Wow! What an overwhelming and tiring day I had yesterday. I got to Charlotte at about 3 pm after leaving work. Unfortunately I had to work a half a day, so needless to say I was already tired after the 3 hour drive.
Anyway, my first interview was with Black Tide. First let me say what a great group of fun guys they were for the interview. They “Devirginized” me so to speak. My first interview with a band…on video. Hopefully they didn’t think I was a complete tool. Not knowing much about the band, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

We briefly talked about touring with Ozfest, the upcoming record and what it’s like being on the road. As far as the show goes? Forget anything I said before about lyrical content of the songs. I shouldn’t really have made that call from hearing two songs off of the EP. I said before that musically they were phenomenal for their ages but I didn’t care for the lyrics. This is me once again pulling my foot out of my mouth (I’ve been doing that a lot lately). These guys are amazing! The show they put on was great. They are heading out to SXSW soon, so if you get a chance to check them out, DO SO!! I want to say thanks to the band, their tour manager Michael, and Carlos from Total Assault for setting that up for me. Buy the CD March 18th.

While I waited for my next interview I was inside the venue and got to see ATR do their sound check. It was really cool to get behind the scenes and see what goes into setting up for the show. Next I interviewed Laura Nichole and Ben Murray from Light This City. Two really great people. Ben and Laura were really nice and we had a real good interview in a restaurant while they ate. This band needs your support. They had a very short (To me, anyway) 30 minute opening set. Laura screamed her ass off and the band put on a hell of a show. Buy their CD’s and merch, go to their shows and get them out of that breadbox van and into an RV at least. They deserve it! Oh, and if you didn’t already know…Laura is a hottie!

My last interview before the show was with Phil Labonte from All That Remains, and I got a little of Mike Martin in there as well. When I got on the tour bus there were half empty and full bottles of Jim Beam everywhere. You’d swear they were endorsed by it. Phil was awesome. Again I hope I didn’t come off as a complete tool with him as well. I asked a few questions about the end of the tour, Halo, going into the studio, the superbowl and politics. I think Phil could go on for hours about politics. He knows his shit. When Mike came in to use their computer I kind of got him in on some of it towards the end and Phil and Mike had me laughing. I can only imagine how much fun it has to be on tour with these guys. At the end I got Mike Martin to take a picture of Phil and I (Thanks Mike!). I only stayed for 5 songs of the ATR set. I had a splitting headache and I was exhausted from the day so I took off a bit early. I wish I could have stayed for the whole set, but maybe next time.

I want to thank Bob at Prosthetic for setting everything up for me, the Band, Phil and Mike for taking the time for the interview and making me laugh and feel welcome. I want to give some credit to Nick, the assistant production manager, who was constantly running around making sure everything was in order for the show. The people behind the scenes don’t get enough credit. Keep an eye out his weekend for the interviews. I also have some band merch with autographs to give away. This was an awesome opportunity for me as my first interviews and I hope to be able to do it some more.

It’s my time to bore you once more. Since this blog started, I have been introduced to so much great metal. For the past, let’s say 4 years I have been in this slump. This neutral place in my metal fan-hood that left me bored with metal. I was bored with metal because I wasn’t pursuing new bands. I was tired of a new sh*tty band at every turn so I stopped looking for new bands and just sat and waited to see what my old favorites put out next. This started to become redundant, especially after Metallica’s St. Anger, Megadeth’s The System Has Failed and Danzig’s Circle Of Snakes had me less than impressed.

The only thing that curbed my boredom for the time being was Slipknot’s Volume 3(which I still got bored with after some time). And there after a few bands that came into my possession every now and then, like Trivium and Killswitch Engage. When I was interviewed for this blog I told the editor that I try to keep up with the new scene but I honestly was telling myself that I didn’t know what was what these days and I was going to have to work hard to find out what is currently out there and keep up with the news.

Long story, short. Since I started this blog I have found so many bands the are out there that I had been missing through the past years and rediscovering my lust for metal. I mean, let’s face it…there is so much garbage out there that sometimes you don’t know whats good and whats not. Obviously my opinion for whats good is always going to be different from some peoples and everyone isn’t going to like the same bands I like, but if it’s pure shit, annoying, not really metal (We’ll get into that later), or just some produced or invented band I’m going to speak out about it. Don’t let yourself get into a slump like I did, because there is always good bands out there that just need to be heard, don’t let it get you down. Metal is and always has been alive and well!

Metal Martyr’s first contest will be a people choice contest. This will be a comment contest meaning to enter into the contest you will need to comment at this post. Some specifics are involved in the comments in order to be qualified for the drawing in two weeks. Here is how its going to work:

I’m going to Build my own fantasy band. Sort of like the whole fantasy sports teams that a lot of people do online. You can pick up to 6 band members but no less than 4. A drummer, bass player, lead guitar, rhythm guitar, vocalist, and lastly an optional member such as a keyboard or additional guitar player. Your vocalist can be a rhythm guitar or bass player as well but they have to be this combo in real life. They have to be real musicians, any musician from any music era/genre dead or alive, and when you are finished you can name your band. Naming your band is optional because cool band names are hard to come by and I’d hate to see someone post a cool band name and someone else steal it for their own real band. Get your creative juices flowing and don’t hold back.

In two weeks I will put all the names of the people that comment into a hat, bowl or whatever and draw 1 winner. The winner will receive their choice of any CD they want that is $25.00 or less from amazon.com . This will be a U.S. resident only contest due to shipping costs and arrangements. When the winner is announced and contacted they will then let me know what CD they want by going to amazon.com and sending me the link of the CD they want that way there is no confusion or complaints. You must comment in this post. Multiple comments by a single person will not increase chances of winning, one entry per person. If the winner e-mails me the link and they want a Justin Timberlake CD they will automatically be disqualified and banned from Metalmartyr.com for life! I don’t care if you say it’s for your sister, those are the rules.

Ok, so here is my fantasy band:

Vocals: Phil Anselmo
Rhythm Guitar: Jeff Hanneman
Lead: Dimebag
Bass: Cliff Burton
Drums: Joey Jordison (this was a tough one, between Joey and Dave Lombardo)

Well, thats my “super group”. Lets see what you have and maybe you can get that CD that you’ve wanted for awhile and haven’t had the spare change for.
