Soulfly’s “Jumpdafuckup” Vocals Covered in a Very… Interesting Way

There isn’t a lot that I can say to explain this video. You just have to watch/hear it to understand my confusion. Is this a work of parody? A work of genius? An homage to Soulfly? A “fuck you” to Corey Taylor? Funny or sad? The way this dude actually gets pissed at himself when he “messes up” almost had me on the floor.

I’m leaning towards honest attempt that results in a horrifying train wreck, but watch and decide for yourselves.

Reviewing Reviews Of 2008

Looking back at some of my reviews of 2008 I can’t help but express how much I hate doing reviews sometimes. Sometimes you get excited for a newly released cd and love it for the first couple listens. Some are great cds with good sound but then later on you read what others stated in their reviews and second guess your own opinion. Some are great at the first listen but don’t hold a lasting effect that a good cd needs in order to make it a truly good release. Some take some time to sink in before you actually really start to enjoy them and some are immediate favorites. Some leave you wanting more in the manner that the entire CD is great and you want to hear more from the band and some leave you wanting more in the manner that there were only a few good songs and the rest fall really short and feel like fillers. Below are some reviews that I look back at and don’t quite feel the same as I did when I reviewed them and some I still hold firm.

All That Remains – Overcome: This was one of my “Highly Anticipated” releases for 2008. After really enjoying The Fall Of Ideals and This Darkened Heart, I couldn’t wait to see what was next. When the first two singles dropped I really liked them. The sound was a bit different and I couldn’t wait for the album. When I got it I was pretty stoked. I wrote a great review for it and said it surpassed their previous releases. While the album is different from the previous two and is good in it’s own right, it lacks longevity. I wouldn’t call it “uninspired” as many others have, but it It doesn’t having the lasting effect that The Fall Of Ideals has.

The Acacia Strain – Continent: This is another one of those albums that doesn’t have the lasting effect. It’s heavy and brutal, but it lacks the hooks that I feel is necessary to make an album stand the test of time. The vocals and lyrics are great, but a good chorus or breakdown is needed for me to truly appreciate this album. Like The Dead Walk, I really dug it at first listen but it’s easily forgotten within a week or so.

Austrian Death Machine – Total Brutal: Tim Lambesis side project with Ahhnold was fun at first few listens. The music is cool and there are a lot of guest solos in the mix. Paul Raven (From The Critics Den) kind of opened my eyes up a bit more on this album. In his review he states that it is one of those albums that get’s passed around by teenage metalheads and that the novelty of it doesn’t last very long. He was exactly right. It’s a “Solid thrash album”, as he says in the comments of my review but it doesn’t last long and gets thrown in with the stack of things such as Beatallica, the Jerkie Boys and such. Funny, yes. Overwhelmingly wowing…’fraid not.

Soulfly – Conquer: I stated in my review that this is probably Soulfly’s best release ever…and I still feel that way. If you ever plan on getting a Soulfly album then start with this. If you want to reach in to their back catalog, then go for their self titled debut. Everything in between is garbage in my opinion. Conquer brings a thrashier feel to it as if Max and Igor Cavalera Conspiracy release resurrected something inside of him. Let’s not forget that Marc Rizzo is a complete bad-ass guitar player too.

Withered – Folie Circulaire: This one was really tough to get in to. The blackened death metal genre is something I’m fairly new to and if your not totally in to that music then it will either take some time to get used to or it will just not sink in at all. The Funeral Pyre is the same way. Their 2008 release Wounds has that strange effect where it takes some time. Prosthetic Records signs acts that stand out from the rest. That’s where bands like Lamb Of God and All That Remains got their big start. Other bands that made their Prosthetic label debut this year that deserve a listen are Book Of Black Earth with Horoskopus and The Antagonist with Exist.

Children Of Bodom – Blooddrunk: This album seemed to fall short of my expectation upon first listen. I honestly don’t know what I expected of this album considering that I only heard Hate Crew Deathroll and Are You Dead Yet? before I got BloodDrunk. I bought it and the same day immediately after first listen wrote a review saying that it was mediocre. A day or two later I wrote a quick re-review, something I don’t often do. The album grew on me and I was really getting in to it. While it’s still not my favorite COB release it’s a good release nonetheless. After I bought Blooddrunk I went on the search and bought the remaining C.O.B. re-releases of the albums I didn’t have.

Finally Slipknot and Metallica: I loved the old Metallica like a million others have. I’ve also been disappointed like a million others have since the release of Load, Reload and St. Anger. What I expected of Death Magnetic was another over-hyped piece of dog excrement. What we got was a not-so-bad album with a more thrash feel than the previous four Metallica studio album with it’s ups and downs. This album proved that Metallica haven’t totally lost touch with their past, but are still far from re-achieving the expectations of a lot of their hardcore following fans from the beginning. At some points is seems as they are trying too hard and some times it seems they aren’t trying hard enough. Better than expected but still no enough to quench the hunger of a dying Metallica fan. Progress has been made but they might never make another Master Of Puppets and that’s something we all need to live with. To name this as “Album Of The Year” is just plain idiotic.

Slipknot really disappointed me this year. All Hope Is Gone was hyped and hyped some more. The best songs were released as singles and most everything else on the album felt like a rushed filler. We’ve seen a different progression of the band since MFKR, but this one was a giant step sideways instead of forward. Iowa had me wanting more and Vol. 3 made me a happy fan. The Stone Sour releases in between sufficed but All Hope Is Gone made me second guess myself as a fan of this band. I don’t really know if I will anticipate the next one as much as I have in the past. Also I have found so many more bands and releases this year that it was almost easy to forget how much I disliked this record and that makes me feel as if perhaps I’m growing away from Slipknot, which ultimately is not necessarily a bad thing. All Hope Is not Gone, but on more release like this and it may be.

Writing reviews is not as an easy process as some might think. After you have written so quite a few it’s tough to come up with creative ways to say just how “Brutal” or shitty an album really is. For some it comes easy and for others like myself it’s not always a piece of cake. You also have to battle your own feelings sometimes and try not to second guess yourself in fear of drawing a negative response from someone that doesn’t feel the same way about an album. At times you read a comment from someone after you’ve posted a review and it’s get’s you thinking about that album. You go back and you think to yourself, “Damn, they’re right.”. You don’t want to change your mind but sometimes you have to bite the bullet and either say so or just ignore the fact. Some albums deserve a full track-by-track review and other just need a simple explanation that the album slays. With the Internet it’s fairly easy to find reviews before you buy a cd. Who’s advice you take is solely up to you and your liking. If ever you agree read a review in Rolling Stone Magazine and it says nothing but negative things about the album…chances is are that the album is great. If they say and album is innovative and spectacular…buyer beware.

2008 has been a great year for metal. Here is my Top 10 Favorite Metal Albums of 2008 (that I own). I know that there are probably a lot of other amazing metal albums that came out this year but I can only go off of what I own and what I’ve heard. So more or less these are my favorites and not some definitive collection of what I think is the best. How many people can honestly say that they have heard and thoroughly listened to every new metal album that came out this year? Anyway, let’s get to it.

Summer Metal Picks Playlist

With summer in the U.S. drawing to an end The b5Media music channels are putting together their summer play lists. A lot of great music has come out this spring and summer and there is much more to come this year in terms of metal. I’ve got into so many bands this year, it’s hard to pick just a few so I’ll pick an album and my favorite song off of it. I was trying to put together one of those cool play list widgets so you could actually listen to my picks, but some of the songs were not available, so I said screw it. If you’re familiar with the bands and songs below then you know what I mean. If you’re not, give them a listen somehow, somewhere.

First up is Firewind’s The Premonition. I wasn’t sure what to make of this band when I first saw the Mercenary Man video on Headbanger’s ball. I’m not usually one for Power Metal, but when I saw these guys at on the Tyranny And Bloodshred tour this summer they blew me away. Gus is an amazing shredder and Apollo is an amazing singer. I like the Allegiance album a bit more than The Premonition but if I had to pick one song from this album it would be Head Up High.

Kataklysm’s Prevail is just a brutal album from beginning to end. Before this I had only heard Manipulator Of Souls on the Nuclear Blast 20th Anniversary set. I thought it was pretty good but wasn’t sure if it was a band that I could get in to. When I bought Prevail it became an instant favorite. The first single Taking The World By Storm is a great metal anthem style tune, with a great rhythm, but I have to pick the title song Prevail as my favorite.

This Is Exile from Whitechapel is a dark and ridiculously heavy album that I’m really into this summer. While it’s not anything really different from most of the extreme metal genre stuff out there right now, it’s still a great album and I can’t wait to see these guys play next month.To All That Are Dead is my pick off of this album.

Amon Amarth is a band that I just got into this weekend. Although this has came out two years ago, With Oden On Our Side is amazing from beginning to end. Heavy riffs, cool vocals and a story being told in between. If you were to close your eyes and listen along you can almost imagine the songs in a visual way…and everyone likes a good Viking story. Ruins To My Memory is my favorite from With Oden On Our Side.

The Black Dahlia Murder is yet another band that I’ve only come to like here recently. For a long time I couldn’t get into the vocals of Trevor Strnad, but same was the case for a lot of bands that I have come to like in the last year. A quick pick from Nocturnal would have to be Of Darkness Spawned.

Seeing Carcass have graced us with a full blown reunion tour, I figured this was a good throw in. Call them grindcore, deathcore, whatever. Carcass is bad ass all the way around. Heartwork, the album and song have always been and probably always will be my favorite. A lot of Carcass fans will say the same thing. Heartwork is an amazing song with great breakdowns, solos etc. Just the way it starts with that tornado sounding introduction that just build up into that pinch harmonic and then a flurry of guitar. Embodiment is another cool song from the Heartwork album. Seeing them live for the first time next month is going to be exhilarating.

Love them or hate them, Slipknot put on a great show and with a new record coming in a little over a week we can expect a lot of buzz about favorites from All Hope Is Gone. From the two that I’ve heard (No I didn’t make the listening party at Hot Topic), being All Hope Is Gone and Psychosocial, I like Psychosocial. I like the chorus and if it’s any sign that more of the album is going to have that side of Corey Taylor to it, then I will probably love it and a bunch of Slipknot fans are going to hate it and say that it sounds too much like Stone Sour. I don’t care either way because I like both bands.

Soulfly’s Conquer still amazes me. I mean, I can’t believe that it’s a Soulfly album. Max is shooting 2 for 2 this year, with Conquer and The Cavalera Conspiracy. My pick from Conquer is Touching The Void. It’s not the fastest song on the album, but it’s one of my favorites on this album. While I’m mentioning The Cavalera Conspiracy, I might as well pick one from that as well. Black Ark is just one of many cool songs from Inflikted as is the first single Sanctuary.

Lastly, to keep the number a nice round 10, I have picked Children Of Bodom’s One Day You Will Cry from Blooddrunk. The first couple of times I listened to this album I really didn’t think it was all that great. While it’s not my favorite COB album, it’s still good. With all the songs on this album, picking one that stands out to me was tough. See, with Blooddrunk all the songs are good, but besides the cover of Ghostriders In The Sky, they all just sound like typical Children Of Bodom songs. So I had to pick one that I liked the most and it was One Day You Will Cry.

There are so many others that deserve a mention but I would be here all day. So what would your list look like?

Soulfly: Conquer. Possibly The Best Soulfly Album…EVER!

I’ve been hesitant about buy the new Soulfy CD, Conquer, even after hearing Unleash and really liking it. I was worried that it would be another over nu-metal, tribal crazy/crappy album like most of them are. I remember really liking the first Soulfly, but these days I can’t bear listening to it. After buying Soulfly 3 I was a bit disappointed too. The Cavalera Conspiracy gave me hope. It gave me hope that Max still had it in him. The ability to right kick ass thrashy songs.

Conquer sounds more like a continuation of The Cavalera Conspiracy and less of a Soulfly album, but that’s a great thing. Max keeps the lyrics simple and lets us never forget how much he loves the word “fuck”, as he did with the Cavalera Conspiracy. The riffs are crunchy yet interesting and the solos are as always great from the fingers of Marc Rizzo. Max pretty much expresses his dislike for war…in every song. The theme is pretty much the same all the way through but it still sounds good. Touching the void is a cool slow groove and chop song with more instrumental than vocals and the last track, Soufly VI is a great soft instrumental arrangement. What is even better about this album is that it has very minimum of the tribal effects and such that every other Soufly album has. If you have any doubts, head on over to Soulfly’s Myspace and stream some of the new stuff. Max got his groove back, bitches!

Some people don’t feel like staying up that late on a Saturday night or sitting through all the commercials or the videos. So I’ve compiled all the videos here. What I hate about Headbanger’s Ball these days is that there is no commentary and rarely interviews and such like there used to be. Somehow when I was typing up the Headbanger’s Ball play-list I missed Soulfly’s Unleash. I mentioned it in the intro but just forgot to put it in there I guess.
