Originally released in 2003, The Soundtrack To The Apocalypse is a must collectible for any Slayer fan. The box is kind of cool and it’s shaped and opens like an Ammo can. You get a small slayer tapestry, a mock Slayer concert pass, 4 cd’s of music and a DVD with some old school live slayer and other rare footage.

Box sets these days as I mentioned with the Megadeth Warchest, are not like the box sets of old. They are more or less compilations of some of the bands greatest hits, live tracks and rarities. For the price the Slayer box set costs you would think that you would get every slayer song since the beginning. You don’t. In fact you get a lot of songs you already have and some live tracks (Live Slayer is always good though) and some demo tracks and stuff like that. No you know what your paying for when you buy it. It’s all in black and white on the outside of the box, so there is no deception.

My suggestion is this: If you want the box set for the music then buy the smaller version of the Soundtrack To The Apocalypse. If you want the box set for your own collection and fan Value then by all means, buy the Ammo Can Box. The smaller set doesn’t come with the Live tracks disk in the Faux Blood sleeve, but thats something I could live without and save some money. I had the big box set at one time a few years ago and times were tough so I sold it on Ebay. I ripped all the songs to my PC but I do plan on replacing it one day with the smaller of the two. You can find new and used sets for a pretty fair price these days

I give The Soundtrack To The Apocalypse 3 horns.

Dave Mustaine has been rather tame for awhile now and you all know as well as I do that no matter how much you love Megadeth and Dave, he never fails to say something so off the wall that it makes you wonder why you like him. Dave speaks his mind. Even when his mind is a bit twisted and all tangled up with his ego. In case you missed it, Blabbermouth.net posted part of a recent interview from Revolver Magazine. Here is a few questions and answers.

Revolver: How do you feel when fans say MEGADETH’s best lineup was you with drummer Nick Menza, gutiarist Marty Friedman, and bassist David Ellefson?

Mustaine: Well, they’re entitled to their opinion, totally, and if they’re talking from a music point of view, that’s understandable, because there’s only been one record so far with the new lineup. But what they have to realize is that I sang almost every single note of Marty Friedman’s guitar solos, and I wrote the majority of Nick’s drum parts, and I wrote almost every bass note that Ellefson played. It’s just a matter of these guys getting into the groove.

Revolver: How is it between you and METALLICA’s Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield since shooting “Some Kind of Monster”?

Mustaine: How’s what? I have no idea what you’re talking about. You mean as friends? Nothing. I haven’t said one syllable to them. I think it’s probably pretty disappointing, all of this. We have the same demons. We suffer from bullshit, and you don’t talk to somebody. It’s fine. And there’s enough people in the world that are tired of this story, me included. God, it’s how many years old? 30 years old?

You can read the rest of the excerpt at Blabbermouth.net. Dave goes on about Dissection’s front man talking trash about him and how he would have whipped his ass because he’s got black belts and blah, blah, blah. Dave never ceases to amaze me sometimes. Just when you think he has grown out of his egotistical shell he turns around and spews garbage like this. I can however understand him being tired of the friggin Metallica question.

The entire interview will be in next months Revolver Magazine where you can check out that and a bunch of crap about shitty bands like Avenged Sevenfold, The Used and Him. That magazine is going downhill fast…………..

I’m sitting here going back and forth through my Megadeth MP3s from the Warchest songs to the original from the cds. I know a lot of people are skeptical when it comes to re-releases and remasters cds but if your Megadeth cd’s are old and/or scratched and your looking for an excuse to replace them then you should look no further.

Dave Mustaine remastered all the old cds (from Risk on back to Peace Sells) about 2 and a half years ago. I picked up Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying, but that was the only one. It was pretty cool. I say [...]
Post from: Metal Martyr

I’m sitting here going back and forth through my Megadeth MP3s from the Warchest songs to the original from the cds. I know a lot of people are skeptical when it comes to re-releases and remasters cds but if your Megadeth cd’s are old and/or scratched and your looking for an excuse to replace them then you should look no further.

Dave Mustaine remastered all the old cds (from Risk on back to Peace Sells) about 2 and a half years ago. I picked up Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying, but that was the only one. It was pretty cool. I say was because I ripped it to my hard drive and traded it in towards some other stuff awhile back. Anyway it is pretty amazing how Dave remastered the songs and made them sound a million times better. I stressed this awhile back when I talked about My Darkest Hour from the Warchest. Some people like that old raw sound from the eighties. I do to, but I also like a fine tuned song. Especially when it’s something that I listen to and say “This could be better if it had been tweaked a bit”.

I gotta take back my rather mediocre review on the Warchest because the more I listen to the songs and the other stuff on it, the more I like it. All the older songs are remastered and sound better. The live tracks are great and the demos make you “double take” them. If you don;t feel like buying the Warchest, then at least check out the remastered Peace Sells and So far So Good cd’s. You’ll be glad you did.

He is such a perfectionist. While most of the time I say “Leave well enough alone” he knows how to take his old work and make it better. But how can you take a song like In My Darkest Hour and make it better? I thought the same thing until I heard the remastered version on the Megadeth Warchest.

The beginning of the song is different. The way it starts, the way it sounds. The reverb is more define the guitar is cleaner, Jr’s bass sounds more define and everything about the song seems reborn and even more amazing than the first time you heard it and marveled in it infinite greatness.

I hate to compare (Or do I?) Metallica and Megadeth because both have written so many great songs but this is by all means the epic defining moment where you see what Metallica lost by firing Dave. Metallica have a lot of great songs as do Megadeth, but Dave has the ability to write one every now and then that stands out from all the rest like a turd in a punch bowl. Songs that are burned into your memory for years.

When I started the Warchest contest I saw people over and over say Tornado Of Souls, and honestly for a long time I have forgotten about Tornado Of Souls. This sparked my interest in the song again and I had to hear it again all the way through and really listen and I’ll be damned…this song brings back memories of my first car. A 1979 Plymouth Volarie. Such a piece of shit car that I used to rock this song out to back in ‘93 on my way to work as a dishwasher in a small town restaurant With the Sony Disc-man and the car adapter kit, a shitty carburetor and no A/C. My friend and I shoplifting cassette tapes from Fay’s drug store…those were the days! (While these days I don’t approve or condone shoplifting we all have stupid moments in our lives that we look back upon and regret.) but it was fun…til I got caught. Thats changed a lot of things.

December is coming and with that comes the end of year prize pack. I’ve got a bunch of cd’s in it right now and I’m trying to add what I can and see what else I can throw in there.

The Metal Martyr sound track was kinda cool, didn’t get rid of as many as I thought I would and I have not heard back from the ones I sent one to except for one person…so what the hell does that mean?

Free Download Friday started last week and I’m trying to get something in the works right now…but I’m waiting on word from the top to see if it’s possible…we’ll see and I’ll break the news as soon as I know something.

The Megadeth Warchest Contests is still a go and you can click the link on the sidebar to enter. Till then I’m still kinda sampling the thing and this morning I decided to take a good look at the DVD and I can tell you that this dvd is not disappointing at the least.

Recorded live at Hammersmith Odeon, London, England September 30th, 1992. With such classic songs such as Holy Wars, Peace sells and In My Darkest Hour, this10 song live DVD rocks!

Perhaps the best line-up Megadeth ever had in my opinion. Dave, Jr., Menza, And Friedman never let down. Bottom line, the DVD in this box set is awesome. Here are a few things I want to say about this line-up though.

Nick Menza is probably one of the most under-rated and under publicized drummers ever. He never got enough credit in the world of metal.

Marty Friedman is an amazing guitar player as we all know, but when I was watching this DVD I noticed how strangely he picks the strings. Now I noticed this a little in the Holy Wars video but this DVD shows close ups and he has a realy wired yet somehow effective picking styles. If you ever have a chance to check out some of Marty’s solo stuff I highly suggest it.

Lastely, and I’m not trying to kiss Dave’s ass here cause I’ve said this before, but Dave Mustaine has got to be one of the greatest rhythm/lead/vocalist in metal. What other Vocalist pulls of riffs like he does while singing and without looking down at the fretboard and rip through the solos that he does?

As for Jr… Dave Ellefson is just the bass player for Megadeth. Never thought he was a phenom or anything but bass players never get the credit they deserve. I honestly don’t know why Mustaine let him go in the first place but I’m sure theres a madness behind Dave’s madness…don’t correct me, thats how I wanted to say it!

So its been hyped a lot and for good reason….It’s Megadeth. The days of box sets has changed. You no longer get every disk or close to it in box sets like you used to. There are a few out there that have that kind of stuff in it like The Misfits Box Set and others but some of those cost a bit more. The Slayer box set was cool, however disappointing. So with the Slayer box set a disappointment I prepared myself for this. While the Megadeth Warchest is a cool design with a lot of great information in its book, the rest of it is just alright.

Most of the songs are songs you probably already have on disk if your a long time fan and the rest is a bunch of demos and live tracks with a few audio interviews with Dave Mustaine. I shouldn’t talk badly about a Contest prize I’m giving away but I think this was rushed to be put together and more time went into the design of the package then the contents of the cd’s and DVD. Would you rather me Bullsh*t you and lie, or would you want the straight facts that I normally feed you?

The DVD is just that…a live DVD of a 1992 show in England, nothing really special. All this doesn’t change the fact that I’m still a big fan and I will be sad when I mail this off to the winner of the contest. I will be happy however to pass this on to someone who just may appreciate it more than I do. Fans are harder to satisfy these days and I say that because I am hard to satisfy when it comes to metal. I just wish more bands would put out box sets like the old where you would get just about every track from the band and you would sit back and listen in complete satisfaction.

I’m still a huge fan and always will be!
