through in your life, I think these songs as a unit I’m very proud of, and they stand up for what we’re trying to do. And I think it helps anybody who, like I did when I was younger, finds solace in music. I think it’s one of those records.

“One of our main issues on this album was that there wasn’t really that many places to record that were left in New Orleans. So we made the decision to go to Los Angeles to do it. Plus we kind of needed to get out of New Orleans for a while. That way we could just go somewhere different and just focus completely on the music and not be going home to destroyed houses or dealing with the daily grind of that. So we went to California and we did the record out there and we’ll be finished with the record in about a week and a half.”
