Contest: Win Bigelf ‘Cheat the Gallows’ CD and T-Shirt
July 30, 2009 by Eric J
I was given the opportunity last week to listen to Bigelf’s new CD Cheat the Gallows, and I absolutely love this band. While most of their songs wouldn’t be considered “metal”, one of their jams, titled “The Evils of Rock and Roll” is featured on Revolver Magazine’s free 21 song Metal Mayhem Compilation, which is the first song I heard by the group.
As part of the Progressive Nation Tour, Bigelf is currently touring with Dream Theater, Zappa Plays Zappa and Scale the Summit. Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy says:
Los Angeles’ Bigelf are my personal favorite new band to come along in …read more
Heads Will Roll With Scale The Summit, Protest The Hero and The Number 12 Looks Like You
February 27, 2009 by Scott
The Number 12 Looks Like You? I hope their tunes are better than their name. Someone enlighten me, please. Scale The Summit are heading out with Protest The Hero to support their latest release Carving Desert Canyons. If you haven’t checked that out yet, do so. Also check out their last album Monument, which is a killer instrumental album by the band. I’m not sure who’s opening for who. It also looks like Misery Signals will be a part of this tour too.
2/27 – Houston, TX – Warehouse Live (Cd Release Party)
4/17 – Denver, CO – The Marquis Theater

In the past year or so musicians have stepped it up, saying; “If you don’t like 7 strings…here’s one more.”. Let’s look at a few things in the current metal scene with more than 6 strings.

Instrumental Reviews: Scale The Summit, American Draft and Pegataur
It’s not often that I come across a an instrumental album that really holds me to it and keeps me interested after one listen. Marty Friedman and maybe Joe Satriani are exceptions but guitar virtuoso’s like Steve Vai just don’t do it for me. Don’t get me wrong, Steve Vai is a great guitar player but every album it feels more like he’s showing off and it grows very stale, very fast. I love what he does…but only once or twice. The three bands I’m about to review are different from each other and have their own quality that …read more
