Someone went on to say that CD’s cost too much. Yes, most of them do especially depending on where you buy them. They guestimated that the average cost of making a CD is about 3 to 5 dollars. Let me break a few things down for the thick sculled few that don’t understand the whole concept of recording, and printing a cd.

The material cost of a CD may only be about 3 dollars but the process cost is much higher. I don’t know what that exact amount is but here are some things to think about.

CDs are made of plastics which requires petroleum. With the rising cost of petro comes the rising cost of material and rising freight fuel fees.

There is a lot of overhead when it comes to the manufacturing business. There is a lot of cost, profit and loss potential everyday in the manufacturing industry. Between labor, rent, utilities, transportation, employees, legal fees, shipping, material and waste cost, its a tough business.

With the material and manufacturing aspect aside lets look at what may go into it before it goes into print. Studio fees are not cheap, legal fees and label fees are not cheap. Put all these things into consideration, the price of CD’s are almost fair…but the person selling the CD has to make a profit too. It’s called a business. Start your own business and see where all the money goes or refer back to the last paragraph of my last article.

Quite being a bunch of cheap bastards and start paying for the things you love!

In an article from Ultimate-guitar.com, a proposal is in the works to ban illegal down-loaders in the UK from internet access. It’s a pretty good concept and you should really read what stupid comments this can bring out of people. One guy even went on to say that $1.00 a song is too much and he’d be willing to pay $.50 as long as he can get it back when he gets bored with the song and deletes it. So I suppose he’s going to go to a car dealership and offer them half the price of the car and [...]
Post from: Metal Martyr

In an article from Ultimate-guitar.com, a proposal is in the works to ban illegal down-loaders in the UK from internet access. It’s a pretty good concept and you should really read what stupid comments this can bring out of people. One guy even went on to say that $1.00 a song is too much and he’d be willing to pay $.50 as long as he can get it back when he gets bored with the song and deletes it. So I suppose he’s going to go to a car dealership and offer them half the price of the car and is going to want them to pay him back the full sale price when he gets tired of the car and wants to trade it in?

The problem with tracking down illegal down-loaders is that it takes a lot of work to track down each and every individual who is doing it. If they tried tracking down each and every person who is currently doing it and has done it in the past they would be swamped with work and it would be financially impossible. That’s why they pick key individuals and make examples out of them. It’s a scare tactic because they know it’s probably not worth the money trying to track and prosecute each and every one. That’s not a subliminal message to keep doing it, either.

Will this work? It may, but there are some things that need to be put into place so the user can not just sign up for internet access through a different provider or under a different name. I don’t think there will ever be an end to Illegal downloading. There will always be someone out there doing it some way and there will always be someone to provide the people downloading illegally, a product.

Some even go on to say that the bands make plenty of money and them downloading a few songs doesn’t hurt the band any. Maybe if it was just one person doing it and not 6 million people. Do the math. The bands don’t make that much money from the tours and they certainly don’t make much from CD sales. There are bills that have to be paid by the bands. Between legal fees, agency fees, label fees, everything adds up. Especially if it’s a small band starting out these days in some shitty RV just trying to make the next show without breaking down on the side of some desolate highway between Bumfuk Egypt and Hells Half Acres.

In conclusion, look at it this way. Lets say you make $2000 month. Everyday 8 people steal $1.00 out of your checking account. Multiply that by 365 days and you get $2920. So out of $24,000 dollars a year people are stealing $2,920. Now pay all your bills, taxes, etc. and see what is left. Now Take all the earnings from CD sales and imagine how a band feels after all the bills are paid, the mouths are fed, and the label takes their share. Two things are left over. Jack and Sh*t.

Here is an excerpt from an old interview from Metalupdate.com. Metal Update talks to Lamb Of God’s Chris Adler on the Napster debate. I wonder if his views have changed since this interview?

“MU: What is your opinion on the Napster debate?

CA: I think it is the record industry and the record company’s business to make money. From my perspective, as a musician, I’d love to be able to make a living, and I’d love to be able to continue doing this. But from my experience with music I’ve learned that this is not what pays the bills, and I’m lucky to be able to continue doing this. I’m not necessarily doing it for the
money. I’m in it to be creative and to make the music that I wanted to hear as a listener. We’re very happy with the album because it reflects what we, as listeners wanted to hear but nobody else was doing.”

MU: How does that translate to a position, pro or con, on file-sharing?

CA: Well, from my perspective, any avenue that is available to me, that allows me to get my music out to the people who might want to hear it, is an avenue that I might want to pursue.

MU: Whether or not you get paid for it or not.

CA: Correct. My goal is accomplished every time we finish writing a song. That’s where it ends. When we get to take it on the stage, that’s a special thing too. But really my goal and my soul purpose in this is to be creative in the practice space with these incredible musicians that surround me and doing something unique.

MU: But getting the music from there out to the people is going to require the existence of at least some kind of music business. Getting the record budget, getting in the studio, getting it out to the people, somebody has to pay for that.

CA: Isn’t that the truth. (laughs)

MU: Can there be a music business with MP3’s traded freely without charge over the Internet?

CA: I think so. As a musician, I need to take advantage of avenues to get my music out to the people that want to hear it. I understand that the music industry is based on money, and this is all about making a dollar. And right now I don’t think that’s necessarily in danger. I don’t necessarily think that’s what Napster is being used for. Although I think in some cases it is. And in those cases, I don’t know if I’m 100% behind pulling an entire album off there at CD quality. You’re not being very supportive. I think the people that are behind the music and understand what the music stands for are gonna be the people that support that band, and support that record label that’s putting out that band.

“U.S. digital download sales reached an all-time high for the fourth year in a row, culminating with the biggest post-holiday sales week. For Christmas week (December 24-30), shoppers downloaded almost 43 million tracks from various digital music services, according to data from Nielsen SoundScan. That’s a 42.5 percent jump over the 30.1 million downloaded in the same week the previous year.

For the year, 844.1 million tracks were downloaded digitally, a 45 percent rise over the 581.9 million tally for 2006. “Digital Sales Hit Record High In ‘07

planned on discussing this poll in depth. 2/3 of the people that participated in the poll said “No, the internet is not killing the record industry”. I agree that it’s not killing the record industry…but they are pissed cause they are not making nearly as much money as they used to. I was cruising through some older posts on Metalsucks.net and I came across this post where “Vince Neilstein” (I love it!) talked about that woman in Minnesota that has to pay over 200 grand and then he goes way in depth about this whole subject. Below is a short excerpt of the post. Follow the link to read the whole thing. It’s kinda long but it explains everything way better than I ever could.

“The recorded music business is not going to die. Whether it shifts towards pay downloads (i.e. iTunes), a subscription service like cable, or some other model, I do believe that there will be some form of monetization for recorded music.

The problem lies in the way the current major label model works, and the incompatibility of that model with the way it looks like music will be sold in the future. The labels are holding on to this antiquated idea of the mainstream, where millions of potential listeners are marketed to via the carpet-bombing technique; market to everyone all at once, all the time, via as many methods as possible. The fact of the matter is that computers and the Internet make this model irrelevant because people no longer depend on mainstream outlets for their music (or at least they are depending on these outlets less and less). For starters, everyone with access to a computer has the ability to make very inexpensive recordings of surprising quality using cheap programs like Garageband, meaning the marketplace is flooded with many more different kinds of music than ever before. What this means on the user end is that music fans can now seek out their own favorite sun-sub-sub-genre. Trickle this down to the record labels, and you’ve got a problem; if the marketplace is so divided, each individual act/release is not going to do as well as before.”
