Imagine that you somehow get stranded on a deserted island, sorta like that TV show Lost…except without polar bears, crazy people and shit. So you’restranded there and you just happen to have 10 cd’s there to listen to. If you could have your pick of ten cd’s to have with you, loaded on your IPod, whatever, what would they be? This was a tough choice but here is mine.
1. Megadeth: Peace Sells
2. Pink Floyd: Wish You Were Here
3. Black Sabbath: Paranoid
4. Danzig: III How The Gods Kill
5. The Misfits: Collection 1
6. Pantera: Vulgar Display Of Power
7. Lamb Of God: Ashes [...]
Post from: Metal Martyr

9. Marvin Gaye Collection (2003)
10. Led Zeppelin: 4

I mixed it up a bit because I wouldn’t want just metal to listen to, I’d go crazy. Besides, you need a little Marvin Gaye cause you never know if there is going to be some one else stranded with you and no one sets the mood like Marvin.

In some news lately, Korn revealed that they are going to be working on a cover album. Cover albums are great because we all love to hear our favorite bands covering other people songs…but why does it seem that bands tend to put out cover albums when all else is in the crapper?

Let me give you a run-down, and I may miss some so feel free to let me know which ones I missed. Ok, so Korn are going to be doing a cover album. Ozzy did one last year…it was mediocre. Guns and Roses did the Spaghetti incident which had a few good ones on it. Metallica did some awesome covers on Garage Inc. Slayer’s Undisputed Attitude covered some great old school punk and cross-over songs. Megadeth released Hidden Treasures which was covers and songs from movie sound tracks…I liked it.

Over all, these cover records haven’t really bombed, except maybe Ozzy’s. I wasn’t rushing out to buy that one but I still respect the blabbering “Geezer”. Over the years some metal bands have covered some kick ass songs. Soulfly did Smoke on The Water, a timeless classic with a hell of a kick. Mushroomhead did Seal’s Crazy which was crazy but it actually made me like the song…their version. Deadsy (don’t care for this band) covered Tom Sawyer from Rush, Korn covered “Word Up” and Slayer ripped through Iron Butterfly. And Lastly and perhaps least is Type O’s version of Summer Breeze. There are a load of others that I dont have time to name right now.

When Bands do cover songs a lot of thought goes into which song they do. They don’t want to do a song that everybody and everybody has done because when it comes out most people are more “wowed” by a cover of a song that they haven’t heard in awhile and don’t expect to hear from a metal band. Imagine King Diamond covering Marvin Gaye’s classic Mother. That’s what has to be done. I think Korn have picked some great tunes to cover and it may just be interesting enough. It has been mentioned that they covered Morbid Angel’s God Of Emptiness…we’ll see.
