This time of year there is never a surplus of time for anyone. Besides the snail speed flow of report worthy metal news this week, time just hasn’t been on my side. To keep things short, here are some significant things that went on the Metal since Friday.

Machine Head’s Phil Demmel collapsed on stage again on Friday. This is the third time it’s happened and the second time it’s happened this year. Machine head has canceled the last tow shows on this leg of their tour and will be heading back top the states. Phil suffers from a rare heart condition called Cardiogenic Syncope. Wish him well as Machine Head will be heading back out on tour on Wednesday with Metallica and The Sword.

Lacuna Coil has revealed the name of their next album as “Shallow Life” which will come out some time in 2009. For the record I, like many others still find Christina Scabbia extremely sexy.

Chimaira is in the mixing stage of their follow up to Resurrection. I still haven’t heard of a release date for this yet.

Job For A Cowboy parts way with guitarist Ravi Bhadriraju just as they’re are getting ready to hit the recording studio. No word a yet who will replace Bhadri…Bhadrij…Bhadji…him.

Haste The Day has lost their drummer. Devin Chaulk has decided to move on after 8 years with the band and pursue active ministry with his family.

Say It Ain’t So, Dave…Rumors are starting to flow over the net that the next run for Megadeth’s Gigantour will have bands on the bill such as Avenged Sevenfold and Bullet For My Valentine. I’ve never been to a Gigantour and unless it swings by my way I probably won’t go to one anytime soon. With that said I still feel for anyone that wants to go to see Megadave play and has to sit through those two bands. Let’s just hope that it’s a bad rumor. Hit up the Megadeth Forums and beg and plead with Dave not to let this travesty happen!

I’m going to break this down by single bands and not so much the tour or show name. I saw a good amount of shows this year. In fact I went to more shows just this year than I ever have in my whole life before before this year. This year has had some great shows come my way and a few I have had to travel a few hours for. Through some of these shows I’ve learned of bands and learned became a bigger fan of other bands. I’d say one of the best ways to discover new bands is to get to a show early enough before the headlining band comes on and catch the opening acts. With that said, let me get to 10 of my favorite bands I saw live in 2008.

Carcass Reunion: This was like a dream come true. I didn’t think I would ever get to see Carcass play live after becoming a fan in 1993. Hopefully we will see more of this in the future in the U.S.

Hatebreed: One of the most energetic shows from a crowd I have seen down here. Beside being dry-humped by some over enthusiastic, sweaty dude behind me, I had a great time and it was a very memorable show.

Opeth: Sold out show, amazing show. I wish they had played some more acoustic stuff…or I wish I had stuck around for the second hour of their set to catch any acoustic stuff they may have played.

Firewind: Powerful live show. Guitars and vocals that just make the show. I wasn’t really a fan of this band before they went on stage but I was eager to see them live for some reason. When they took the stage I immediately though it was kind of cheesy…for about 20 seconds. After that it was total amazement.

The Sword: I think they sound just as good, if not better live. Guitar driven metal that is simplistic and catchy enough to keep everything interesting.

Early Man: A great, thrashy show.

Suffocation: Caught them on the Carcass reunion. The death metal and deathcore bands of today could learn a thing or two from these guys…like writing your song so you can play them live.

Machinehead: This is the second time I’ve seen Machinhead, but the first time in over 10 years. They still know how to rock the stage and were really cool during signings.

Slipknot: I’ve waited 8 years to see these guys live. A lot of people say they don’t put out the energy like they used to but I think they put on a better show than what they used to from the videos I’ve seen. Jumping around onstage is cool and everything…but I want to hear quality music too.

All That Remains: Twice this year I’ve seen ATR and neither time have I been disappointed. Phil knows how to work the stage and Oli’s nimble fingers make for some beautiful solos.

There is my top ten. Here are a few other mentions

Loudest Live Show

Torche (opened for The Sword)

Strangest Live Act

The Monotonix – Starts out kind of fun and wacky and then just goes overboard and stupid really quickly.

Pissed That I Missed Shows (Shows that came around and I wanted to see but missed for one reason or another)

Kataklysm

In Flames, Gojira

Obviously this can be wrong in my opinion for a lot of reasons. But first read this (From Machine Head Forums):

A couple weeks ago I bought the war T-shirt from the machine head store and I got it in the mail yesterday and I wore it to school today. The shirt that says "war, lies, fear, change" on the back. Well, when I got to school today, my English teacher told me I couldn’t wear it and I had to call home to get a different shirt.

well, I had no idea, but her son is in Iraq right now. I mean, I know it has a lot to do with politics and everything. but it’s not like I was talking about it or anything. Because they tell us at school that we’re not supposed to talk about religion or politics. but half the kids in that school don’t really give a shit or they’re just too dumb to know anything. Did they have any right in telling me to take it off ?

First off, it’s a T-shirt with four words on it. Yes it may be a political statement and it doesn’t matter if the teacher has a son, daughter, or dog in Iraq. How the hell does a school ask people not to talk politics? This country runs on politics. Do they even teach politics and if not how do they teach economics, history or U.S. government? I can understand religion not being talked about in school, but politics? Again, this is a shirt with four words on it and no obscene words at all. That’s bullshit, plain and simple. So if she were to wear a T-shirt that said "Let Freedom Ring", would she have had to take it off? Of course not, even though it’s a political statement. Are Christian kids told to put their cross necklaces inside their shirts? Probably not, but if it was a peace sign I bet they might? Schools and policies are all fuckered up these days.

I can understand the need for perhaps a mild dress-code in schools. Band T-shirts, unless they present something obscene, have foul language or vulgar statements on it, should not be an issue. This is a pretty tame shirt if you ask me. You can oppose the war without opposing the people that are sent over there to fight. If I was this child’s parent I would definitely have a meeting with the teacher and superintendent about this. If people are allowed to wear the little yellow ribbon pins on their ties and lapels, then that is just as much a political statement than a simple shirt that protests the war.

Some other ass on the message board complained about uniforms, to which this has no bearing, because if you don’t like wearing a uniform than you should try to transfer to a less uppity school. When I went to high school most of the douches in my class were the new age dead heads that wore Grateful Dead T-shirts. If they had something like a marijuana leaf on them, they would be asked to change it. That’s understandable, I don’t feel that I have to explain. People are just too god damned sensitive these days. I think I’m going to buy that T-shirt now. This is a case of denial of freedom of speech. If the school wants to put a policy in effect they need to draw out some details instead of making it possible for people to censor simple, commonly used words.

However to close this out I do feel that at no time you should let your child wear an Avenged Sevenfold T-shirt to school…that’s just stupid.

Buy That T-Shirt Hear and wear it proudly to school every day for a week!

Machine Head’s Phil Demmel passed out at last night’s Mayhem fest performance right towards the end of their set last night at The Nissan Pavilion in Virginia.
I’m not trying to give a lesson in hydration here, but too much alcohol and not enough water in the sun and humidity can creep up on you out of nowhere. Dehydration can set in long before you actually pass out from it and it’s tough to get your body to absorb water quickly when it sets in. Even if Phil had been drinking water during his set, he could have already been dehydrated to the point where he needed rest, a cool place and water. It’s tough for people to acclimate themselves to the weather when they are bouncing all over the U.S., and the drinking these guys do on top of that just sets them up to be a heat casualty.

Can’t wait to see what Machine head has next on their agenda.

Lajon: Well, you know, everything is in the making and there’s a lot of big things going on. There’s a lot of bands calling and calling bands. I want to just say for the record that I hated that we were not able to be able to do the Mayhem tour. I was so excited and we all were as a band. Financially, we would’ve just — the ship had taken on water and if we had done that it would have really affected households. So we had to go down another avenue. Hopefully in the future that tour will go forward because I would love to tour with those bands again. SLIPKNOT, DISTURBED, which I’m sure we’ll be touring with those guys in the future anyway. I mean, all of the bands on there. Who else? MASTODON, the guys from Atlanta. I mean, give me a break. MACHINE HEAD. But hopefully we’ll be able to take a tour out in the future and play again. I hope all well for that tour. It’s gonna be great anyway.

Slayer wins the Grammy for Best Metal Performance. Now it’s got all sorts of people on Blabbermouth arguing who should have won and even people going on to say that Slayer is not metal. One fool, probably the same douche that has been here a few times even went on to ask how Slayer won for “Metal” performance and then said “Death To False Metal“. WTF?

You know, this song that they were nominated for (Final Six) was on the re-release and a lot of people think perhaps that should not have qualified them for it. I can agree, but there is just something you have to look at. These awards and nominations are brought about by people in the music business that don’t actually listen to the bands as fans. We all know there was a great amount of metal that was released last year and if you feel it necessary to argue about all this crap then whatever. I didn’t think Christ Illusion was a great record and I made an effort not to buy the re-release. It wasn’t a bad record though.

Shadows Fall, Threads of Life wasn’t an epic album to me either. It was a good album, but yet just another Shadows Fall Album.

Can’t say much about Machinhead’s The Blackening or King Diamond’s Give Me Your Soul. I just never got around to checking out either but I heard that The Blackening was great and Give Me Your Soul was just O.K.

As I Lay Dying’s An Ocean Between Us was a great album. A hell of a step up whether you like them or not. Perhaps it wasn’t “evil” enough for some people. I think Within Destruction was a far better track than Nothing Left but that was just me.

So argue what you want about this metal Grammy award. Tomorrow morning you’re not going to wake up and think Christ Illusion is better or worse than it was yesterday just because they won a Grammy. You’re not going to have any less respect for Slayer because they won a mainstream award…twice. And if you do you’re just as retarded as the rest of the “underground” turds. If it was some European Black Metal band everyone would be saying the same shit. So Slayer won a Grammy. Congrats, I hope none of you are going to lose sleep over King Diamond or Machinehead losing out. It’s not that big of a deal.

Look at the bright side, Amy Winehouse can go pawn her Grammy’s when she hits rock bottom and needs a fix. Bitch makes me sick!
