There is so many great bands releasing new albums this year it’s amazing. Just to name a few, you have young talented thrashers, Black Tide to release their Debut album Light From Above that I think will surprise a lot of people and blow them away. You have All That Remains that will be releasing their follow up to The Fall Of Ideals this summer, you have Children Of Bodom’s Blooddrunk and supposedly in September we will see the new Metallica record.

Those are just a few that we have to look forward to. Some that have already been released or also released soon are Meshuggah’s new one obZen that comes out tomorrow on Nuclear Blast , Death Angel just released Killing Season, Byzantine put out Oblivion Beckons, a great record right before breaking up and Grief Of War, the Japanese thrashers released their 3 year old debut record for the first time in America on Prosthetic Records. Testament will be releasing their next record The Formation OF Damnation on April 29th. You can hear a song More Than Meets The Eye (No it’s not the Transformers theme song) from The Formation Of Damnation on Thier Official Myspace site. Damn the list goes on and on! Disturbed is releasing a new record this year as well and we are supposed to see a new Slipknot record too. Both of which bands are going to be on the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Tour. Light This City will be back in the studio some time this year. I’m not sure if the new record will be released in ‘08 or not but I’ll be checking on that from time to time. Lastly for all you haters out there, Trivium is supposed to release something new this year as well.

It used to be that a band would take 3 or four years before releasing a new record and often times it would be either well worth the wait or a substandard piece of cat shit. Now days metal bands take two years at the most and release great recording with no filler what so ever. And even between you have side projects from members of the bands that make for great head banging.

So in summary, 2008 is going to be a kick ass year in Metal!

Sometimes you come to like the things you previously disliked and you have to take it with a grain of salt, swallow your pride and enjoy it. So this is what I’ve been into lately.
Top Ten Songs

Progenies Of The Great Apocalypse – Dimmu Borgir (I love the symphonic aspects of this band)

One By One – Immortal (One of my new favorite Black Metal Bands)

Angel’s Don’t Kill – Children Of Bodom (My favorite from Hatecrew Deathroll)

And Death In My Arms – All That Remains (This entire CD is awesome)

The Eagle – Light This City (One of many great songs on Facing The Thousand)

Dethharmonic – Dethklok (It’s Dethklok, nothing more to say)

Skulls – The Misfits (I’m always liking older Misfits tunes)

Jam packed with kick ass metal. Hands down the best label anniversary compilation

Children Of Bodom – Hate Crew Deathroll A new favorite of mine.
Dethklok – The Dethalbum I wasn’t sure what to think when I heard about this show, but when you hear the music you instantly fall in love with it all.

Dimmu Borgir – In Sorte Diaboli I’m still not a big fan of the gimmick behind Black Metal but I have come to love the sound and Dimmu Borgir Mix the symphony with the devil’s music…and it’s cool!

All That Remains – This Darkened Heart I can not say enough good things about this band and honestly a lot of you are probably tired of hearing me talk about them…be prepared for more.

Testament – The Best of Testament When I picked up this one I was just ashamed that I went this long without listening to Testament. Sometimes It’s amazing how you miss a band like this for so long.

grief of WAR – A Mounting Crisis Another new overseas favorite. Japan’s grief of WAR are phenoms at bringing back the old school thrash sound. Nothing polished and painted pretty here. Just thrashing.

Burn The Priest I haven’t the slightest idea why I have been into this one as of late. The vocals are incomprehensible but the music rips!

Jazz and metal would normally not mix well…except when done by Yakuza!

Almost immediately after forming, the band quickly started rehearsing to develop and refine their sound through a series of pre-productions recordings. Releasing the self titled Grief Of War demo in 2003 the band began receiving positive reaction about the release from a handful of CD shops and fanzines inside their native Japan, prompting the quartet to being energetically playing live in June 2004. Through this, the band began gaining an increasing fan base throughout Tokyo through uncountable tours and live dates, including playing together with Danish metal band Mnemic in March of 2005.

Grief Of War Finally unleashed the band’s debut full length, A Mounting Crisis…As Their Fury Got Released through hometown label Yggr Drasill Records in May 2005.

Self Described as “Samurai Crunch, ” Grief Of War aims to capture the title as the heir of real traditional thrash metal in the golden 80’s, through a deal with Prosthetic Records set to begin with the release of A Mounting Crisis…As Their Fury Got Released outside Japan on February 19, 2008

So there I was holding this CD fresh from the mail and not knowing what the hell I’m about to here because honestly I have not been impressed with metal from Japan. I read the band info that came with the cd and now I really don’t know what to expect. So I give it a shot and insert it into my PC.

HOLY CRAP! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It was like taking a trip back to 1987. To best describe the sound in my opinion would be if you were to mix up Sepultura’s Schizophrenia, Slayer’s Hell Awaits, Megadeth So Far So Good/ KIMB, and Metallica’s Ride The Lightening with e hint of Older Testament. The guitar work is fast, thrashy and not too churched up if you know what I mean. The vocals are fast, reverberated and you don’t sense a hint of Asian accent you usually hear in Japanese metal. The solos are good and well executed. There is plenty of change of timing an rhythm to keep it interesting. The drums are simple thrash and no double bass is present. Lyrically it’s not over-thought and proverbial. You don’t need a dictionary and thesaurus to figure out the messages here. If your into old school thrash and want to hear something new that sounds old, then check out grief Of WAR.
