In This Moment’s Chris Howorth Checks in from the Road

In This Moment guitarist Chris Howorth has dropped the following update from the road:

“As I write this update we are 11 days away from the end of Warped Tour 2009 – I am in a hotel room in Boise, ID on one of our last days off for the tour. We went into Warped Tour thinking we knew what to expect (we’ve done two Ozzfest’s and numerous other festivals) but we quickly realized that Warped Tour is a completely different animal. For starters it’s bigger than any other traveling festival out there – we are talking 600 plus people traveling with the tour, over 60 buses, 30 vans, RVs, semi trucks, cars etc etc….all traveling together and setting up and tearing down every day – it’s a huge production!

Attendance has been insane, every show packed with all kinds of people from metal heads to punk rockers to emo kids and everything in between. It’s a huge mix of people from all walks of life. Most of them are kids under 18, it has been an amazing opportunity for us to reach a brand new audience that have never heard of us before (Thanks Kevin Lyman). We started the tour thinking its an alternative music fest and we have lots of new songs that aren’t just metal that would probably appeal to the Warped Tour audience and yet again we came to realize we had no idea what the Warped Tour audience was. These kids want to move, crowd surf and mosh just like any metal crowd so we adjusted the set list and pulled out heavy songs we haven’t played since touring with MEGADETH in 2007. With so many bands playing the festival and so much stuff going on every day you really have to hustle to get people to stop and watch your band, so throughout the tour we are constantly brainstorming to come up with new ideas for the show and ways to get people to take notice. One of the best things we came up with was to go out into the crowd on the last song and try and get a circle pit going around us, and even better than that….an all girl circle pit…turns out Warped Tour is the perfect place to get a huge all girl circle pit going…..and I gotta say its a pretty cool feeling to stand in the middle of a bunch of girls who are circle pitting around you. Another really cool thing we were reminded of at Warped Tour was how amazing the In This Moment fans are. At every city we played this summer we were greeted by our fans at every show singing along and standing in the front row making us feel welcome, thank you for buying our merch and supporting us. We have real fans that will come see us no matter what we are doing or who we are playing with.You guys are the best! That being said, we are currently planning something really special for our fans this fall! (announcement coming soon).

One last little tidbit of info…we are using the next two months following Warped Tour to start writing music for our next album, we will record the album at the beginning of the year for a summer 2010 release. As a band we’ve been discussing what we want for the sound of the new album and the general consensus is we are all feeling a heavier and darker vibe for this one (that makes me happy)……stay tuned!”

What Do You Think Of Metallica’s Cyanide?

Thanks to Blabbermouth.net, we have a soundboard quality recording of Metallica performing Cyanide at Ozzfest from their upcoming Death Magnetic. Right now all I can say is that it’s 1000 times better than anything from St. Anger, but what will the studio, pro-tooled version sound like? Not too shabby. Back to the 90’s-ish but not too shabby. A little over-use of the wah as usual though.

Black Tide’s Shockwave EP Review

If you have been following along, you have seen me post press releases for Black Tide, the young thrash metal band out of Florida that has been touring with Avenged Sevenfold (you know how I feel about A7X) and did some time on Ozzfest.

Yesterday I received the 2 song ep. While I feel this band has a lot of potential I do have just one complaint, but I’ll get to that in a second. If you’ve watched the video you can see that they are obviously very young and extremely talented and have that sound of an 80’s thrash band. Instrumentally and vocally they kick ass. What I don’t like from what I have heard are the lyrics. With the songs full of “I am’s” and “We are’s” it all seems kinda…immature. When I say immature, I don’t mean immature as in juvenile and childish. I mean it sounds like I suppose it should, young, if you know what I mean. These guys are young and their lyric development needs some work, perhaps some help from a good producer or a veteran (metal) song writer.

Other than the lyrics, they have a great metal sound and I think if managed well, Black Tide could go a long way.

Black Tide, Bringing Back Thrash

Remember back in the day when thrash was thriving and our ears were starving for new bands to take the scene by storm? Black Tide is a bit late coming to the scene but they were a bit young back then, hell a few of them were not even born yet.

Black Tide have just unveiled the video for their blistering single “Shockwave.” The live footage in the clip was taken during their main stage run on this past summer’s Ozzfest tour. The Miami band’s blend of aggressive yet contagious hard rock has been winning over fans nightly on their current nationwide trek. Check out Alex Nunez and Gabriel Garcia’s scorching fretwork on “Shockwave” and keep an eye out for their upcoming debut album, Light From Above, on Interscope Records!

Metal Shavings 8/29

Welcome to the last Metal Shavings for August. It’s been a busy and hectic month for me and I hope everyone had a great summer as we start to roll out the fall welcome mat. Lets get to the news:

Glenn Danzig will be heading out to do some U.S. shows this fall and has just wrapped up production on the debut recording of Misfits Guitarist Doyle’s band Gorgeous Frankenstein. Not sure what to make of these guys yet. Glenn does not have any planes of rejoining his former misfits counterparts and has just recently released The Lost Tracks Of Danzig.

Nikki Sixx is getting way more media than he deserves.

Ozzfest has received so much bad media this year and not just because it was free. From deaths, to underage drinking to officers getting hurt. I don’t know what to make of it or why this year its getting so much bad media. Not only does it make the concert look bad but also the Heavy Metal scene.

Dino Cazares new band Divine Heresy released its debut album Bleed The Fifth this week. I’m eager to hear it. If anyone has hear or bought this record let us know what you think!

Highschool Tributes will release a Metallica tribute. I’m not up on my knowledge of this Project but as far as I can tell its a collaboration of Canadian high school kids doing tribute tunes. They have already done two kiss tributes and will be releasing the Metallica Tribute “Teach ‘Em All” in April ‘08.

Speaking of Metallica, Blabbermouth has posted these video and new from Metallica at this location.

Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan…oh wait…I almost forgot this blog was for Metal Bands, not whiny jerk-offs like this guy!

Prong will be releasing their first studio album in 4 years on October 2, 2007 entitled “Power Of The Damager“. Better be good cause the title kinda corny!

The Hellacopters began mixing their new album and then realized how stupid their name was.

Metal Shavings 8/18

I have a busy weekend with my daughters 1st birthday so I’m going to try to squeeze in some news and not much more.

Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) has announced that they have been working on the line-up for Gigantour and are about halfway done.

A lot of crazy shit has been happening at and around Ozzfest this year, a few deaths at, leaving and going to Ozzfest, But the latest news is that about 83 moshers were arrested by police at a New Jersey Ozzfest. Police apprehended the moshers if they were flailing their arms in a away that looked to be dangerous to others. Would someone please tell the police that mosh-pits are not for catching butterflies and bunny rabbits but rather bloody noses and black eyes. People enter them at their own risk, don’t you guys have some child sex predators to catch or something?

The bible-throwing bumble bees of Stryper are making a new record is anyone cares.

The art work for the upcoming Megadeth Warchest was featured on Reuters giant Times Square display in NYC several times yesterday. Check out a photo of it here.

Metallica Bass player Robert Trujillo say that no previously performed songs will be on the upcoming record.

Phil Anselmo will be placing installments on Down’s myspace site about the band for the fans. You can check out the first installment here

Hatebreed’s new video for the Supremacy song Destroy Everything has become and instant fan favorite on their myspace site. This is one of my favorites too. Supremacy is one of best CD’s to listen to when I work out. Check it out here.

As if Kiss didn’t have enough merchandise out there on the market, a Kiss Rubicks Cube will be coming out. Looks pretty cool.

The Warped Tour Organizer Speaks Out Against “Free” Ozzfest

As we all know this years Ozzfest is “Free”. I put free in quotes because tickets are not that easy to get and the line-up really isn’t that good. So even though its free is it still worth it to sit or stand out in the blazing sun to watch a less than mediocre show? The Van’s Warped tour organizer doesn’t think so, and he brings up some very valid points. I said it in an earlier “Metal Shavings” post that I’d much rather pay and see a good line-up than go for free and see maybe one or two bands worth seeing. The only thing that may be good about this tour is that the smaller name bands that haven’t quite got their name out there are getting a chance and I hope it works out well for them, but in the meantime you can read the full article at Metal Hammer

Metal Shavings 7/30

What a weekend! I’m glad to be back. I’ll save you guys my sob story of how grueling the drive was and get right to the news.

Down promises the new record in September and Bassist Rex Brown says its going to be “the most f***’n amazing and classic Down record ever made.” This is actually old news but I guess they want to reassure everyone that they are still out there.

L.A. metal act Resistance have posted a new song online entitled “Inhumanation” on their myspace site. You can get it here Resistance Myspace. You can also see the entire track list from their new album there.

Dark secrets about Sharon Osbourne’s father Don Arden have been revealed…who really cares? I’m tired of here and hearing anything about here. The red hair and voice make me want to vomit! If you really want to know more then go to blabbermouth.net and read the full story.

Hell Yeah’s tour bus broke down in D.C. Sunday night forcing them to miss their gig at the family values show in Hartford Connecticut.

Ozzy Osbourne had to undergo surgery in Denver Saturday night when he reported pain in his leg which turned out to be a blood clot. He was in Denver for Ozzfest ‘07. no word yet on how this will effect his appearance in future shows.

Velevet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum give an update on Metallica new record at Metal Hammer…still has me wondering.

-Slayer will be re-issuing their entire catalog and a special edition of Christ Illusion with bonus tracks is to be released on July 24.

-Slipknot’s Joey Jordison has revealed that the follow up the 2004’s Subliminal Verses will be released in ‘08 and will be the heaviest Slipknot record in their 12 year career.

-20 people were arrest at a July 18th Tool show in jersey on charges of underage drinking and possession charges…Dumb asses.

-James Hetfield in an interview with Russian E-zine “Darkside” tells why they chose H.I.M. as support for their Moscow show and then joked that he wanted Megadeth as support. These days I think Metallica should be supporting Megadeth.

-Marylin Manson blah blah blah…who Cares!!!

-Monster energy drink still sucks and so does the line up for the free Ozzfest this year, I’d rather pay the money and see a Kick ass line up like Ozzfest ‘04.

-Ex-Black Sabbath Manager and father of Sharon Osborne, Don Arden dead at 81
