Chris Johnson, vocalist for The Flood, was kind enough to take some time and answer a few questions for Metal Martyr. The Flood recently wrapped up their 2009 SnoCore tour dates with Static-X and is currently working on their debut album with multi-Platinum, Grammy award winning producer Sylvia Massy (Tool, System of a Down, Johnny Cash, Smashing Pumpkins).

Eric: Hey Chris, thanks for taking the time to answer some questions. First, could you tell us about The Flood? What’s the meaning behind the band’s name?

Chris: We’re a four piece band. Ajay Marshall on guitar, Jeff Eason on bass, Nate Minick on drums and me, Chris Johnson on vocals. We are four like-minded musicians, playing with the intent to bring timeless music to those who appreciate emotional music. There’s a reason bands like Floyd and Zeppelin stood the test of time; they were masters of creating feeling. There’s never a reason to write a bad song when human emotion is an unlimited resource. We strive for this level of mastery with every song we write and we hold ourselves accountable to do just that. As far as our name goes; I wanted to find a name that best represented how I felt about the music.

Eric: What are some of the strengths that each member of the band brings to the table?

Chris: Ajay is our newest member and has been a very important addition to the band. Not only does he come with a fantastic attitude, he has only complimented our music. Our bassist, Jeff, is a true professional. He’s got a flashy style and is a real showman. To date he is the best bass player I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. Nate is our drummer and has been a part of The Flood since the beginning. His unique style and patience allows him to be a cohesive machine. When I am creating music, I like to immerse myself into a topic that I feel strongly about revealing all the truths and possibilities no matter how ugly or how shocking it may seem.

Eric: How did you all meet?

Chris: Nate is the brother of my original guitar player Jessie Minick. I’ve known him for about ten years and have been playing with him for around six years. Jeff on the other hand was a replacement for our original bassist and he came to us through a friend about two years ago. As I said, Ajay is our newest member. After listening to hundreds of demos and over thirty auditions we finally found Ajay. He was the perfect fit and real bad ass.

Eric: So who are some of your major influences?

Chris: Jeff Buckley, Pink Floyd, Tool, System of a down, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Fugazi, Slayer, Pattsy Clyne, Johnny Cash, just to name a few.

Eric: You just wrapped up your tour dates at SnoCore. How was touring with Static-X?

Chris: Their fans totally kicked ass. The crew was awesome and Static’s members made us feel welcome. Night after night, their consistency was amazing and gave us something to strive for during our first major tour.

Eric: Could you tell us one story that really sticks out in your mind from the tour?

Chris: Right before the first show on SnoCore, our bus broke down. I was able to diagnose the problem and find a place nearby to fix it. Once we found out our coach would be fixed in time for us to make our first show, our manager, Darrick Jones, got so excited that he accidentally punched me in the face, loosening my two front teeth. I drank through a straw for the first two weeks of the tour. Of course all was soon forgiven with the excitement of the tour.

Eric: I’ve never been so excited that I punched a friend in a face, I think I’m gonna try that sometime. Do you have any more shows or tours lined up for the near future?

Chris: Yes. Something big soon. I look forward to making the announcement.

Eric: I look forward to writing about the big announcement! You have been compared to bands such as Korn, Tool and the Deftones. How do you feel about these comparisons?

Chris: To be compared to those bands is a real compliment, but I believe we have a unique style, one that sets us apart.

Eric: What is it like to be recording your debut with Sylvia Massy? Can you briefly describe the music-making process in the studio?

Chris: Working with Sylvia is amazing. I know when we work with her we are in good hands and her studio/theatre is incredible both acoustically and visually! I was really impressed with the history of some of the equipment. Led Zeppelin’s song Remains the Same was mixed on the Neve console and the SVT bass amp that Jeff used, belonged to the Rolling Stones during one of their first tours. As far as the process goes, we do the pre-production at our studio in Redmond, WA. This means we get the platform ironed out before heading to Radiostar Studios. Once in the studio, we play the songs for Sylvia. She gives us a yea or ney and then we begin tracking. When the instruments and vocals are tracked in studio A, we move to studio B and mix everything down. When everyone’s happy with the end product, we come back home and master our tracks at RFI CD masters.

Eric: What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Chris: Finding chemistry in the people you play with and finding the right management and other people to help along the way. We have over time assembled an awesome team and that helps us to overcome all obstacles.

Eric: What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands, or be noticed by a label?

Chris: Don’t allow anything to get in the way of what you dream to be. Life is one great lesson. When you learn, you grow and with that you become a better you.

Eric: Well said. Is there anyone you’d like to thank for offering support on the way up?

Chris: My mom for living her dream and my father for showing me how to be my best.

Eric: Any final words?

Chris: I kind of feel like my journey is just beginning and I am just excited about the path The Flood is on.

Eric: I also think that you’ve only just begun. The Flood is set to explode on the scene, and I for one am looking forward to hearing much more from the band. Thanks again, Chris, for your time and great answers.

Razor Of Occam: Homage To Martyrs (Metal Blade Records)
Sounds Like: Black Metal, only better and with a little taste of death and some really ripping solos. If you like traditional black metal but you’re looking for something with a little more substance, Homage To Martyrs is the way to go.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. I’m not Irish but is there a better reason to drink beer and eat corned beef on a Tuesday? There is quite a few new metal albums out today. I’ve had a chance to listen to a few, so I’ll throw a few words in for each.

Metal Martyr Rating: 4/5

Into The Moat: The Campaign (Metal Blade Records)

Sounds Like: White Chapel and The Acacia Strain with some cool progressive acoustic parts and a few jazzy, mathcore overtones. It’s good but it sounds so similar to the two bands mentioned. They’ve been around longer than white chapel but are a few years behind The Acacia Strain.

Metal Martyr Rating: 3/5

Kylesa: Static Tensions (Prosthetic Records)

Sounds like: Your neighbors pounding on the walls, telling you to turn it down. A heard of elephants, stampeding with a sense of grace and melody. Loud and abrasive but extremely enjoyable, like every Kylesa album.

Metal Martyhr Rating 4/5

Paria: The Barnacle Cordious

Believer: Gabriel (Metal Blade)

Static-X: Cult of Static

That’s my motto. It’s been kind of slow around here lately and the only excuse I have is that I’ve been slacking. Not due to laziness but this week has been strange. For reasons unknown I have had a hell of a time getting quality sleep and it finally caught up with me yesterday and today. I don’t know if it’s due to my body being shocked after I quit smoking on new years and also cut drinking down to almost nothing as well, or what? Anytime I get off to a late start with my (pro)blogging it throws everything off. With that said, here is some stuff I missed today. Keep an eye out this weekend, I’ll be doing some posting here and there.

Stream Napalm Deaths new album “Time Waits For No Slave” in it’s entirety at Napalm Death’s Myspace.

Cattle Decapitation is giving you a chance to hear their new album The Harvest Floor as well over at Buzzgrinder. I haven’t had a chance to give it a listen but I’m sure it’s almost as tasty as a bloody filet mignon.

A whole bunch of shit is going on at NAMM. Check Blabbermouth every two minutes for up to date coverage of that.

If you liked Dee Snider’s 1998 film Strangeland then you may or may not be pleased to find out that there will be a sequel. You can read about it at BW&BK.

MetalUnderground.com has the track list to Static X new upcoming album Cult Of Static.

Twice in one week is odd for the report but there are a few things I think are news-worthy but don’t feel like writing extensively about them. Also, I was suppose to go see Mudvayne and Snot tonight and get an interview with Greg Tribbett. Unfortunately some things have come up and I can’t make it. It’s about a three hour drive for me and I would have to leave early and I have something that really needs to get done today. Anyway, here are a few things of interest…

Statix X have announce the title and release date for their next album. “Cult of Static” will be the title and March 17th will be the date of release.

Tony Iommi is suing Live Nation for selling merch that they no longer have a valid licence to sell. A license that expired back in 2006 allowed Signatures Network Inc. to sell Black Sabbath merchandise. In ‘07 Signatures was bought by Live Nation and they continued to sell the merchandise. I hope he wins because I hate Live Nation.

Juan Montoya formerly of Torche talks about altercations leading up to his dismissal from the band. While Torche leans more to a hard rock sound, they have a nostalgic sound that grows on you for some reason. Check out their latest release Meanderthal and the In Return Ep sometime.

Guns N Roses Chinese Democracy sales are being called a “Total Flop”, but guess what…Axl Rose isn’t losing a dime over it and neither is Interscope records. Best Buy agreed not to return any of the 1.3 million unsold records that they exclusively bought. Expect to see these remaining cd’s either discounted or sold to other stores maybe. I’ll wait until it’s like buy-one-get-one. I’m still curious to hear this.

Oakland based metal trio, High On Fire have been signed to Koch Records.

Or as the Roadrunner intern called them “Kock Records”, but that’s a whole other story.

Some of them were all metal and some, mostly metal. What I hate the most is when I get a soundtrack that has songs from a favorite band that is on their latest album and chances are that I already have it. This is kind of the case with the Punisher Warzone.

The first track on it is an original from Rob Zombie. Titled after the movie, Warzone is the electric, techno-metal that you can expect from Rob and it doesn’t sound like anything different from Zombies lat albums. As I stated a little while back, it starts out kind of cool but I’m quickly turned off by it as soon as the vocals and rhythm kick in. Sounds like it was done in a day or two.

The second and third tracks we are all familiar with. Slayer’s Final Six from Christ Illusion and Psychosocial from Slipknot’s latest release, All Hope Is Gone. Two cool tracks, but I’ve already heard them. Do they fit in this movie? Most likely.

Now remember where I said that you have soundtracks that are mostly metal? This is where it goes non-metal and more into the pop/rock genre. The fourth track is Historia Calamitatum from Rise Against. Not a bad track but not something I’m used to listening to and not something I’m really into.

Track five is Seether’s Fallen from their latest Finding Beauty In Negative Spaces. Seether is a good rock band. Not a bad track, but I’ve heard this once again and I would rather hear new tracks on a movie soundtrack.

Kerli’s Bulletproof is the sixth track and sounds like a slower goth-rock, Lacuna Coil-ish sounding tune. Not too bad if you dig that sound.

7 Days Away follows Kirli with Take Me Away. A solid rock song with a a few good hooks and a decent sound to it, but doesn’t sound much different from a lot of the rock bands floating around the modern rock genre these days.

Senses Fail hold the 8th spot with The Past Is Proof. If you know who Senses Fail are then you know how this track sticks out like a turd in a punch bowl among the others. We go from a Hard Rock/ Metal soundtrack and the this pop/rock/emo sounding crap that makes you wish you were deaf or at least had an ice pick near by to pierce your ear drums.

The ninth track called Butterfly Wings is by Machines Of loving Grace. Another techno/pop/metal song with Rob Zombie/ Nine Inch Nails influence.

Track 10 is 3 minutes and 56 seconds that you’re going to wish you had back. Genesis by Justice is a strange track with ambient sounds, sample and all sorts of crap that just sound like it was made with a cheap Casio Keyboard and Acid-pro.

Pendulum’s Showdown make up the next track and it’s another electrified pop/punk sound. I though this stuff died out in 1997. Guess it’s still cool to put in to movie soundtracks.

Ok, it’s about to get better. Hatebreed’s cover of Sepultura’s classic Refuse/ Resist is a really good cover. It’s almost spot on, but I have to wonder who did the solos because as far as I have really never heard a solo like that in a Hatebreed song and I often wondered the capability of Sean Martin and Frank Novinec’s guitar skills. Being a huge fan of Classic Sepultura, this track couldn’t have been in the right place to bring me back out of the slump I was in while listening to the songs before it.

Second to last on the soundtrack is Static X’s Lunatic. If you know me then you know that I’m not a fan of this band, however compared to most of the other songs on this soundtrack it’s better than most. Sounds similar to every other Static X song though.

The last track is by Ramallah with a track called Days Of Revenge. Kind of a nu-metal sound to it with keyboards and a rap-ish vocal verse. Not too bad but sounds more like Linkin Park if they were to go a little heavier.

I would say that I’m kind of disappointed with this soundtrack just for the fact that there is too much of the techno-electro crap and not enough good metal on it. No one ever said it was going to be a metal-driven sound track but that’s kind of what I expected. 4 out of 14 of the songs are good solid metal songs, but two of those tracks I’ve heard and only one of the other two I really like. Not a great soundtrack in my opinion. I think the last movie soundtracks that I really liked were Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight and Dee Snider’s Strangeland. That was a long time ago and I don’t think that I have really bought many since then. The last one that comes to mind is Underworld Evolution and that one sucked with the exception of maybe 2 or 3 songs.

As far as the movie goes, I’m really looking forward to seeing this. I wasn’t sure how this new guy Ray Stevenson would go over to replace Thomas Jane (And I would love to know why the actor change) but Ray Stevenson has a more hardened look to him. Thomas Jane did a good job in the first one, but Frank Castle always looked a little tougher than Jane. We’ll see.
