From director CT:

“The film is about underground heavy bands south of the Mason Dixon. It will have intense live performances from some of the crustiest, doomiest, and most progressive of heavy bands from the south. As will include interviews from the dirtiest and smelliest musicians, promoters, and fans from this genre about living and growing up in the bible belt, and other beautiful shit hole christian ran towns, as well as drugged out road stories, and other uncouth happenings.”

Razor Of Occam: Homage To Martyrs (Metal Blade Records)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. I’m not Irish but is there a better reason to drink beer and eat corned beef on a Tuesday? There is quite a few new metal albums out today. I’ve had a chance to listen to a few, so I’ll throw a few words in for each.

Razor Of Occam: Homage To Martyrs (Metal Blade Records)

Sounds Like: Black Metal, only better and with a little taste of death and some really ripping solos. If you like traditional black metal but you’re looking for something with a little more substance, Homage To Martyrs is the way to go.

Metal Martyr Rating: 4/5

Into The Moat: The Campaign (Metal Blade Records)

Sounds Like: White Chapel and The Acacia Strain with some cool progressive acoustic parts and a few jazzy, mathcore overtones. It’s good but it sounds so similar to the two bands mentioned. They’ve been around longer than white chapel but are a few years behind The Acacia Strain.

Metal Martyr Rating: 3/5

Kylesa: Static Tensions (Prosthetic Records)

Sounds like: Your neighbors pounding on the walls, telling you to turn it down. A heard of elephants, stampeding with a sense of grace and melody. Loud and abrasive but extremely enjoyable, like every Kylesa album.

Metal Martyhr Rating 4/5

Savannah, Georgia’s Kylesa bring the noise once again with their third release on Prosthetic Records, Static Tensions. When I say noise I don’t necessarily mean noise in a bad way, I totally mean it in a brass knuckles to the temple, good way.

Dual down tuned guitars make for a sludgy, psychedelic yet bright mix with an onslaught of heavy riffs that are simplistic but catchy enough to really enjoy. The guitars also have a sense of melody that accentuates Static Tensions with a show of progression from their last album Time Will Fuse It’s Worth.

In addition with their duel guitars comes the duel vocals of Phillip Cope and Laura Pleasants that hit you in the face full force. More of a yell than screaming or singing, they also hold that sense of melody that without, would probably sound more like an amateur band just trying to sound heavy without feeling. Kylesa may not exactly be technical, but they are far from amateur.

Making the bottom end even deeper and heavier is the bass and dual drums of Eric Hernandez and Carl McGinley. Javier Villegas is listed as the Bass player on the album but I see reports that Corey Barhorst is playing live. The lyrics on Static Tensions are intelligent, yet a great definition of simplistic artistry.

If you dig fellow Georgians Torche, then you will most definitely enjoy Kylesa and Static Tensions. If you were fortunate enough to catch both bands live at Scion Rock Fest then you know what I’m talking about. I wasn’t fortunate enough to make it to Scion and I’m still kicking myself in the ass for it.

Static Tensions was produced by Philip Cope. The cover art was done by John Dyer Baizley. You may be familiar with from bands like Pig Destroyer, Baroness (whom he is also the frontman), Darkest Hour and Skeletonwitch, among a few other bands.

Catch Kylesa on tour with Mastodon and Intronaut this summer and later this month at SXSW.

KYLESA scheduled to enter the studio
An update from Savannah, Ga.’s KYLESA: “It’s been a while since our last update so here you go: We’ve been writing a new record over the past few months and we’re about to head to the Jam Room studio on Monday [July 21] to begin tracking. We’re excited to record a new album since it’s been two years since we recorded ‘Time Will Fuse its Worth.’ It’s hard to believe it’s been that long!
The CD will be released on Prosthetic Records in early ‘09 and the vinyl version will come out around the same time. Phillip [Cope, Kylesa guitarist/vocalist (Baroness, Black Tusk)] will be producing the record. We’ll send a few updates and photos from the studio.”

In other KYLESA record news, Red Cobalt Industries is producing a very limited alternate CD version of ‘Time Will Fuse its Worth’ for a Japanese release. The packaging was totally re-designed by Laura and is loaded with extra things including a poster of the “Double Skull” tee shirt design by John Baizley (Baroness, Darkest Hour, Torche, Skeletonwitch) and a sticker by Santos. It will be a sort of matchbook digipack with foil stamping and metallic inks. It should be in production very soon, and more details will be available soon. Once released, KYLESA plans on touring Japan for the first time, playing shows with Birushanah, Coffins, and several other bands. More details will be available as they are confirmed.

Most recently completing a string of dates co-headlining the East Coast with The Ocean, also featuring Lair of The Minotaur and labelmates Withered, KYLESA’s last release was ‘Time Will Fuse Its Worth,’ which saw a fall 2006 release through Prosthetic. The band also contributes a version of Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive” which will appear on a forthcoming Syd Barrett tribute album that will soon see release through Dwell Records.
