Judas Priest Doesn’t Need To Apologize To Anyone

Classic Rock Magazine recently interviewed Glen Tipton of Judas Priest. The subject of some of the questions were Rob’s voice, criticism of Nostradamus and the decision of touring with Megadeth And Testament on Priest Feast. You can read the entire interview HERE, but here is my take on these three questions:

Judas Priest has been around for 30+ years. Even though Nostradamus was not an album that I listen to all the time, it’s still a great piece of music. It’s not Screaming For Vengeance or British Steel but it’s something different. A concept that the band wanted to do and you can’t really take that away from them. At times it seems drawn out but it’s still well put together.

Rob Halford is getting old. We know it, he knows it. He’s hit notes with his voice that a lot of metal singers, new and old could only dream of. Granted these days he may not be able to hit those same notes but he sounds good. If you catch a live show and then complain about how well he sung during said show, then you need to remember how many shows they do and how long the sets are. You don’t have to be very intelligent to understand that touring and singing in Rob’s style puts a hell of a strain on your voice.

Lastly, I don’t understand why anyone would complain about Judas Priest, Megadeth and Testament. Three legendary bands on one bill. The only complaint I have is that this didn’t happen in the states. Complaining about that line-up is like complaining about having a fun job that pays great. Sadly, someone always finds something to complain about.

By The Way…did anyone know that Metallica is now considered “Classic Rock”? Apparently they are because they are on the cover of the Magazine.

Halford Wants A Full Blown Theatrical Performance Of Nostradamus

Rob Halford of some band that no one has ever heard of…wants to see a full blown theatrical production of Nostradamus. You know I think that would be something to see. Although I haven’t been to a theater show since high school when it was a mandatory thing, I have always liked a good stage performance. Yeah, I know that doesn’t sound very “Metal” but who gives a shit? Some theater performances are cool whether you want to admit it or not. This would be something cool to see. I didn’t give Nostradamus a great review because it wasn’t the metal album I thought it would be, but it is still a great album, music wise. Some of the songs seem like they are too long at moments but it’s still a great album. He said that the band just wants to take it to the road and play the songs, but in the long run he would like to see a “Completely over the f*cking top” production. We’ll see if it leads up to that.

Review: Judas Priest Nostradamus

I’ve been trying to think on this one really hard because it is a complex album to review. Some have called it a masterpiece some have called it bloated and boring. This is the best way I can explain Judas Priest’s Nostradamus: If you really want to enjoy this album you have to go into it NOT thinking it’s another Judas Priest album. If you go into it and expect it to be another ripping Judas Priest record, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment.

There are very few songs on this record that actually sound as if it is the British metal pioneers that we expect great metal albums from. And when I say very few…I mean maybe two. This entire “concept” album based on Nostradamus is musically amazing. It has the sounds of a rock opera as everyone else is saying and would probably make for a good movie sort of like Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Maybe a musical on Broadway. It’s just that slow and not Priest-ish. Power ballad after power ballad lead into a sooner or later, short lived metal riff. If you’re going to make a song over 5 minutes long at least make it interesting instead of the same lines over and over. The cheese factor on this album is just as huge as everyone else is saying. I starting laughing after about the 29th NOOOOOSSSTAAAADDAAAMUUUUUSSSS. If you like cheese then grab a bottle of Merlot and press play.

My final take on Judas Priest’s Nostradamus is this: It’s not the Judas Priest we know, it’s Judas Priest writing some kind of sound track to a beautiful story, with some really nice sounding slower songs. The die hard brain washed Priest fan is going to say it’s brilliant…which it is…just not in the Judas Priest sort of way.

If you dig slow power ballads then you may like it. If you expect a hard hitting, ripping vocal, chugging riff album then go buy British Steel if you haven’t already. This album is a watered down version of Priest but still musically, very nice. They aren’t Screaming For Vengeance, Breaking The Law or trying to Ram It Down. Hell, they aren’t even Heading Out To The Highway. They don’t want to be loved…they just want to be left alone…(yeah, I can be cheesy too)

As a metal album I have no choice but to only allow 2 stars

Judas Priest | Nostradamus YOU Review It!

So I picked up the new Judas Priest, Nostradamus, on the way home from work today. Right about now I’m not quite sure what to think of it. Everything I have heard this far is kind of mellow and it sounds as if Rob Halford has lost some range in his voice since Angel Of Retribution. I’ll do a full blown review of it in a couple of days. Give it some time to sink and and hear the entire record. So if you have heard the entire album, Nostradamus, let me know how you feel about it so far. YOU review it.

Priest Rolling Out To Tour In ‘08

“The Judas Priest Machine will be rolling out on the road again next year – the tour starts in June 2008 – dates to be announced shortly!!!!”

I’ll keep you updated when I hear more. Priest are currently working on their new “Concept” record “Nostradamus”. When these concept albums are talked about I never know what to think. An entire recording about one basic theme? I’m just not sure how thats going to fly.

On another note, I really liked Angel Of Retribution. Even with a songs about the Loch-ness monster perceived as an evil monster like creature terrorizing Scotland…kinda had me laughing~
